Chin and jawline spots....

Hi, can anyone shed any light on why I constantly have spots on my chin and jawline. They're horrible, red and angry. Having managed puberty, my teenager years and 3 pregnancies without being too affected I'm just at a loss as to why I'm getting them now and how to clear them up.

Can anyone recommend any products? I am currently using Liz Earle C&P and moisturise with Sean cream a combo which has previously worked really well. I make sure I cleanse and properly rinse the problem areas but this doesn't seem to help. I don't know what to do but I'm really fed up.

They are probably hormone spots. Like you, I avoided spots in my teens although pregnancy did bring about the odd hum-dinger of a chin spot. But skin has definitely become more spotty in my 40s.

I do find that the more I fuss around that area the worse it becomes. Sometimes just letting nature take it's course is better than trying to intervene.

I have tried Clarins products which work well. A beauty therapist told me to put a dab of face mask on a spot & leave overnight to clear it. It does the trick, in as much as any swelling subsides and it doesn't come to a head. However, I found on the larger spots I would still be able to feel a tiny bump under my skin, indicating that it hadn't actually solved the problem but that the spot would just lay dormant for a little longer before rearing it's head!

However, I have recently reverted back to Simple products (eldest DS uses them as well so I try and make use of the 2for1 type offers). I use their regular face wash twice a day and the face scrub twice a week. I also use their deep cleansing mask once a week. I really cannot see a difference between the results from this brand compared to Clarins so I will stick with this for a while longer.

They stopped for me when I cut back on dairy. Eliminated all dairy products for a few months, now have the occasional cappuccino or ice cream as a treat once a week or so but not dairy in any real quantities.

Think this is linked ot the hormones in milk (either synthetic or real cow hormones IYSWIM)

I get these. Definitely hormonal. Using a facial brush daily has helped. Plus retin-a every second night.

Could be PCOS? I've been plagued with this all my life!
If they are hormonal then many spot treatments won't work, they will come back.
Are you overweight, do you have an excess hair problem? Are your periods regular?

What's that cream called?? Rosey somethingorother, supposed to be brilliant for spot prone skin. Someone will know what I mean :) x

La Roche-Posay Effaclar Smile

CambridgeBlue · 11/01/2015 15:58

I get these and the Effaclar definitely helps but nothing seems to shift them completely. Hate them - they're both painful and ugly :(

bluesbaby · 11/01/2015 16:33

Sadly cheese seems to give me chin spots. Try cutting down on dairy.

Eliza22 · 11/01/2015 17:31

Hormonal. I'm 52 and wasnt a spotty teenager, glowed throughout pregnancy and now, at menopause have got spotty. I've bought Effaclear MicoExfoliant Toner and it appears to be doing the trick.

WhereIsMyFurryHat · 11/01/2015 18:32

Thanks all, your replies are much appreciated.

I suspect both hormonal and a reaction to dairy. I'm not sure that PCOS is an issue, I have regular periods and am ok weight wise.

I'm going to try and drop dairy this week. I've cut it out before for reasons other than spots/ acne and I felt great.

I'm going to try the la Roche posay stuff. Off to google stockists.

Do you rest your chin on your hand a lot? Or touch your face in that area as a habit for any reason?

This can make it worse once you've got one or two spots - touching just spreads it all around.

Lilybensmum1 · 11/01/2015 18:46

Speak to your GP and get anti biotic face wash and anti inflammatory spot cream, it took a while to work and I still get the odd spot but it worked. Believe me I tried everything.

On the plus side apparently you get less wrinkles if you have spotty skin (maybe wishful thinking). Good luck it's horrible.

3mum · 11/01/2015 21:14

Second idea of a trip to the GP. I developed these when I hit midlife and the GP has prescribed me an antibiotic liquid roll on which really helps. Would not say I never get a spot but they do not get a chance to turn into those huge deep red cystic spots I used to get.

EthelCardew · 12/01/2015 20:40

I have this too Sad and it's incredibly frustrating. I never had spots as a teenager!

Period = spot. Wash too much = spot. Moisturise too much = spot. Try a new product = spot. Wear make up = spot. If I just leave my damn face alone (wash with a hot cloth only), it calms down but if I leave it too long before doing a better cleanse = spot. Arrgghh! Angry

Effaclar Duo as a spot-on does seem to make them less angry but most of the time it just keeps them under the skin, still visible bumps and for longer too. Also, I once got so fed up with them I decided to use it on my whole face, which I think it says to do in the instruction and got flaming red hot skin, it was really scary! So I use with caution now.

My skin is generally really fussy and sensitive anyway, so it's not my only problem but it would be nice to have a face routine that I can stick to that doesn't cause a flare up.

I'm going to give the dairy thing a go and see what happens. Do you have to give it up completely, like, not even a drop in tea? Or would a drastic reduction have an effect too?

How can hormonal issues that cause this be sorted?

SignoraStronza · 12/01/2015 20:42

I got these on the mire name, or any hormonal contraception contrasting progesterone.
