what vitamins do you take and do they do anything?

I have tried lots of different vitamins over the years eg evening primrose, B6, currently taking a multivitamin with iron. I can't say any of them made any difference whatsoever.

Can anyone recommend any for improved skin or general health and wellbeing or energy?

The tests were not taken by a GP they were run by a consultant at a top London hospital, privately.

squoosh · 23/01/2015 15:41

Phew, was worried they were taken by a consultant at a middling public hospital.

Behooven · 23/01/2015 15:53

pinkfrocks that's super you can have tests done by a "consultant" in a "top London Hospital, privately" I'm sure they run their tests much better than the bog standard NHS doctors do. And obviously other people need supplements as they are gorging on "cake and crisps". Hmm

I take Napiers Hebridean seagreens organic kelp supplements to support my iodine levels as I have an under active thyroid. It has worked wonders for the foggy tiredness I used to suffer from.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/01/2015 15:59

And Heaven help you if you're forced to go to a middling public hospital outside of London.

I was diagnosed as very anaemic a while back, and, whilst I still don't feel very well, the iron I've been taking has made my fingernails much better!

BallroomWithNoBalls · 23/01/2015 16:30

Well done pinkfrocks on your exemplary diet.

I generally eat very well but I am just getting over 4 months of hyperemesis and will throw up anything that tastes of anything at all - so bland carbs or nothing at the moment.

Or is that not a good enough reason to be using vitamins as a temporary source of nutrition while I struggle to keep good in my tummy long enough to get nutrition out of it?

There are lots of reasons why people don't eat a perfectly balanced diet every day - that is when supplements are useful.

StatisticallyChallenged · 23/01/2015 16:53

Levels of Vitamin D deficiency in Scotland are massive - too many clouds and not enough sunlight are major factors! >80% fall below recommended minimum according to one study.

pinkfrocks · 23/01/2015 17:26

behooven sorry you feel the need to try to score a cheap point. Your problem- not mine. I was responding to the comment that NHS tests and guidelines may not have given me a proper reading.
If you are jealous that I have company medical care then that's your issue.

Might have helped if you'd included that in your original post!

I've said time after time that people without an illness or condition don't need to supplement. Anyone who is, does.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 23/01/2015 17:53

I dont have an illness or a condition.

As a pp noted loads of people are vitD deficient due to lack.of sunlight it is pretty much impossible to get enough vitD through diet alone.

I also need to take B12/K2 either in supplement form or fortified foods. I am vegan.

I wasn't aware being vegan or Scottish was an illness or condition?

StatisticallyChallenged · 23/01/2015 17:57

Now now ItsAllGoingToBeFine, you know we Scots are just dafties who don't have enough vitamin D cos we don't go out in the sun with bare arms every day Wink...

RIZZ0 · 23/01/2015 17:58

I take a calming vitamin with chamomile in it and also high strength fish oil. They both help with those prone to stress or anxiety. I'm cool as a cucumber as long as I take them!

Also take magnesium citrate for constipation and crappy sleep. It's a muscle relaxant so good for peeps with restless legs too.

mystery fairy - does the ferrous sulphate bung you up? It did me (but I am prince to constipation if I don't eat salad every day), and I took Floradix instead when I needed it, it's good.

squoosh · 23/01/2015 17:58

I'm in Scotland but I'm not Scottish, does this count as a self inflicted illness?

StatisticallyChallenged · 23/01/2015 18:07

Yup, all your own fault Squoosh! Actually, it depends...have you been here long enough to achieve that particular sunless shade of white-bordering-on-blue which is often seen on the first of our 5 days of sunshine a year, when skinny guys decide it's "taps aff" time? If you have I reckon you can be an honorary scot

BallroomWithNoBalls · 23/01/2015 18:09

Pinkfrocks I did refer to my pregnancy and vegetable aversion in my first post but that's not really the point - there are LOADS of reasons why people don't eat balanced diets - I haven't in the past when I've been backpacking, when I've been on holiday in the US, when I've been postpartum and unable to coordinate much beyond keeping baby fed.

As other people have implied - it is irrelevant whether it's by choice or from illness whether people don't eat a balanced diet - if vitamins help, all well and good. The only danger is if people think they don't need to bother trying to eat a balanced diet because they take vitamins - but I don't see any evidence of anyone on this thread doing that. Your smuggery is a bit off-putting

Behooven · 23/01/2015 19:59

Grin Grin at my being jealous of company medical care
You don't know me at all!

You're very touchy btw

squoosh · 23/01/2015 20:02

Statistically I have the pallor of the undead, I'm truly an honourary Scot! And by the way, the dream of seeing Big Tam and Wee Rab in 'taps aff' season is all that's getting me through the winter.

flux500 · 23/01/2015 20:59

I take vit b complex and also fish oils with selenium. They minimise the amount of migraines I get quite significantly Smile

StatisticallyChallenged · 23/01/2015 21:02

You're fine then, if you're undead then you're practically a native! Grin

I walk through either Princes St Gardens or the Meadows in Edinburgh most days, come the 5 days of summer it's, erm, interesting!
