Knee length wellies that also fit wider calves

I have a pair of Dunlop wellies that are about 16 years old. But they are not very stylish and they are shorter than I want. I need a 42cm calf fit welly that comes high up the leg. Any ideas? I read that Hunters are all rubbish now. Is that true? I always wear dresses so I want a reasonably 'neat' looking boot.

Huntress wellies used to be pretty good, but I now have a pair of Jileon wellies that adjust to the width of your calf. After squashing myself into too-tight wellies for years (damned autocorrect wants to write willies!) they are so, so comfortable!

Warrenwarm · 20/11/2014 14:57

Huntress wellies are shorter though, which is exactly what I don't want. I have looked a Jileon and am impressed by the sizes they offer, but they don't give any heights, I'll have to ask them - none look as tall as a Hunter though.

Girth. That's definitely what my calves have.

acharmofgoldfinches · 20/11/2014 15:11

just measured mine for you, my Jileons are 36cm (up from the heel) which is a cm shorter than my Huntress ones - both are top of calf on me (5'8") so probably not as long as you want unfortunately.

cressetmama · 20/11/2014 15:26

Ilse Jacobson wellies have laces, so adapt to your calf-girth, and come in a much wider choice of colours than just green, blue or black.

RaisingSteam · 20/11/2014 17:37

I've been on this hunt. I couldn't bear to fork out for Aigle and am told that my old trusty Huntresses are now rubbish. I've ended up with some navy Woodlands ones from Jileon but then they just fit my 39cm calf & are 38cm tall.

It looks like on the Hunter size chart no womens wellies are higher than 38cm. If you click on "Sizing" on the Jileon pages it gives you the heights and widths, at least of the ones I looked at.

Warrenwarm · 20/11/2014 18:10

Thank you all, especially acharm for measuring Smile. I was looking at the Hunter Original Back Adjustable wellies which are 40.5cm tall - perfect, except not as they are not big enough for my fat legs.

The Ilse Jacobsons look nice but the 14inch ones are 14.5inch wide which is far too small.

I actually remeasured using the fatter leg (lovely!) and actually need a 44cm calf I'm not that big and my legs don't look that enormous.....

I have same calf size and have ilse Jacobsen and hunter back adjustable and they fit ok, only thing I would say about the Isle ones us they have no grip!
muck boot neoprene topped are also good and quite long

NCIS · 20/11/2014 19:18

I've got Muck boots as I've got larger calves. The top of them is neoprane so stretches round but also fits snuggly round the calves so looks 'neat'. They are the only wellies I've had which are comfortable and my feet are so warm.

Wolfiefan · 20/11/2014 19:20

I have Ariat wellies. Very high and fit my calves.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/11/2014 19:22

What size shoe do you take?

Warrenwarm · 20/11/2014 19:26

A wide (but not very wide) M&S/Next 8.

I have got Aigle ones now. Do you have any tack shops or countryside type stores near you? I am in Kent and not even that rural but there are loads around here. I just went in and tried some on. Yes the Aigle were expensive for me at £70 but you can pay up to £300 so comparatively not that bad. Hunters are usually 70+ and mine fell apart after one season, not buying those again.

Wolfiefan · 20/11/2014 20:40

Yes a got mine from a country supplies/riding store.

Warrenwarm · 20/11/2014 21:00

I actually went to a countryside supplier shop thing today but it was full of cheapo own brand, ugly (but no doubt great) Dunlops, Hunters I couldn't fit in and short styles with dogs all over them. I want something long and reasonably elegant looking - best wellies if you like - my Dunlops will do fine for really muddy conditions.

In your size then these might fit the bill - 42 calf/40 high. I'd order both the 7 & the 8. Their 5 was a full size bigger than my usual 5.

navy wellies

TheHappinessTrap · 21/11/2014 08:19

I'm watching this with interest. I also have 44 inch calves. Wellies are either too big in the foot or too tight in the calf. Buying men's compounds the issue by adding in a looser ankle area. I've given in and have the shorter ones. Good luck in our search Warren.

Chopstheduck · 21/11/2014 08:30

Bogs boots.

My calves are big, I'm 5'11 and muscly. They are the comftiest boots I ever had. They are neoprane like the muck boots, so nice and stretchy and really cushioned and warm too!

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 21/11/2014 10:27

these are nice www.jileon.com/new-brown-bird-design-wide-calf-wellies-jileon/

acharmofgoldfinches · 21/11/2014 10:33

those are lovely Chops! I think their plaid and black ones might be my next wellie purchase (I live somewhere really wet, so more than one pair is perfectly justified Grin!)

Not wellies but a friend recently told me about www.duoboots.com they make smart leather boots with tailor-made calf sizes, and although they aren't cheap they aren't off the scale either.

Warrenwarm · 21/11/2014 14:33

Thanks for all the suggestions, I wasn't really expecting any!

The Happiness, oh no don't say that!
The bogs boots look really smart but are only 37cm high.
Much as patterned ones are fun, I don't want any design, just plain 'smart' wellies.
The navy wellies Raising Steam linked too are good, except not for 44cm calves I fear.
I have been looking at the Wide Fit Neoprene Woodlands however which look OK - not really what I wanted but I think I've found that doesn't exist!
