Problems with Real Technique brush....

I got the buffing brush at the beginning of last year. Thought it was great, used it every day to put my foundation on and washed it once a week with baby shampoo, left it to air dry. Around June last year it started to shed a lot of hair so contacted Real Techniques and they asked me to send some pics then sent a replacment to me without any problem. Fast forward to last when I'm putting my foundation on using the new "replacment" brush and the whole bloody head of the brush (all the bristles) came out of the head of the brush. I've been using it and cleaning it exactly the same way that I have with all my other brushes. So I contacted them again and they pretty much said "tough, we've already sent a replacement..."

I don't think I'm particularly heavy handed with the brushes. I've had MAC brushes in my make up bag for nearly 10yrs that are still in pretty good condition. Anyone had any similar problems with Real Techniques brushes ?

No mines great.

Are you soaking the brush? Stand it up to dry?

ilooklikemrsploppy · 15/01/2015 23:20

I put a dollop of baby shampoo in my hand, wet the brush head under the tap and then swirl it around in the palm of my hand until it's clean. I dry the excess water off with a towel then leave it to dry on its side.

Is the water you're using hot? It can damage the glue over time, that's why they tell you to use tepid water and to avoid soaking the head of the brush. The 'ok-ed' method gets rid of bugger all product.

maybe use a brush cleaner instead of baby shampoo

i have used a bare minerals and clinique brush cleanser and never had a problem

blahbloodyblah · 15/01/2015 23:34

That's weird op. I'm more thorough/rough than you and my brush is fine

I use a bobbi brown cleaner but it shouldn't make much difference.

ilooklikemrsploppy · 15/01/2015 23:34

TheCraic no just warm water, not hot water.

chip I used to use specific brush cleaner when I was working but its too bloody expensive I find when you're cleaning your brushes every week, especially now I'm not working. Plus I'm sure they actually suggest using baby shampoo. Looks like I'm pretty much stuck with it now anyway as they've said they can't do anything. I appreciate that they can't provide replacement after replacement but this has pissed me off. Won't be buying any of their stuff in future.

Try washing less frequently? I don't do it weekly and it's fine

ilooklikemrsploppy · 15/01/2015 23:41

Well the buffing brush is well and truly knackered so the only place it will be going is in the bin.

Maybe wash my others less frequently now. Having suffered from acne in the past and having quite oily skin I was always a bit "eurgh" at the thought of using a brush that hadn't been washed for a couple of weeks though.

TheCraicDealer · 15/01/2015 23:47

No, I think you're right to be doing it weekly. That's certainly what a lot of beauty blogs say you should be doing. It may well be that RT and other brands just aren't used to that amount of washing over an extended period, and they're knackered quicker than your dearer MAC ones.

If you're looking a replacement try Zoeva, they're getting good reviews and v reasonable. I have the stippling brush and it is good. And it matches the rest of my MAC/Sallys basics brushes, unlike my RT one (I know it shouldn't matter but it pissed me off).

Lndnmummy · 16/01/2015 09:38

Is it the stippling brush? There was a bad batch of brushes a while back I was told. Returned both of mine to Boots and they were replaced with no fuss.

ilooklikemrsploppy · 17/01/2015 14:47

No it was the buffing brush. Never thought of taking it back to Boots ( I bought the original there but obviously got the replacement direct from Real Techniques). But then that would be very dishonest and I would never do such a thing Wink

My 2yr old stippling brush fell apart yesterday Sad

MyFancyPants · 17/01/2015 19:07

I had exactly the same problem with my stippling brush a month or so ago and just binned it! Didn't even think to try and get it replaced, but it has put me off buying more RT brushes in future.

Dognado · 18/01/2015 21:53

My mum had the same with her stippling brush, just fell apart after a month, mine is fine. Lots of online reviews about them falling apart so they must know it's not you, which is a bit crap.

ilooklikemrsploppy · 20/01/2015 16:37

I've missed all the online reviews of them falling apart Angry. Even more pissed off now !

My teenage daughter loves

FrustratedFrugal · 04/12/2016 16:42

The same happened to me - a quick dip in lukewarm soapy water and the entire head of a RT stippling brush fell off. I cleaned a bunch of MAC brushes at the same time and they are fine. The brush was about a year old and had been used for about six months.
