Walking shoes for city break

Hi,

I'm going to New York in April so expect to be walking about a gazillion miles. I am stumped as to what shoes to take. I usually wear heeled boots, ballet pumps or converse high tops, none of these will be suitable.

I only ever wear trainers when I go for a run and can't imagine wearing them any other time and I think proper walking shoes are horrendously ugly - sorry I know I sound judgey, walking shoes are great if you're walking around the countryside, but not when wandering through a city - so not sure what to get.

Any recommendations?
Thanks a lot
x

I'm going to a European city for a long weekend in March, and have the same dilemma. I've decide to wear either (a) my Nike Air trainers; or (b) Skechers trainers, not the Go Walk variety, but they do some really nice brightly coloured trainers. I'll have a rubbish time if my feet hurt, so I'm going to be sensible.

PS - I went to New York a few years ago; New Yorkers are a VERY casual bunch, and wear comfy shoes!

What about a sturdier pair of converse? I used to walk a lot in low converse. You cab get converse one star that are really comfortable.

Have a look at Merrell - I have to wear something really supportive because I have a dodgy very old skiing injury to my knee and if I walk a lot without proper shoes it hurts.

Some of them are not too bad - currently have big reductions.

I also think you're best avoiding anything completely flat, just the smallest elevation will support your foot better than a totally flat shoe, which is why I've decided upon trainers.

I did London in Converse last summer and swore, on day four, that the next time I go on a city break I will have proper trainers. I'm still looking for some that a) I don't hate and b) don't make me look like an absolute idiot.

Fitflop boots or 'sneakers'? Have a look on their website as there are lots of reductions.
I have a pair of the sneakers, which I am sure were called something different but look the same, and I use them for just this sort of thing. They are very comfy (I have done city and country walks in them) and look more like converse than trainers. (I hate trainers but I can do these ones)

Oh I'd forgotten I used to have a pair of converse one stars years ago and they were ace. V v comfy. I used to be a trackie bottoms and trainers type of gal (when I was a teenager) now I would only ever wear trainers when training (and trackies NEVER!).
Really don't want to suffer while I'm away tho. I'll have a look at some of the suggestions you've given, thank you x
