Bridal Undies

I'm at the dreaded stage of having to start looking for the underwear I'll wear on my big day, and quite frankly I'm not relishing the idea of this task at all - traipsing round shop after shop having to get my kit on-and-off while lingerie shop assistants faff around with my unmentionables is not my idea of a nice day out! And I reckon it'll take a few weeks of this to find what I need.

Therefore, to try and cut out all this traipsing and stripping, I wondered if those of you who have already been through this experience could offer any brand advice or specific retailer recommendations?

I'm a small busted gal who needs a bit of 'boosting' in the ole boobie department (I had a dress fitting yesterday and the shop assistant loudly pointed out how "we'll have to take this in quite a bit at the bust area hey!" while tugging at my decidedly empty top half Blush. My dress is also strapless with a lace overlay, so my bra will have to be strapless too.

If there are any other small busted ladies who wore a strapless dress for their big day, I'd love to know...what underwear were you wearing?!? (sorry Grin)

Can't link but Google the bra band project to see what a 30d looks like btw -on a 30 band a d cup is pretty petite

Ememem84 · 10/01/2015 10:25

I'd second the wonder bra.

My dress had straps and I'd told the dress lady that I would be wearing a bra with straps. She included strap holders and some sort of fixture to secure bra to dress. Just incase.

I wore Chantelle undies. Pale blue bra and French knickers. They did cost a bit but I've worn them loads since.

They were my something blue.

What?!!! I can't possibly be a D-cup, surely?! You're right, thats definitely not a bra size I've ever even considered, ever!
A D-cup???? I can't wait to try this out now, for the first time ever I can't wait to try on bra's.... Im so hoping this is right because bra's have been the bain of my bloody life!

I just bought something slightly more expensive than usual from M&S

Seriously you need to have your dress first. Neither DDs or my strapless ball dresses need a bra, my old one did.

It totally depends on how much and where the boning comes in the bodice and how tight the dress is.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/01/2015 12:47

Not all d cups are equal - a d cup in a 30 band will have roughly the same volume as a b cup in a 34 band, but the shape will be different and the band will give better support. Ever find the back of your band is riding up, or the straps falling over your shoulders...

I have the dress, its just not been altered to fit just yet. But the shop assistant said to get my underwear before alteration measurements are taken so the alterations take into account to bra, so as not to be too tight if I go for a padded - which I always do. Not to appear bigger, but I prefer the support of a padded bra, it feels more secure. And rather embarrassingly my nipples are always, ya know, hard Blush so they always 'show' through my tops. Padded bra's disguise this obscene show, and in the process stop people staring!

The Wonderbra is good for that, it's got quite solid moulded cups so I don't think your nipples would appear (let's face it, nobody wants visible nipples in their wedding dress!)

Other strapless bras which I've heard good things about are the Ultimo, the curvy kate luxe and the strapless freya deco.

Y0rkshirePudding · 10/01/2015 13:09

Yes statistically, not so much the band at the back riding up, but the shoulder straps regularly fall down.

Im thrilled by this new bra sizing revelation - I just always thought cup size literally was: A is the smallest and the further up the alphabet the bigger the boobage.

I regularly stood in shops saying to my OH "how the frig is this shop working their bra sizes out, that B cup is clearly bigger than that C cup! Humph, morons... lets leave!"

But now it all makes sense

this image shows it well - a 30D up to a 38D

Shoulder straps falling down is a surefire sign the band is too big, it's because the straps are attached too far out

Y0rkshirePudding · 10/01/2015 14:18

OMG they are different aren't they - Im 32 yrs old and have been doing wrong all these years! This is awesome, all women need to know this!!!! Because the countless women I've spoken to about the same bra issues means they've all been doing it wrong too.

Im so glad I posted on here now before starting my agonising bridal underwear search... Im hoping it won't be quite so foul-mood-inducing as what it usually is

...and the good news for your dress is that if you have been wearing wider flatter cups than you need (which you have) you've been flattening out your boobs; wearing a smaller back with smaller but more sticky out cups (not well explained but you know what I mean) will give you a more pronounced cleavage for your fitting.
Once you're properly fitted do practice wearing the bra before the day. I had been wearing a bigger back size 'for comfort' for years and when I was fitted for my bridal bra I wasn't used to the feel of the band around my ribs and it did feel weird. You do get used to it though.

StatisticallyChallenged · 10/01/2015 15:51

Definitely, good advice momb. OH, and don't buy bras in M&S generally as their sizing is all over the shop!

Y0rkshirePudding · 10/01/2015 16:22

Yeah i tried some M&S bra's on a few months ago, about 3 styles in various different sizes as usual, and they were absolutely horrendous. I was either rattling around in them or i was squeezed so tight I thought my boobs would burst! But I was looking at the all the wrong sizes, as I've now discovered(!), so it could just be me...

And Im so excited that my new size will help make me look less flat! Wonderbra, here I come!!!
