This 40 year old needs some new makeup, help!

Hi ladies
I'm off out shopping tomorrow on the lookout for some new makeup.

Would love a new primer, foundation and a fabulous concealer. Nothing that will settle into my wrinkles, but will give me a gorgeous natural glow with great coverage
Also need a new blusher, eye shadows, mascara and lipstick. I love the look of Lydia Elise Millens makeup, but unfortunately I don't have her plump skin.

I'm 40 with slightly dehydrated skin on my cheeks and eyes, but can become slightly oily around the t zone. I am fair skinned with blue eyes and brown hair plus I haven't got the longest eyelashes.

Any suggestions ladies, was thinking MAC, Estée Lauder etc, but what do you swear by?

Yes don't use same product under eye and to cover blemishes, they're 2 completely different products. L Mercier is quite thick - warm it on the back of your hand and apply with a brush or fingers dependent on what you're covering, the G Armani one you could use under your eyes too actually as not cakey/thick.

I am also 41 and have just done the same as you! My best buys have been:
Nars orgasm blusher (the stick)
Too faced boudoir eyes eyeshadow palette
A very bright fuchsia powder blusher (inspired by a Lisa Eldridge tutorial, I would never have thought to use a colour like this but it looks amazing!) from a Spanish supermarket (!)
Maybelline brow drama
A big blusher brush, an eyeshadow brush and a stiff slanted brush for lining the eyes with powder

I'm still in the process of renovating my makeup bag, so reading this thread with interest!

Oops sorry, just noticed you are only 40. Didn't mean to add a year on Blush

SuperFlyHigh · 18/01/2015 12:40

To be honest with you what suits some won't suit others. I've never liked eg Laura mercier tinted moisturiser (wrong colour, coverage) or their secret concealor (too much bother and a bit fiddle/chalky on me).

Mac lipsticks are great Syrup is one fave. A great eyeliner is good but i use boots natural collections, body shop navy and urban decay (got a set of double edged ones at Christmas). It all depends and can be trial and error.

If you're still reading OP I'd get less rather than more products at first and maybe some cheapies to experiment with so you won't feel you've wasted money otherwise!

Hi, thank you mrsgolightly for your list, sounds like you have some fab makeup

I've been and got myself a sample of Mac face and body plus I got the prep and prime spray to try

I looked at lipsticks and I tried honey love but not sure if it's too bland for me. Maybe with a good lip liner it might look better, but they didn't have spice in stock

Popped into boots and was surprised how lovely the revlon and rimmel lipsticks are, pretty good quality. But again, this lady couldn't decide what to get

Was wondering what shade of blusher would look nice, has anyone ever tried a heather shade

Also, what mascara so might bring this short sparse eyelashes to life

Soap and glory kohl pencils are best in the business.

Very soft and easy to use, can be smudged easily for smoky eyes.

I use it as eye liner. It's fab, esp in brown.

MrsGolightly · 18/01/2015 21:55

Did you try twig lipstick by Mac? that's got a bit more oomph?

coffeenut · 19/01/2015 08:14

Dior for mascara all the way (I use diorshow overcurl - lengthens, thickens & curls).

I find mac f&b is too thin/light coverage. If it doesnt agree with you, try chanel vitalumiere like a pp.suggested.

Lips - looks at some of the revlon chubby sticks (or whatever they are called). I have a couple of the matte balm sticks ("unapologetic" which i love & "sultry" ... also want the nude one which i think is called demure?). Also recently received NARS carthage (hot pink) which im in love with.

SeasonsEatings · 19/01/2015 08:33

I am 40 too. Bare Minerals foundation is worth a try, also their bright and bold eyeliner and eyelid bright primer. Once you get the hang of applying you can do it in a few minutes and it lasts all day (I don't take any make up out with me other than lippy. I use a no.7 mascara as I found both Lancome and Dior clumpy and not worth the difference in money.

Go a few times to a department store and get made up?

MissMiss1 · 19/01/2015 20:12

Mrsgolightly I totally forgot the name of the lipstick so didn't try it, lol!

Will do the next time I visit.

I tried f&b this morning but not sure if I'm applying it right. Maybe I'm just used to a thinker foundation, found this quite watery.

I also tried adding an illuminator to my concealer and it did seem to make a difference. I used the revlon illuminating eye primer mixed with a bobbi brown concealer I'd forgotten I had

I'll have a look at the revlon chubby sticks as I've always found their lip products good quality and always last pretty well

Is vitalumiere glittery?

No.7 mascaras, I've never tried one. I'll go and have a good look

Thank you so much ladies

Chanel vitalumiere foundation is not glittery at all. It gives a light and natural looking cover.

MissMiss1 · 20/01/2015 22:09

Thank you ladies

I wore my new mac eyeshadow today, love the colour.

Any ideas for blusher colours?
Are creams or powders better?
