DD (13) in tears again this morning because of her dark circles under eyes

I know teens this age often get obsessed about one aspect of their appearance that they hate, but it's the second morning this week that she's been in tears about this.

She does have very noticeable dark circles under her eyes. I have the same problem and so does my dad, so it's clearly hereditary.

I just wondered if anyone could recommend any diet / lifestyle changes that might help, or any better treatment that would get rid of them properly. She's not meant to wear make up at school but a good quality concealer might not be a problem.

Ive always had these and asked if Im sick when I wear no makeup. Seems to be a genetic thing as a lot of my family do, ds also seems to have taken after me and has them. His are very noticeable if he's tired. Collection 2000 is indeed one of the best concealers. Ive tried loads of more expensive ones and only tried it after reading a thread on here.

Some people just have dark circles under their eyes! I don't think diet changes will make a big difference if you and your dad are the same OP.

I have always had very dark circles under my eyes. My glasses disguise / hide them!

OccamsLadyshave · 09/01/2015 13:08

Yes I agree. I wear my sunglasses for 8 months of the year!

I have always had dark circles, and ds takes after me... Sad
Rubbish diet and not enough sleep makes them worse, but they never ever go away.
If concealer is not an option, have you considered self tanning moisturiser? A slight tan might improve the overall appearance, and it's not make up.

Touche Eclat is a highlighter rather than a concealer. Get her to try the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer available in Boots. It costs about a fiver and is ace.

It sounds as though her dark circles are hereditary so as long as she's getting enough sleep and enough iron I'd imagine they're here to stay.

Annarose2014 · 09/01/2015 14:15

For dark circles you'r better off with a salmon/peach toned corrector. "Normal" concealers don't really cover really dark circles (though agree the Collection 2000 Lasting Finish is the best in Boots of the normal kind.)

Bobbi Brown do correctors in various depths of salmon & pink (they match you), and for a cheap one, Essence used to do a trio of concealers that had a regular beige, a green for redness and a salmon for dark circles. Cheap as chips and just as good.

Annarose2014 · 09/01/2015 14:20

Oh it seems they've replaced that trio with pens

My friend used to have this problem and she went to a chinese herbalist who diagnosed a slight kidney deficiency for which she was given some herbal tablets to take, made a world of difference.

burnishedsilver · 09/01/2015 17:25

Have her iron (and yours) tested, particularly if her periods are heavy.

youllshootyoureyeout · 09/01/2015 17:27

I have this and bags as well (inherited from my Dad). I use the under eye roll ons to tighten and brighten. You can get concealer specifically for this problem I think, have a Google. I used to focus on it too in my 20s as it drove me mad so I can sympathize with your dd.

Cocolepew · 09/01/2015 17:28

I've always had them too, but tgey get worse if Im constpated Max Fsctor do a yellow pencil and I think L'Oreal has one out now. I find them to be good but I wear BB cream as well so its blended in.

BearPear · 09/01/2015 18:56

Soap & Glory Kick-Ass concealer is lovely, I have never found a product that worked for me before.

Coumarin · 09/01/2015 23:51

I have hereditary dark 'circles' and I'm very pale.

Nothing will ever get rid of them but eating sugar makes them appear much darker and drinking lots of water makes them slightly less dark.

Best concealers I have found amongst the literally dozens I've tried are Laura Mercier ones and most recently, Clarins instant concealer.

The clarins one is definitely the best I've used. All need setting with a tiny bit of translucent powder.

Sorry she's feeling self conscious because of nasty bullies. How horrible for her. I've never had a single comment on them so they really are desperate for something to pick on. Flowers

Coumarin · 09/01/2015 23:54

Oh and Sali Hughes and Lisa Eldridge have done columns and how-to videos on concealing dark under eyes.

Coumarin · 09/01/2015 23:59

Oops sorry I've RTFT now and seen you don't think she's being picked on. I hope she starts feeling more confident soon anyway.

VenusRising · 10/01/2015 00:09

Occams, if she has allergies to things, I bet she has allergies to her food.

Get her to an allergist specialist to be tested.

Allergies run in families, so it could be that your dad and you have them too.

A skin prick test will identify her allergens and you to can then take action.

Fwiw being upset at something like this is a sign she has allergies: she's hypersensitive because of the high alert her histamine levels are at.

kelda · 10/01/2015 07:53

The dark circles are probably related to her allergies - atopic shiners. My ds has them, also dh and one of the grandfathers. Ds's allergies have improved and so have the dark circles.

Agree, get her tested and proper advice for her allergies. The food allergy test may be different to the general test.
