Mumsnet haircut on shorter hair - can it really be done??

My hair is this length, although I have more layers cut into it. It's not long enough to get it all into a pony tail at the front of my head as the layers fall out of the elastic band. Can I do the Mumsnet haircut, oh wise women, and if so, how?

I've just done it on my short hair.

Ponytail straight up but only took about 0.5" off. Slightly softer look to my 'just below chin'- length bob. I'm growing it out (after years with long hair, which I cut myself using the Ponytail technique) as I fancied a change but doesn't it cost a fortune to keep short hair?!

I'd post a photo but I'm the least photogenic person I know!
