I'm sahm, so doesn't really apply to me, but I would hate to wear the same thing day in day out
would actually find it depressing

I have sorted myself out with a "uniform" for work - which means I wear two different outfits for work, they both look nice but are not my favourite clothes and this keeps clothing I do like for outside work.

I couldn't work at a certain supermarket though as their uniform colour doesn't suit my skin tone though Wink

magicpixie · 24/01/2015 16:23

some uniforms are quite nice, like say a beauty therapists, and make sense as using oils etc, just think it would not be good wearing same thing everyday

magicpixie · 24/01/2015 16:24

oh ivy, what do you wear as your own uniform then?

OP posts:
magicpixie · 24/01/2015 16:25

anyway not saying I wouldn't do it, of course I would if I needed to, just that it would put me off and I wouldn't like it

I certainly used to, but it was designed by jaeger and people (Americans) used to love it, especially the hat.

It was so much easier, I didn't have to think about it, which was a bonus when getting up at 3:30am.

ivykaty44 · 24/01/2015 16:38

magic -I am wearing boots, very thick legging/jeggins and a long jumper dress at the moment. I work in an office/warehouse type place and comfort, warmth is important in my work. My other uniform is black trousers and jumper/long sleeve top with lace up timberland boots.

i can get dirty at work so do wear a work fleece at times to protect my own clothing.

i walk to work so want footwear to walk the three miles each day - high heels wouldn't be any good walking or at work.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 24/01/2015 16:43

I wear scrubs to work. I really like them, I have a nice selection of colours and they are so comfy.

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 24/01/2015 16:44

I work from home so I don't have a uniform. I can work in my PJ's Grin I used to work in the NHS though. A job's a job at the end of the day so it's not worth moaning about.

BlueberryWafer · 24/01/2015 16:45

I wear a uniform and I prefer it because it means my own clothes don't get grubby!

IAmAPaleontologist · 24/01/2015 17:02

Yeah I know just what you mean OP. When I was thinking about applying for midwifery I thought "I really want to be a midwife, I want to support women through an amazing transitional time in their lives. Oh no, wait, no, I can't do it, the uniform will strip me of all individuality and turn me into a clone."

Sadly I went on to do it anyway and day by day I can feel the individual thoughts leave my head.

Or maybe not.

passthewineplz · 24/01/2015 17:04

Yes. Saves on the expensive of buying work clothes. I spend a fortune on work clothes, as I get bored of wearing the same things and wanted to look nice.

I'm hoping to become a midwife

LadySybilLikesSloeGin · 24/01/2015 17:05

There is an air of conformity about a uniform though if you think about it. Individuality goes out of the window as they attempt to make their staff conform to their rules and... I may be overthinking this a little.

passthewineplz · 24/01/2015 17:06

Iam - do you not enjoy midwifery? Or is it the uniform you don't like?

usualsuspect333 · 24/01/2015 17:07

I work in catering, no choice but to wear a uniform.

I don't feel like a clone,I feel like someone who works in catering.

Bunbaker · 24/01/2015 17:09

"I just think it would make me feel striped of individuality and creativity and kinda like some sort of clone
it would actually put me off taking certain jobs to be honest"

That says a lot about you. Why does it matter so much?

I work in an office with people of all appearances, sizes and clothes tastes. I don't really notice what they are wearing, what colour their hair is or how many piercings or tattoos they have. So your argument kind of defeats the issue.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/01/2015 17:17

I'm an RMN, we don't have a uniform but I have my own uniform iyswim, much like most people I guess.

I have work trousers, work tops, work shoes. Just rotate the same stuff week after week. Fuck my individuality, I need to look neat and professional and it needs to be easily be washed and inexpensive to replace. I've had clothes ripped and drinks chucked over me, it needs to be cheap stuff.

Out of work I wear mini skirts and doc martens at this time of year, not sure that would go down so well or be quite so practical at work!

NCIS · 24/01/2015 17:33

I like wearing a uniform, it makes me feel professional, people treat me differently and the bonus is that, as I trot off to work tonight, I won't get vomit or worse on my own clothes. Result all round I say and I still feel I can be an individual.

Jackieharris · 24/01/2015 17:45

I wouldn't want a job that required a uniform.

I remember a pub job I had at uni and we had to wear white shirts/blouses. I'm a J cup so I had to wear an enormous size that felt like a bin bag and I got comments from men who could see my bra through it. Never again.

Zanzibaragain · 24/01/2015 18:10

Deeply depressing Just how judgemental about the clothes people wear many of you are.
Many years ago I lived in Bangkok teaching at a boys school, I wore a respectful and basic skirt and shirt. Walking past a group of gap year/ back packers, one shouted out " look at her in her uniform" , turned around to look at an indentical sea of tie dye, ripped shirts, fishermans trousers and tattoos, couldn't tell any of them apart.
Sometimes you put yourself into a uniform.

CMOTDibbler · 24/01/2015 18:16

I've had jobs where I wore a uniform, and one where I wore a white coat over my normal clothes. Much easier than having to think of things to wear, and I loved my white coat which was a convenient container for all my work stuff

IAmAPaleontologist · 24/01/2015 19:11

passthewine i enjoy it very much, i don't mind the uniform. It was a comment on the op's post!

magicpixie · 24/01/2015 19:14

Jackie, I don't know why some uniforms are basically see through
I would seriously object to that, esp in a pub

when you work in pub do men often say rude things and try and chat you up
are they worse when pissed

OP posts:
magicpixie · 24/01/2015 19:17

nurse/midwives uniforms are usually v badly fitted
usually 3 sizes too small
or huge

do you get a choice of wearing a top and trousers
or do you have to wear the dress thing

OP posts:
magicpixie · 24/01/2015 19:18

plus nurse/midwife uniforms seem to do this weird thing, nurse reaches up,to get something, the dress goes up and gets stuck, and has to be pulled back down

Greengardenpixie · 24/01/2015 19:20

well if I needed that job what I wore wouldnt feature! A uniform is no big deal. Just shove it on without thinking. I don't have a uniform in my job but if I did, the only thing that would annoy me is having to conform to a companies identity....not the fact that I couldnt choose my own or be fashionable.
