I think the weather should be quite warm? I'm too excited to think for myself what I can wear! Any ideas gratefully received :)

Are you going to a special event or just a holiday ?

JuanPotatoTwo · 30/01/2015 19:00

One of the days is for the tennis but we'll have the best part of 3 days to explore (going Thurs morning to Sunday evening ). I'm clueless as to what to wear though. I have it in my head that everyone will be super rich and super stylish and I will be escorted out of the Principality for not coming up to scratch!

I was there in April on a cruise a few years ago. I noticed there types:

  1. Tourists - They wore pretty much what you'd expect!
  2. Label types - I saw lots of women very prominently decked out in just about every garish designer label you can fathom, including pushing children in push chairs with Fendi blankets.
  3. Low-key chic - This is what I'd go for. Slim trousers, slim tops, maybe with a light cardigan, nice leather shoes and handbag. I think you can fake this kind of style with less expensive basics if you spend a bit of money on things like hair and nails to look really polished.

We only had one night there and I went out in skinny jeans, a white top and black blazer with black heels. I accented with a couple of nice pieces of jewellery. I didn't feel like I stood out too much. We had a great time, but beware the £20 G&Ts!

That's really helpful Amax, thank you. I do like my gin - glad you warned me!

Sackcloth & ashes - especially if you are going to see El Pot! Grin

magimedi · 30/01/2015 19:56

I do like my gin

And I do remember you saying you were never going to touch gin again - HA!!

JuanPotatoTwo · 31/01/2015 12:27

Well I haven't said I have touched it again yet fully intend to though. What are you doing in S & B anyway, can't a girl ask a question in peace these days? !

How about finding a colour palette like denim, white and red then have tan leather accessories? Then whatever you take will go together. In my experience the tourists stick out a mile and the locals look quietly understated.

JuanPotatoTwo · 31/01/2015 12:46

Thanks googie, good plan. Just in case though - what do I do to avoid sticking out a mile? What are the "must-not-do's"?

No trainers, no fleece (not just in Monaco, in life), bag that suits your clothes, big sunglasses, small earrings, slight tan, neat nails, not too many colours at once, no loud patterns other than on a silk scarf and neat navy trousers with ballet flats.

maitaispicturebook.com Is someone that I think has the style you are looking for. She mainly does scarves but posts pictures of outfits and alternatives .

JuanPotatoTwo · 31/01/2015 18:16

Thanks googie, I'm relieved to say I don't do fleece so I'm ok on that score.

And thanks for the link Time - she really does know her scarves doesn't she?! Only had a quick look, off for a proper read.

DSis lives v close to Monaco and dressing to visit always stresses me out! Definitely low key chic. In April it could be quite warm, but might not be, so plan around layers - camisole vest, blouse, cardy, blazer. Maybe slim crops, a pair of full length slim trousers just in case and a dress to dress up or down. Jeans only if very smart.

Have fun revelling in affluence for a few days.

JuanPotatoTwo · 31/01/2015 19:25

Thank you Bike - your dsis is lucky :)

We lived in Beaulieu sur Mer last year - while my husband worked in Monaco - we were only 10 minutes from Monaco by train so often shopped there. There is a strong bling Russian contingent very very designer label-ish. In the Metropole Mall there are many boutiquey shops that attract that crowd. There is a more restrained group and also the cruise ships which is more 'american style'. The weather should be just perfect in April.

Thank you Jum
