Concealer to use of rosacea / spots without foundation?

I have the pustular form of rosacea (sounds lovely doesn't it?) which means the redness isn't too bad but I get clusters of very red, angry looking spots when I have a flareup. I'm not a great makeup user, and anyway find that all the foundations I've tried make my skin much worse. Can anyone suggest a gentle concealer that I could use on the blemishes without foundation? I'm not looking for a flawless complexion - just toning down the worst of it really. I've tried cliniques's powder anti-redness concealer, which is fine at just evening out a bit of redness, but not for toning down the actual spots.
TIA

I think you will find it difficult to fully conceal them without applying a good deal of makeup. However, if your aim is to put makeup on as little skin as possible (ie, only on the spots) then I suggest trying Vichy Dermablend foundation patted on very carefully with a small brush, blending into the surrounding skin. I use this product for my own spots, after applying all over foundation. I've never tried it on its own with no other makeup but if the colour matches and it's blended carefully it should work.

Getting a great match without the benefit of an overall foundation may be tricky, though. Explore the possibilities of other full-coverage and long-wearing foundations applied to spots in the same manner.

Have you tried mineral make up?

I use Bare Minerals (amongst others) and I use the concealer on it's own.

Have a look online at various types and order samples - like all products their ingredients differ and also you might prefer some colours/ranges.

Just look out for the ones now sold by major cosmetic firms - they tend to use fillers like talc to bulk out the product.

This one clinique

I swear by it. At times I am quite spotty - but hate the feeling of a full face of foundation.

it's thick and cakey - which is great for small, raised spots. Not so good for larger, flakey scabs though.

A tube lasts me ages - as you use such a small dot each time.

I would try revlon Color stay foundation as concealer.

Alternatively my DM uses Jane iredale makeup over her pustular rosacea (she gets treated with laser too)

Oh - thanks for all the ideas - really helpful. I'll look into them all. Coffeenut - does your DM find the laser treatment helpful? I've heard mixed reports.

It's not what you asked about but Ole Henriksen Nurture Me is a really good soothing cream for rosacea. I put it on my cheeks at the first sign of an itchy spot and it calms it down straight away. It's not cheap but it lasts forever as you only need to use a tiny amount.

giddly · 09/01/2015 12:36

Thanks Sukie - will look into this too.

Clinique do a 'redness' range which includes foundation- maybe it would work as a concealer?

arlagirl · 09/01/2015 15:04

Giddly. .I have pustular rosacea too Sad.
Flares up in the sun and under stress.

I have a bit of a flareup at the moment ...I use an Hourglass concealer and Clinique CC cream generally . my face is ok with that.

I have Rosex cream from dr.

giddly · 09/01/2015 16:11

Thanks for these further suggestions. I use the anti redness moisturiser by clinique - hadn't thought about the foundation, but a good idea. Yes, mine is sun and stress related too, arlagirl. I tried Rosex but it didn't help much so now I use oral antibiotics for flare ups.

Green concealer is good for reducing redness but you would need a foundation or tinted moisturiser over the top

PuppyMonkey · 09/01/2015 16:16

I have nose rosacea and use the Clinique foundation - it blends in really nicely so you wouldn't have to slap all over face to match up.

fatherpeeweestairmaster · 09/01/2015 17:31

urgh, totally sympathise. Rosacea spots are like nothing I ever had as a teenager - really vicious and sore! I find the Bourjois CC creme good for balancing out redness, and Bare Minerals quite good at covering spots, although it can be drying. I find now I need to use a primer underneath.

Incidentally, Rosex did nothing for me, and I was wary of taking oral ABs too much, so I asked for a prescription for Finacea gel (azaelic ? acid) and it's MUCH more effective. It seems to bring the spots to a head much more quickly avoiding that painful throbbing stage.

Yes my DM has a noticeable difference when she has laser treatments regularly

jengalash · 10/01/2015 12:43

I can recommend Younique Mineral concealer, a friend of mine has the same problem and swears by it. It's a natural product, not the cheapest, but good value. You can check it out here www.youniqueproducts.com/JenniferGarbett/products/view/US-1062-00#.VLEba3uGOu8

Vichy dermablend

nannyj · 10/01/2015 14:39

Have spots and use Laura Mercier but not sure how it would look without foundation.

giddly · 12/01/2015 10:39

Thanks very much for the responses everyone - and interesting to hear about the laser treatment- I've been a bit wary of this.

Hi, I have it too and have found that concealer of any type (well, the ones that I have used) have not helped at all. I have done as pps have said - dabbed a little bit of foundation / tinted moisturiser on it.

I have also found that the anti-biotic gel is really affective. It took a while to have an impact - I was having red bumps (which then developed into spots with a white head) and if I apply the gel twice a day, the bumps didn't really develop into spots. Although I still needed to disguise the redness, I didn't have as many bumps to cover if you see what I mean. I've been using it for 4 or 5 months now and I don't tend to have break outs much at all now.

Hi. I find Real deal by Laura Geller is a great concealer and oil free. You can buy from QVC and use the 30 day return policy if you try it and dont like it.
