Solve My Shoe Conundrum!

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 20:31

I would like to have some shoes I can wear with a skirt, in winter. The problems:

  1. I don't really wear heels. Maybe v low ones that are wide?
  1. I get planar fascitis, or something like it. I want reasonably bouncy shoes - I normally wear trainers. Ok, I only wear trainers.
  1. I wear size 9.
  1. I am butch, so anything too floaty won't work. Well, ok, there won't be anything floaty with nice thick soles.

What are my options?

Have you tried Earth Shoes, which have special low heels? They're marketed in the UK through a site called (sorry I can't do links) \link{www.lovethoseshoes.com}lovethose shoes. They're pricey, but the sandals I got this year lasted me the whole Summer, and I bought a pair of good shoes for Autumn. Some styles are like trainers but in black, and butch look would be fine, as they're mostly square-ended, comfy, flat, etc (though they seem to be popular with the USA Birkie crowd...)

knew I couldn't do links! try this!

Oh no, link doesn't work!!!!!

Blast. Never do technology.

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 20:40

Oooh, I could wear these , and they go up to 9.5! I will have a look around there. Hmm, or these ...

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 20:41

The problem with your second link was, it was missing the "http://" - you need that before the link bit.

OP posts:
controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 09/10/2006 20:46

mmmmm, the first link ones look ok. the second link ones would be yuk with a skirt imho. you definitely want something like a "proper" shoe if you want to wear with tights / skirt. nothing "cloggy". what about some comfy boots??

maggiesmama · 09/10/2006 20:48

evans - bear with me - have hired a great shoe designer and have got a great range of shoes this a/w and they are a) wide b) go up to a size 9. check em out.

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 20:53

Fair enough, re: clogs. I do need to know.

I can give Evans a try, I have bought their clothes before. My feet are relatively narrow, though.

I was tempted by something in Aldo, I think it was, they were pretty but the soles were far too thin. I walk a lot, and am often carrying DS2 these days.

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 20:57

These are probably also not ok?

I probably need to go to one of those "sensible shoes" shops in person, to try things out. I'm slightly put off by the "cures cellulite" bunk, tbh, anyway ...

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 20:58

What about these ? Cheap and (I think) quite cute and funky.

OP posts:
controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 09/10/2006 20:59

they are definitely cloggy (ie no proper back to them). evans definitely worth a look. also natural shoe store (online if you aren't near one....
boots??

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 09/10/2006 21:00

... if you want to look like a clown they are great....

Bozza · 09/10/2006 21:04

nqc they would look awful in winter. Think the first pair you linked to are the best.

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 21:04

How about these ?

I like colourful interesting shoes. But mostly buy men's shoes, so don't generally get the choice ...

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 21:05

I don't think I'll buy shoes online, but I just want a firm idea of what I'm looking for (e.g. a flat comfortable shoe which will work with skirts).

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 21:06

I'm in London, there must be bazillions of appropriate shoe stores, I'm just used to being told "no sorry, no ladies shoes for you, mad waterskiing-without-boots woman".

"Negative heel technology"?

Hey NQC, I know where you got your swanky green jacket from

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 21:15

Yeah, they're still selling the same thing, from the same stall, I saw it Sunday and was rather surprised.

I'm not sure about "negative heel technology", but I have been forbidden by the physio from wearing thin-soled shoes.

FrannyandZooey · 09/10/2006 21:18

I considered buying one and turning up in it, to astonish you. But dp said if I did he would call the police.

controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 09/10/2006 21:19

nqc. type "thenaturalshoestore" into google. on home page of their website v nice trainer like shoe "rosmarin" by think (green one) could be nice.... you could try on in covent garden....

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 21:43

F&Z, there really isn't much debate about who is the "sensible one", between you and your DP, is there ...

That green one is lovely. I am a total sucker for suede, anyway. Hmm, but only some of their shoes are in 9 . Well, I'll have to try the actual shop, I think there are a few "sensible shoes" stores in Covent Garden, aren't there?

OP posts:
controlfreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaky2 · 09/10/2006 21:47

it is nice isnt it? good luck!

fishie · 09/10/2006 21:51

hello nqc. natural shoe store told me that all their stock shows online but branches don't have everything. so if you spot something you really like ring them first, it is prob best place for you to shop in person. i am brutal to shoes and finding something sturdy but not frumpy is really difficult.

FrannyandZooey · 09/10/2006 21:53

Hah! Snorted out loud at that one, had to explain, and dp is now quite offended

NotQuiteCockney · 09/10/2006 22:00

Oh dear, do I have to talk to him about how he'd look in a jumpsuit or something now, to cheer him up?
