Mahogany/reddish hair dyes - opinions

I used to always dye my naturally dark brown hair a reddish mahogany/sometimes plummy colour throughout my twenties.

I've been sticking to plain brown in recent years just to cover greys, but have a hankering after a more reddish tone again.

Is mahogany hair a bit noughties/tacky for an early thirties mum?? Or have I just lost confidence?

nah...go for it! I'm a lot older than you and my hair is RED! if you have a lot of grey then you'll need to use a permanent hair colour with good grey coverage, such as L'Oreal Excellence.

Check the box before you buy: it will say if it is suitable for covering lots of grey. Plummy tones are a little dated but who cares if you like them???

If you are worried about a massive 'in your face' colour change - go for one shade lighter than your current basic natural colour and then you will get a more subtle colour effect. If you like it, you can go darker next time, with the next shade down in the same colour family, ie. medium plum red this time, mahogany next time.

I do have to say though - if you are in the least bit worried about doing a home colour, go see your hairdresser - you can always top up at home Smile

Fellow fake redhead here, and I love it! I do kind of feel with fake reds that it's better to be fairly bold with it - I think half hearted hints of red look a bit dated, but properly "yeah, so I have dyed hair...and" colours can look fab

I had these same thoughts in my early thirties, but now that I'm in my late thirties I think it's fine Grin We only live once,.. if you fancy it - why not?? I like red hair on other people too, all ages. The only condition is - you have to wear it with confidence.

I am very late forties and after henna in my twenties and mainly brown out of bottles since then was trying to go grey until I suddenly decided to go beck to henna. It is not bad and I have lots of grey. Went for the henne color in mahagony and then the next day their brown on top. Hair feels much better than it has in years. Would not go for chemical hair dye ever again.

I used to dye a mid brown until I got it cut short then I went for a coppery brown .

Red does fade quickest though. I have mine cut regularly so not too much overlap.

Will the red colour work on the brown dye though?

Castings Mahogany makes me look bright eyed and bushy tailed and has the right amount of red in it. Red tones are flattering in ny opinion?

I'm a natural brunette but got bored in May so went bright red, post box type red and I love it and my friends and family love it too, so if you want a change just be bold and go for it!
