Fed up of flat hair!!

TwoNoisyBoys · 16/12/2014 15:27

Just that, really. I have below shoulder length, long layered, highlighted blonde hair. It's quite nice. Well, it's alright....but it's so FLAT at the roots ð??? I've tried volumising shampoos, conditioners, sprays, mousses, and the BBH. Nothing seems to work apart from back-combing at the roots, which I don't like doing everyday. Any great product/styling recommendations that I'm not going to be able to live without.....? Please?!

I would say try the opposite. Use a clarifying shampoo on your hair once a week. It is probably weighed down with product residue and lime scale deposits from water. If ever I want a lift on my roots I use a babyliss gadget that crinkles the hair. It's specifically made to add root lift . I'll see if I can find a link.

I got it for under a tenner at Wilkinsons a while back Smile

TwoNoisyBoys · 16/12/2014 15:42

Ooh, that looks interesting......thank you!
Just to clarify, I don't use products everyday....it's when I'm going out and what a bit of va va voom Grin but nothing seems to work!

stuff [[http://www.boots.com/en/Schwarzkopf-got2b-Powder'ful-Volumizing-Styling-Powder-10g_1180326/?cm_mmc=pla--google--PLAs-_-Boots+Shopping+-+Category+-+Beauty]] I saw it recommended on here and it really works for my fine flat hair – although mine is short, but I think you can use it on longer hair too. Warning – you only need a TINY bit! It spookily adds volume but if you use too much it goes all sticky.

FollowTheStarship · 16/12/2014 17:43

Nope

I'll try again.

different shop

IhadsexwithanelfinIceland · 16/12/2014 17:45

I am unreasonably excited to share this!! I don't have one but I found it when looking for a crimper for my daughter, reviews are good.

OttiliaVonBCup · 16/12/2014 17:46

Looks just like the Aveda powder for a fraction of the price.
I think I'll give it a try too.

IhadsexwithanelfinIceland · 16/12/2014 17:46

Or even irrationally excited.

IhadsexwithanelfinIceland · 16/12/2014 17:49

bigbuttons beat me to it in the second post, such a div.

LexieSinclair · 16/12/2014 17:51

I have hair like yours and I use no products except for plenty of dry shampoo which gives it loads of oomph.

mowglik · 16/12/2014 18:14

I have a stash of volumising products and I kept buying and buying and buying cos nothing worked well enough but I haven't bought any new products for a year now as I now use mark hill dirty little stop out dry shampoo all over after washing my hair and it really gives hair a bit of oomph but not too much..for going out days I also use Philip Kingsley volumising mousse (cnt remember actual name) and that really works too but is ££. The mark hill is my staple and that's after trying salt sprays, mousses, that crimping heated tool for fuller hair, volumising powders etc. I recommend you pick up a can and try it out you won't be disappointed!

mowglik · 16/12/2014 18:16

The root boost crimper linked abover is the one I have - it gives you huuuge hair but you can see the crimped roots and its a bit too much (for me) for everyday

randomAXEofkindness · 16/12/2014 19:14

Shampoo. Only condition the very ends. Rinse really well. Towel dry. Distribute mousse properly: section hair, spray onto a wide tooth comb, comb through evenly from the roots, be generous. Section off small sections neatly and dry with a hot air brush or round brush and hairdryer. Make sure that the roots are being lifted and angled upwards. Don't keep moving the brush. Be patient and hold it still. When the section is bone dry, switch to cool to set the volume, or put it immediately in a big roller. Don't take the brush/big roller away until the section is completely cool.

If you don't apply the mousse evenly, it won't last. If your sections are too big, you'll get some hair too hot/damaged, and some still damp/limp. If it isn't bone dry it'll fall. If it isn't cool, it'll fall. If the brush isn't at the right angle, you'll get crap lift in the first place. You can buy all kinds of stuff, but it's your technique that will count the most.

bigbuttons · 16/12/2014 21:17

blimely random, that's alot of work! I think I'll stick with the root crimper.
btw I have never found the crimped hair to show through, you have to do it on the under layers, leave the top one and you're good to go.

TwoNoisyBoys · 16/12/2014 22:06

Thank you so much everyone.....have only just had a chance to catch up on all the messages so am going to have a good read now!

Right, I'm going to get the volumising powder and the Mark Hill dry shampoo....I'm interested in the roots crimper thing but a bit worried about having crimped roots on show!

And yes, my blow drying technique definitely needs working on! The problem is TIME......or a distinct lack of it! ??

OP posts:
bigbuttons · 16/12/2014 22:17

They won't show if it's on the underside. The crimp last ages as well!

TwoNoisyBoys · 16/12/2014 22:48

Hmmm.......tempted. And it's quite a good price......(oh dear, I can see what's going to happen here!!!) Grin

I have hair to my waist which is very straight. The babyliss crimper is the only thing that gives me big hair but still looks natural. You need to practice to make sure you don't crimp any hair that's on show. Highly recommend it!

Cric · 16/12/2014 23:14

I put half my hair up and back comb the under bits.... Then put the straight layers over the top!

TwoNoisyBoys · 16/12/2014 23:17

So.....with the crimper......do you just do your top section, and leave the line along your parting straight to cover the crimped sections?

OP posts:
CanISayOfHerFace · 16/12/2014 23:45

I do two sections down each side of my head, either side of my centre parting (so four sections in total) being careful not to crimp too close to the hair on top. I don't do any at the back. I leave at least an inch of hair between crimping and parting.

Truckingalong · 17/12/2014 07:22

You just need this dry shampoo. It will give you the biggest hair of your life. You won't be able to get your fingers through it and it will feel like coconut matting but you'll have more root lift and volume than you can shake a stick at www.superdrug.com/Batiste/Batiste-Dry-Shampoo-XXL-Volume-200ml/p/275161

Usedtoloveme · 20/12/2014 07:17

The Babyliss Micro Crimper is on Groupon at the mo. £11.99 plus £1.99 p+p. Going to give it a try.
