Do you take your boots off in work?

Met my Mother on Fri for coffee.

She met me at the office and was shocked that I take my boots off and work in tights feet. I've never really thought about this or bothered with shoes to change into.

I do, but then I'm the boss & there's only one other staff member in the office full time & we've know each other since our schooldays. If I need to go downstairs or walk about I put my boots/shoes back on though.

No and have never known anyone to do it either, very unprofessional.

UterusUterusGhali · 06/01/2015 08:36

I worked in an office recently where everyone put on Big Fluffy Socks as soon as they got in.
It was a very small office and there weren't many visitors, if any.

I found it baffling at first, and didn't look quite right, but it was sort of cute. (They were all lovely.)

I would rather just wear comfy shoes from the get-go. Confused

In summer I go as far as the printer in bare feet, but its too cold to do it right now. Some of us that do or have had to work in a processing darkroom, which is very hot and stuffy, have admitted to stripping tops off when working alone (men, and women to bras) in there in the summer.

LennyCrabsticks · 06/01/2015 08:48

We all do in my office. It's very casual though.

clareyh12 · 06/01/2015 11:46

I don't see why it's un-professional.

I love my heels but they are too high for the office so I'm always in my stockinged feet.

I also do some part-time modelling work and it is better for posture

It's unprofessional because it assumes a massive level of informality - you get dressed to go to work, which requires a level of formality according to your workplace. Padding about in your socks or even worse - bare feet - is what you do at home at the end of the day once work (and the work minset) is finished.

SirChenjin · 06/01/2015 12:14

mindset

bluesbaby · 06/01/2015 15:31

That's a bit weird, walking around in socks in the office. I would (and have) changed shoes when at work when commuting by foot - because I also think sitting with outdoors (hiking/walking muddy boots or trainers) is also inappropriate in most places.

I remember working in one warehouse office which was freezing in the winter (obviously), and in the end, I didn't change footwear, I kept my trainers on (I was commuting by motorbike) and jumper, and motorcycle jacket, it was so cold! The others wore 2+ jumpers and had blankets, scarves and hats on sometimes...

EBearhug · 06/01/2015 15:43

I rarely have my shoes on under my desk, and I'll walk to the printer in bare feet. I have them on for any further distance.

ejayne · 08/01/2015 10:02

I'm not sure why this is an issue.

I work as a receptionist for a solicitors. When I wear knee-length boots I take them off as soon as I arrive and just go stocking footed.

Pumpkinette · 08/01/2015 22:38

Most professional offices have a dress code. If the dress code states smart shoes (no flip flops, trainers or open toes sandals) then I think no shoes fall into the no no category.

If you work in a very casual office then maybe it would be acceptable but it's still a bit unprofessional.

Why not get some smart looking loafer style slippers? You could pass them off as shoes and still be comfortable.

PowderMum · 08/01/2015 22:59

It's unprofessional to not wear shoes. At my previous place dress code was very lax and so was the professionalism. Flip flops etc were worn, plus 1 lady always wore slippers.
In my new role in a professional environment (offices) and a working environment (factory) there are dress codes and no shoes would be a disciplinary issue. I wear boots that are smart but comfortable as we have yo cover a large distance to cross the factory site and keep a smart pair of heels under my desk for when needed.
If I visited your offices I would judge you -- sorry

Neverknowingly · 09/01/2015 00:21

Quite a few of us will slip our shoes off to pad to the copier etc if working after hours. Definitely not though during 9-6 when the office is busy and clients might pass through.

VenusRising · 09/01/2015 00:35

We allow people wear whatever they feel comfortable in. Creative business.

I often wear bare feet and flip flops, some wear socks, boots and some wear shoes.
I don't wear fluffy socks or slippers, but I'm all in favour of inside shoes and outside shoes.

There are different industry/ professional sectors norms where suits etc are worn, and I suppose formal shoes include that uniform.

Some people think wearing shoes all day long is healthy. I think it's very bad for your feet. I couldn't imagine how horrible it is to have to dress a certain way and wear shoes all day long, or feel that you couldn't be yourself in your job.

looki · 09/01/2015 01:14

When I was pregnant, I often slipped over to the photocopier whilst leaving my shoes under my desk. Otherwise no and I think it looks awful. If I wear long boots commuting to work in bad weather etc, I change into heels. I always keep a few pairs of shoes under my desk for this reason.

A male colleague often took his shoes off while working. It looked very very strange. He always wore red socks so it was impossible not to notice.

VictorineMeurent · 09/01/2015 13:48

I do - but I'm the boss and sit in my own office alone all day.
