Can you get hi-viz winter coats (for children)?

DD(7) walks to school, and she wears a high viz vest over her winter coat - under duress.

She doesn't like it because nobody else wears one, and it takes her longer to get changed because she is taking off two things, and it falls of her peg bacause it hasn't a hook and .

So I was thinking it would be be great if I could get her a fluorescent yellow or orange winter coat with big reflective stripes- sort of like the people that mend the railways wear.

She likes yellow and orange, so I think she would be happy to wear it - it's the fact that the vest makes her different rather than the colour of it that she doesn't like.

I have actually seen some fluorecent yellow down jacket type things, but DD needs a fully waterproof warm coat for the walk to school, not just showerproof, and also they don't have reflective strips (another thing I am totally anal about).

Has anyone ever seen anything?

Or failing that, a really, really bright winter coat, with reflective piping?

(I would quite like a high viz hat for her as well...)

I once had a thread on aibu about the lack of safe coats for children in high street shops.
oh my, I needed a week in a darkened room to recover from that :o

Proviz 360 is an amazing fabric, really waterproof and highly reflective but not cheap. this kids jacket is £60. I got mine for half that from Start Cycles but they don't seem to stock the kids version. They do a kids size rucksack for £30. It's amazing stuff, I light up like a Christmas tree under streetlights or in car headlights, impossible to miss!

Ha ha, MausMaus, I can imagine Grin.

vindscreenviper that fabric does look amazing.

All equestrian places do hi viz children's clothing my children wear them for riding and no I am not mean

specialsubject · 04/12/2014 18:42

what is cruel is to have them knocked into eternity by a car, bike, horse etc because they can't be seen.

put the hi-viz on.

It was Someone flogging their hi viz coat website

Samantha28 · 05/12/2014 19:32

Caroline, ignore the " you are so mean " posters. Soem people on mumsnet can't grasp that we don't all live on their street in trendy inner city London and therefore must make fashion our top priority at all times Hmm

I wear hi vis for running ( even though orange and yellow are not my best colours ! ) and my kids wear it for cycling ( gilets over their jackets or t shirts ) And I don't think they are too traumatised .

Thanks for pro viz 360 link, viper. Am considering one of their tabard type tops for running. Once I've had it approved by the fashion police of course

AdventCaroline · 05/12/2014 19:46

Thanks Samantha, I'm more bemused by the idea of it being mean than anything else.

I suppose a while back bike helmets and car seats were "mean" too.

I did actually managed to velcro DD's high viz to her jacket today - thanks to the poster who suggested that! - and there were four other children in the schoolyard wearing them too today, so she was much happier Smile.

My kids have the orangey yellow Didriksons one with reflective strips. They are BRILLIANT. Really visible, the reflective stuff is super high viz, and they are seriously warm and waterproof. Only tony downside is that they look grubby after a month or two so have to go in the wash every now and again, but it's a small price to pay.

Samantha28 · 06/12/2014 03:02

Ah but are they warm seasons , hopefully ? Otherwise you are cruel to make them wear hi vis Hmm Wink . It's more important to be compliant than alive, Dontcha know ?

Hopefully · 06/12/2014 09:19

Lol Samantha. As it happens I'm fairly sure they're both Springs, so they don't need to risk their lives in the name of colour accuracy Wink.

jazzandh · 06/12/2014 09:37

I just got mine some cycle/running bands with flashing led lights on. They make them very visible too...they just pop them in their bags when they get to school.

mowglik · 06/12/2014 10:00

I don't think its mean but it is a bit weird :/ maybe it's normal these days but when I was a kid growing up in inner London I never saw anything like this. Seems a bit ott but maybe I'll end up doing the same when my ds is older. A lot of things seem overkill now compared to when we were younger - I wonder if that's a good thing??
Anyway don't want to derail thread Hmm - hope you find what you're looking for op

Pelicangiraffe · 06/12/2014 11:23

As a careful driver I literally cannot see some children walking along unlit roads. If there's no pavement and no light and no reflective items are worn, it's seriously dangerous.

SunnyBaudelaire · 06/12/2014 11:27

Have a look in Sports Direct, I saw some there. I also need one for my dd16.

SunnyBaudelaire · 06/12/2014 11:29

" maybe it's normal these days but when I was a kid growing up in inner London I never saw anything like this"
LOL you would not need one in inner London would you? I am talking dark lanes with no lights and no pavements!

Pelicangiraffe · 06/12/2014 11:33

Reflective items must have saved thousands of kids lives over the years!

BoneyBackJefferson · 06/12/2014 11:35

jacket here they also do armbands and backpacks.

oliveobsessed · 06/12/2014 11:35

Yes horse riding places sell them and also aldi had some padded reflective waistcoats. DSS has one for dog walking
