Purple hair. Am i being ridiculous?

Saw a girl in my hairdresser having her hair dyed purple, a bit like in the pic. I thought it looked really lovely. But obviously she was about 18 and very cool. Now I'm 30 and no granny, but have a sensible job etc. Is it ridiculous to dye my hair purple??

Yes. Go for it. If you hate it, what's the worst that happens, you get hair cut, or re dyed. It's only hair.

Question for those who have gone purple before-do you need to bleach your hair first and does it last well? I assume it is like red hair dye, ie fades pretty quickly? My hair is mid brown naturally but dyed red currently and want to do a more unusual colour next time.

ROARmeow · 10/11/2014 16:29

zebra you'll need to bleach it first. The blonder it is the brighter the colours will take.

My natural colour is dark brown, I've bleached it and done have green, half pink.

I'm bit of a grungy goth though, so that's totally normal for me, despite being in my 30s.

Yeah hairdresser said it would need lightened & then dyed. I'm red just now too so don't know if that would matter for bleaching it

When my mum was in a hospice the palliative care consultant had short, spiky, leopard print hair Grin. I thought it looked great, but I guess it depends on the serious job.

I really like the purple shades that i've seen about recently. I wish they had had them when I was younger and used to bleach and dye my own hair.
I had to go to Camden specially to get the shade of blue I wanted and now you can buy loads of different shades in Boots. Envy
Is your job customer facing? If not then you should be fine. Go for it!

I've had purple hair before without bleaching but my hair is on the fair side anyway. I had to redo it every couple of weeks, perhaps it holds better after bleach? Definitely go for it, it's only hair and if you like it it will make you smile every time you see it.

My hair is red currently and Ive fancied purple hair for a while now. Im 35 and thought I was too old. Now Im not so sure.

For a while I had black hair with bright red bits in, but that only lasted a wash or two with the red, but I did really fancy keeping the black and putting in other funky colours: blue, green, pink, purple etc

mrskittyfantistico · 10/11/2014 20:07

I think that's a beautiful colour!
Has anyone tried dying over grey hair? My hair is about 50/50 dark brown and grey and, if the dye would take on the grey, I think it could work really well. Anyone have any experience of doing this?

NakedFamilyFightClub · 10/11/2014 22:07

I've got blonde hair and when I had it dyed purple the color faded over time and turned copper, so I had to keep redoing it every few weeks. It was a bit of a pain tbh. I think it would be easier with dark hair.

MmeGuillotine · 10/11/2014 22:35

I think that's actually quite a subtle and restrained look so I'd go for it.

Mind you, I WOULD say that as I'm forty and have bright blue hair (I work from home as a novelist so no one gives a toss what I look like!). I've been dying it stupid colours (mostly bright pinks) since my teens and in fact realised the other day that the only colour that my hair hasn't had is brown so yes, give it a try - you can always dye over it again if it turns out to be not your thing after all! ;)
