Black with a bright - too '90s?

PlantsAndFlowers · 16/11/2014 02:47

Planning on wearing black pencil skirt with bright pink jumper - but once saw on Trinny and Susannah them saying that wearing black basics with a bright top was really 90s.

Now I'm not saying that T&S are my style gurus or anything like that, god forbid! But it's stuck with me and I'm wondering - am I dated without even realising?

I like that shade of pink clashed with red, turquoise or mustard. Like this.

PlantsAndFlowers · 16/11/2014 20:08

Oooh, love those colours tethersend, but the last time I tried dressing in such a variety of brights (red jacket, turquoise scarf, green skirt) I caught a sight of myself in a shop window and realised I looked proper unhinged! Blush

Just ordered bottle green, knee length A line skirt from ASOS to go with the pink jumper. Hope it looks OK with black shoes.

It's like the more clothes you buy, the more you need.

That sounds nice- have you got a link?

MargotLovedTom · 16/11/2014 20:42

I think black and navy together looks wrong.

I like the black jacket, pink skirt look - makes it a different kettle of fish when the pink is on the bottom.

Very nice Smile

PlantsAndFlowers · 16/11/2014 23:55

Yay - hope so! Am concerned that at £28 it will look cheap and nasty, but ponte is usually good, and with an underskirt may be OK.

Black Camper Mary Janes to go with it though. Hmmm.

Love Trinny and Susannah
Not brights and black

Floisme · 17/11/2014 08:20

The other thing I liked about them was that they never told women to lose weight - they were all about making the best of what you had (admittedly with a bit of humiliation thrown in). The programme I remember best was where they featured women who were going through the menopause. I was pre-menopausal myself at the time and I found it really uplifting. In fact it made me cry.

That's right, Mumsnet, I cried watching Trinny and Susannah Blush

Littlemoocow · 17/11/2014 08:32

It made me emotional too flo and i wasn't anywhere near the menopause

Whippet81 · 17/11/2014 14:15

I used to love WNTW.

I agree I'm afraid - it's like the typical black bootcut trousers with bright top and necklace so many go for in the office - it looks really dated.

I have a lot of black but I tend to stick to black/cream/navy/grey/beige type colours - I have some pink/mustard items but wear with jeans.

vitaminC · 17/11/2014 15:10

Well, I'm going to go against the grain and say I think Trinny & Susannah's advice is dated now! They were at their peak 10-15 years ago, so all the looks they recommended are now out-dated and the stuff they wrote off as old-fashioned (i.e. looks from the 90s) is all coming back in.

I'm a mature student and looking around at all the 20-year-olds in my group this morning, they're all pretty much dressed exactly how I dressed at the same age, in 1994. Including black + brights Grin

Floisme · 17/11/2014 15:25

1994 all over again... Well I'd settle for that, I was in my prime then Grin

TheCraicDealer · 17/11/2014 16:53

I came on to say what Vitamin said; they were about in the early 2000’s. Although much of their advice re. dressing for your shape / colouring will never date, plenty of stuff will. Having said that, that jumper is pretty 90’s. Think it's the v-neck and slim fit, looks like something Monica would have worn in Friends.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 17/11/2014 17:13

Black + brights really suits me - I'm pale but with dark hair and eyes and it really sets off my colouring if I wear jade or bright blue or bright red with black.

lisej · 17/11/2014 17:30

The no bright tops with black bottoms rule is the only T&S piece of advice that's ever stuck with me too. They said it, and I suddenly looked at what I was wearing to work on a daily basis and thought "Oh yeah. It DOES look crap actually". Still think it looks crap, but somehow that link someone posted to the bright pink skirt with black worn on top looks great. Maybe it's because the skirt is the statement piece rather than a black basic.

PlantsAndFlowers · 17/11/2014 18:18

Yes, the pink skirt definitely looks good.

Aaaaaaargh, someone thinks the jumper looks 90s anyway - even without the skirt.

Still, I do love the colour and it suits me. Think with a navy or green skirt will be fine.

OP posts:
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2014 18:57

The skirt looks nice, but I'm not convinced that it, plus pink jumper, plus black shoes will work, without maybe a scarf to pull the colours together. Personally I think black shoes, black skirt and pink jumper would look better.

321zerobaby · 17/11/2014 19:14

The advice T & S gave for dressing big boobs was spot on, and still is, that hasn't gone out of date.

mooth · 17/11/2014 19:43

At least they used to work with women's bodies as they are, without suggesting surgery or dental work. They showed women how to enhance their natural figures. Without wearing colour with black.

Twinklestein · 17/11/2014 19:52

I don't think it's the concept of pink + black that's the problem and I'm as close to style Nazi as you can get this side of Nuremberg. For my money: it's the colour itself that's a bit 80s - it's fuschia-ish - there are other nicer, more up to date pinks around. I also think the shape's a bit frumpy.

Tbh I think pink jumper + green skirt will look like a cross between a flowerpot and a librarian.

Doobigetta · 17/11/2014 21:59

The only colour, as opposed to neutral, that I think works with black is pale pink. That can have a classic, Chanel-type look. I think T&S were right that putting other colours and black together just looks un-thought-through.
