Moisturiser for dry, chapped, sensitive skin.

Just that.

I have a 38 year old hide. It's a bit dry all year round, but manageable. But I run a lot, and once it gets cold, the skin on my face gets really chapped and uncomfortable. After a snowy day on Sunday, I slathered EA 8 hour cream ( the proper vaseliney stuff) on as a night cream - normally does the trick. This morning had to do the same as a normal day moisturiser. And my skin still hurts to touch - have gone to bed with a face slathered in proper industrial Vaseline.

I know I need a different regime, but where to start?! I like nice-smelling stuff (and find rose / citrus scents calming) but apart from that I don't know where to spend my money. Heal me, MN!

I use Aveeno Colloidal Oatmeal CREAM (not the lotion). A good layer of that before I go for my walk/run. Very protective/cushiony on the skin but no spf I'm afraid.

I'd never heard of that, but just googled it and the reviews are amazing! I'll pop up to Boots in my break, thank you!

I am a big fan of ultrabland from lush. It's an oil based cream that works with hot cloth cleansing. It smells good and calms and balances my combination/ hormonal acne skin.
I've started using their celestial moisturiser at night which is meant to be good for sensitive skin. I really like it and I have no more red patches on my cheeks/ chin. Grin

Op, make sure you get THE CREAM. The lotion is good but the cream is way, way better. I use it at night in winter and it plumps my face nicely overnight! Makes it velvety soft.

squoosh · 21/01/2015 15:47

Oilatum Natural Repair face cream was made for these situations.

donkir · 21/01/2015 15:51

Another vote for Aveeno cream. Expensive but bloody brilliant.

agoodbook · 21/01/2015 15:55

Neutrogena concentrated hand cream works for me

Threeplus1 · 21/01/2015 16:00

Vaseline is good as a protector but it will not moisturise the skin. Personally I prefer to make my own dry skin blends.... Vitamin E oil with avocado oil and melted pure Shea butter or coconut oil. It's both moisturizing and protecting.

Also look at what you are washing your face with, that could be further drying your skin. Go for unscented and try to avoid products containing parabens or sulfates

Hth!

Mineral oil- eg Vaseline- is not supposedly good for your skin.

I'd layer your face stuff; start with a serum which penetrates the skin, then add a moisturiser. I like Clinique stuff because they do offer the choice of dry-very dry moisturisers. I used to use Youth Surge or Moisture Defence but they also do Moisture Surge which I think would suit you and they do a leave-on overnight mask in the same range. You should also use sun screen when you are out running- even on overcast days- high SPF. I like Clinique City Block which is slightly tinted but non-oily and does the job.

Blush realised you needed face cream

sksk · 21/01/2015 17:22

CeraVe - great stuff. You can get it from Amazon and the tub is huge. They do a lotion version as well as a cream.

rosiepinkcheeks · 21/01/2015 18:58

I highly recommend Avene Cicalfate Repair Cream.

ComeClose · 21/01/2015 19:02

Aveeno is good for chapped/sore skin.

Aveda 'Hand Relief' is natural and very calming/deeply moisturing.

Jurlique rose hand cream comes in quite a big tube, is lovely and thick (almost like a balm rather than lotion) and smells of roses. My personal fave for craggy 37 yr old hands Grin. I think feelunique.com still have it on offer at the moment.

ComeClose · 21/01/2015 19:02

Oh crap I thought you were talking about your hands Blush.

annadina · 21/01/2015 23:15

I use Aveeno lotion or cream depending on how dry my skin feels.

avagosling · 22/01/2015 11:58

The only thing that helps me at times of super dry skin is natural shea butter and rosehip oil, skin goes back to normal in about 3 days

auldspinster · 22/01/2015 12:31

Boots have started selling Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre, great for really dry skin.

MimiSunshine · 22/01/2015 15:34

Vaseline or other petroleum based products are not moisturisers, they are barriers. So while they'll protect your skin while out don't use them over night.
I recommend Dr Organic Manuka Honey products. They smell lovely (unless you hate Honey) and the little pot lasts ages.

Also consider what you use to wash / cleanse your face. Some products are very drying.

QueenInTheNorth · 22/01/2015 15:56

Avene Rich Recovery cream is great, and the extra rich compensating cream. For skin like you describe, Avene is the brand to look at.

yazzy85 · 22/01/2015 17:14

I love Aveeno in the winter too, its great on sensitive skin for that extra boost of moisture when the weather is drying your skin out.

BallroomWithNoBalls · 22/01/2015 18:02

When you run - get some Soltan SPF50 baby Suncream. Wear it over your moisturiser and it will protect your face. It's gentle and non pore clogging, I use it as makeup primer, it's about £2 and much nicer than the ones branded at women for anti ageing!

And then buy a tub of Nivea blue pot and slather your face in it morning and night until it feels better enough to only use at night.

BowiesJumper · 23/01/2015 09:49

I use aveeno cream as my daily moisturiser and it's great. Works well as a base for makeup too because it's not greasy.

However, if I get any stubborn dry patches etc then la Roche posay cicaplast b5 balm is amazing for 'repairs' as it were.
