In my 50s and wanting ideas about 'distractions'

I'm in my 50s and want some ideas for distractions. By this I mean things that distract the eye away from the wrinkles etc like scarves, big earrings etc. Ideas please, wise ones.

The shape of the specs in that link is definitely more current. My teen has some very similar. I am glad peripheral vision is back in fashion.

I wasn't really thinking of George Jenson when I said scandinavian design, they are overpriced and frilly imo.

I suppose I was thinking more along the lines of clear lines, unfussy, simple shapes, maybe textured or smooth or polished but not stone set.

search ETSY for silver earrings, use key words like stud or drop etc to narrow down the search - the prices are amazing.

Floisme · 27/12/2014 16:42

I hated wearing glasses when I was young because I thought my specs were the main thing people saw when they looked at me. Now I love them for the same reason Grin

My Auntie is in her 80s and always looks completely fabulous. She wears well-cut, classic clothes in neutrals (not black), minimal make-up with a little bit of understated shimmer, modern jewellery which is sparkly because it is real (and therefore expensive) but not massive or baubley at all. She looks super glamorous, in a retired bond girl sort of way!

ElizabethHoover · 27/12/2014 23:17

you need to look at the dress like an architect thread - all Cos weird stuff

their jewellery is nice though

Dancinglaughingdrinkingloving · 27/12/2014 23:37

Yes yes yes to 'retired bond girl' - that's how I want to look!

GeorginaWorsley · 28/12/2014 09:31

Oh yes retired Bond girl sounds fab.Grin

Bonsoir · 28/12/2014 10:46

GrinGrin at "retired Bond girl". What an excellent image!

glinda · 28/12/2014 11:41

For the record, the new bond girl, Monica Belluci is 50! There is hope yet!

Ohmygrood · 28/12/2014 11:58

What a great thread. I'm not 50 yet, but I'm heading very quickly in that direction. Most of the women who I work with are in that age group.

My two most stylish colleagues have very different styles.
One is always very classy and smart - tailored trousers and silk shirts with heels. She always looks fabulous.

The other wears scarves, but they complement her outfits rather than distract. She wears dresses, boots and opaques a lot.

They both look fab, but I don't. I need to get a sharper haircut I think.

I recommend India Knight's book "In her prime" and Sali Hughes' "Pretty Honest" . Great beauty and outfit tips, plus loads of sense.

ElizabethHoover · 28/12/2014 13:41

oh i think retired bond girl is a bit Gin and Jag

ChippyMinton · 28/12/2014 14:58

Flattering haircut and footwear are key.

AsBrightAsAJewel · 28/12/2014 15:16

Haircut (restyling) already booked for next week Chippy. But footwear is harder. Isn't it typical that as we age and need more help to look glamorous our bodies are more likely to let us down! I need footwear that supports and can fit orthotic supports in. Sad

Had to google what "gin and jag" meant ElizabethHoover but it does sum it up pretty well. I'd love to look as good as Honor Blackman!

meltedmonterayjack · 28/12/2014 16:43

I'm mid 50's and have recently had my hair cut short from a mid-length bob. I have never had so many compliments on my hair ever! My boyfriend said it was the best haircut I've ever had and literally everyone who knows me, comments. I avoided doing it as I thought it would say 'old' but it's just the opposite.

Make up is really important. I've recently started using Clarins Beauty Flash Balm as well as a matte bronzer and have a subtle glow now which is a big improvement from the washed out look I was starting to get.

I still wear what I've worn for the last 7 or so years - skinny jeans, boots, t shirts, jumpers, parka. I've lost weight (gym and walking) and think they still look ok. I've been very aware of what not to buy that I used to buy on the basis it wouldn't be too becoming now - Anything with writing on it, pictures on it, anything frilly, flouncy, ethnic. I like well cut dark jeans, white t shirts, tan boots and chunky but simple jewellery. I've actually stopped wearing scarves (apart from winter outdoor ones) as they seem to highlight my slightly saggier jawline. With the new haircut, I don't feel I 'need' a scarf now.

Resist Per Una, animal prints, big earrings and statement jewellery is my advice and concentrate on hair, make-up, specs and clothes that suit your shape but that aren't fussy.

ElizabethHoover · 28/12/2014 16:46

i think you might be right about animal prints as i am mid 40s
might keep only to subtle heels

blueshoes · 29/12/2014 17:13

Pagwatch: "Get stuff you love altered."

Totally agree with this. Although it adds to the cost, the better the fit, the more you wear it and the more the cost per wear goes down plus you also look good whilst wearing it.

However, I stick to clothes than can be altered without too much complications, such as just the hem. Not major jobs involving cuffs, waistbands or shoulders or lining. For example, I am very petite and if the jeans fit well at the hips and waist, I just take the length up and viola, perfect jeans.

sharp smart or sharp modern haircuts are very ageing imo. Short may look neat but it just shoults out "over 50" and labels you. Cos is a good brand for anyone concerned baout how they look because it is quite ageless. If you get your makeup right you can have a wider variety of haristyles to chose from. Long is not necessarily ageing.
