Sorry to subject you to a photo of my four front teeth bombed houses. I'm very self concious of them and I'm booked for dentist teeth whitening but really I think I'm wasting money and I'll still be concious of how wonky they are does anyone have any idea how much it would be to straighten just those teeth? the rest are fine

MRs Merton, why are Fastbraces not a good idea? It's what I've got!!!

Mrsmorton · 23/11/2014 18:32

I didn't say it's a bad idea. I said if something goes wrong (like the tooth moves through the bone and gets loose or if the bite of the teeth is adversely affected by the movement) then it will be much more difficult to rectify/insure.

I had a patient I referred turned down by the orthodontist because the roots of his teeth are too short, I'm not convinced a fast braces practitioner would have the level of knowledge to notice that and to mitigate against it and if he'd had braces, he would have lost several teeth.

Just out of interest, is it at all possible to get orthodontic work done on the NHS as an adult? How bad would your teeth need to be for that? Or is it an impossibility no matter how bad they are?

PrivateBenjamin · 23/11/2014 18:43

I did QofE but that was about 10 years ago and I believe they've really tightened the rules up since then. Your dentist might recommend you if your teeth are 'bad' enough.

I've just had train tracks (but clear ones) fitted top and bottom by an orthodontist I was referred to by my nhs dentist as they (quite rightly) didn't have the expertise to deal. (Lots of gaps, overbite , years of gum issues)
I've paid £3600 for them which includes all my adjustment visits every 5 weeks, any repairs, retainers when they come off and a years worth of follow ups once removed.
Worth the money to find a good reputable orthodontist I think. Mine really took his time and expertise to find the best fit for me.

Mrsmorton · 23/11/2014 19:29

It is possible but IME it's for adults who need multidisciplinary care so surgery, implants etc to correct congenital abnormalities/ trauma/teeth affecting general health.

EggsAreAce · 23/11/2014 20:25

Mine cost £1400. That was for ceramic brackets top teeth only (with metal wire), then when brace came off after nine months a permanent wire retainer was fixed behind top teeth and I wear a removable retainer every other night.

My teeth before treatment were similar to yours - go for it it's the best money I ever spent - worth every penny!

Update - I had my first appointment today, this was with saleswoman at the dentist with the orthodontic training

She spoke briefly about Invisalign really playing it down saying so many people don't get the results they should as they don't wear it as much as they should
She talked mainly about six month smile and if I wanted to go ahead it would be £100 for a proper consultation with the actual dentist, £1800 for the top teeth brace and £100 for the retainer

We didn't even talk about teeth whitening just acknowledged that I wanted it too but I know the going rate around here is £250

I have my appointment with the proper orthodontist tomorrow and I still haven't cancelled my original appointment with my own dentist which is later on tomorrow and is just to start the whitening process

I meant to cancel this appointment but never got around to it but I'm kind of glad now as my feeling at the minute is I just can't justify the £2k and maybe just getting my teeth whitened may be enough.

I think she was stating the obvious about Invisalign - of course it doesn't work if you don't wear them! Sounds like she was trying to sell the '6 month smile' system whatever that is!

Darquesse · 10/12/2014 20:28

Glad you asked this, my dentist has just referred me to the nhs orthodontist for braces. There is no guarantee they will do it but because my teeth are so wonky I struggle to keep then clean properly.

I have decided if they won't do it I am going to save up however long it takes to get them done!

cuphat · 10/12/2014 20:30

I have braces on the NHS (for free). One of my top front teeth stuck out quite a bit. It overlapped slightly but enough that they took out two more teeth (I had two taken out when i had retainer braces as a teenager). My dentist referred me to an orthodontist and they confirmed it was severe enough for free treatment. They wanted me to have jaw surgery too but I refused that as I had a new baby and my overbite is something that has never bothered me. As it happens, they've managed to correct it without the surgery.

Bonsoir · 10/12/2014 20:31

OP - google Damon braces.

cuphat · 10/12/2014 20:31

Oh and I was quoted £5000 by my previous dentist!

Darquesse · 11/12/2014 16:47

Oh cuphat your post has given me some hope. I have pretty much convinced myself that they wont sort out my teeth on the nhs with all the cutbacks but maybe if they did yours they will do mine.

I had a letter today asking me to ring for an appointment. I cant wait!!

Darquesse · 11/12/2014 16:48

I noticed that i only have 29 teeth too and they are crowded enough there is absolutely no way three more teeth can fit in there.

I had to have 4 teeth removed to allow enough room in mouth for straight teeth. I was treated by NHS orthodontist and I was glad as I got the treatment for free. I had initially gone expecting to pay but teeth were so bad the NHS covered the costs. If I had paid the work would have started from £3900 but I could have paid in instalments. I ended wearing mine for four years but I needed a lot of work.
I have great teeth now!

Littlepinkpear · 17/06/2015 20:55

I have a private orthodontist, currently 5 months into treatment and the difference is amazing but I look like Goofy. It's been tough being a senior manager and having people staring.

White top fixed brackets, dark wire. Bottom fix metal brackets with dark wire. It's not too noticeable and my orthodontist said that metal fixed gave best results but I wanted white so we compromised Smile He dismissed 6 month smile etc as not giving lasting results.

£1800, no charge for initial consultations. 360 head X-ray to determine tooth root length as Mrs Morton said before fitting. Cast of my teeth were taken and we spent a long time discussing the process.

Appointments every 5 weeks and rubber bands, wires replaced. Retainer will be fitted when I'm done. Hopefully by Christmas.

So glad I've done it but it's agony and the mouth ulcers are constant. I miss fizzy drinks, red wine, sweets, gum and curry. Drinking through a straw can be a pain too. I now lisp and dribble terribly in my sleep. Wish i knew more about that side but it's done now and I can't wait for the results.
