Yes or no? Winter wedding. Dress is cobalt blue.

If the bride has asked for a colour to be avoided, I probably wouldn't wear it (even though I think such a request, besides traditional bridal/mourning colours is a bit tacky).

Otherwise the key question is whether the style of the dress means you'd be mistaken for a bridesmaid.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/12/2014 16:22

I wouldn't wear it

perplexedpirate · 21/12/2014 16:25

No, I wouldn't.
I didn't wear white when I got married and someone turned up in a dress of the same colour (they knew it was the same).
I was a little miffed, they wouldn't have worn white, after all.

dingit · 21/12/2014 16:28

I don't think it's similar. Bridesmaids dresses are long. Mine is short lace. I think I might feel a bit like Miss Haversham Blush
Back to the drawing board then Smile

One of my friends (not a bridesmaid) had seen my bridesmaids dresses and still came in a dress of similar colour/style. She commented to everyone who'd listen how much she looked like a bridesmaid! Was really miffed at the time. If you know what bms are wearing I would avoid!

There is an old tradition of the Mother of the Bride matching her dress to the bridesmaids colour but at the end of the day its up to the Bride how matchy matchy she wants it or not as the case may be.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/12/2014 19:26

I'd probably not, even if the style was different, unless there was some way to make it look a little less 'matchy'. Jewelry, shawl/shrug, tights, shoes?

specialsubject · 21/12/2014 19:36

while no intelligent adult would actually be bothered about someone wearing the same dress (unless you aren't the bride and turn up in a big white frock) it is probably politer to avoid the exact bridesmaid colour.

so blue is fine, but not the same blue.

"There is an old tradition of the Mother of the Bride matching her dress to the bridesmaids colour"

It can't be that old a tradition. Because it was certainly unheard of in the 90s and I doubt it's ever been generally accepted.

Enlli · 21/12/2014 21:40

Well Dirty I got married before the nineties and it was something that was talked about well before then. I ignored it for my wedding but the brides mother usually gets to choose her colour first and then the grooms mother chooses. Sometimes there is a colour theme the bride chooses and the bridal party follow this. I think that it all depends upon what the bride wants at the end of the day.

Trills · 21/12/2014 21:45

I would try not to because I wouldn't like it, not because I'd worry that that bride wouldn't like it.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/12/2014 22:37

I remember it as the MotB having a colour or print that coordinated with the bridesmaids rather than the exact same colour. Then the MotG chose a colour that coordinated or at least didn't clash with the MotB.

Luckily, my son eloped so I avoided that whole thing. LOL

VenusRising · 21/12/2014 22:56

If you accessorise it with shoes, shawl, belt, gloves, hat, bag in hot yellow, black, or pink, or something matchy I'm sure you won't se seen as a wannabe bridesmaid.

TheBuskersDog · 21/12/2014 23:09

Surely most guests at a wedding have no idea what colour the bridesmaids are wearing until they get there so it must happen quite often.
