Perioral dermatitis hell!

Does anyone have any experience or advice?

Having done battle with my skin for months I finally cracked and went to the GP today having developed a very sore dry patch of skin around my nose.

I have been diagnosed with Perioral dermatitis, most common in young women apparently, small consolation that at 34 I have a young woman problem!

I have been put on antibiotics and can expect to be on them for at least 4 months apparently.

I am struggling to know what products to use to cleanse (tone?) and moisturise, what about make up? Going without is not an option for 4 months +. I've not been advised to stop using anything just to keep it light.

Suggestions, anyone?

Try the Green People for good shower gels etc without SLS.

Grumble get a big tub of castile soap. You can use it for face wash and shower gel. I use the Dr Bronners one (can get it off amazon and also Holland and Barrett). The almond one is lovely!

Oops, my mistake! It wasn't the Lymecycline, it was the anti-biotic cream that stopped me from drinking. My skin burned if I even had a sip of alcohol!

I have perioral dermatitis and I find the MooGoo range are quite good with it. They have a cream specifically for dermatitis, eczema etc and I find that help. I also use Lush products because they are really gentle on the skin.

Hi @grumblegums,

Are you still around? I was just wondering if your Perioral Dermatitis cleared up and if you were able to stay symptom free? I’m suffering from this at the moment. Xx

Hi @RD15 - must be the time of the year - I’ve had a flare up since it’s been cold! Things that have worked for me: in the past cansten with clotrimazole- kills off the fungus, and most recently (as the Cansten didn’t seem to be hitting the spot Sad) the ordinary rosehip oil. It seems to have dried out the horrible rash without making my skin itchy or inflamed. It’s cheap too so can’t hurt to try. Other than I try to use no harsh face wash or creams or even make up if I can bare not to. Lots of luck- I hate this stupid red goatee!

Hi @SmallGeezer,

Thanks for the tips. I’ve been to the GP and am currently 3 weeks in to a 12 week course of lymecycline. I’m starting to see some improvement now but it’s a slow process! I’ve never had it before and presume my outbreak is hormonal in nature as I developed it during my 3rd trimester of pregnancy and it got worse after delivery!

I’m really hoping this means once I’ve treated it, it won’t come back! As there will definitely be no more babies! Xx
