Sweaty armpits on clothes - is it just me?

Peanutbutterandnutellanutter · 26/10/2014 13:29

Does anyone else find that after wearing a top /dress a few times the armpits get a bit stinky and not fresh even after washing?

Not sure if this is just me but I keep having to replace clothes that are otherwise in excellent condition as I'm paranoid that I smell.

I wash clothes after every wear and don't consider myself a particularly sweaty person. I bath every day at least once so I'm not unclean.

Any tips?

Soaking in white wine vinegar before washing has just restored several of my oldest, smelliest (but nicest) tops to the land of the fragrant Smile.

I have this problem too even with cotton tops - in fact natural/unnatural fibres seem to make no difference as it appears to be hormonal with me.
Poundland does a white vinegar spray which I use 30 mins before washing - seems to work if I wash clothes pretty much straight after wearing them. I don't like spending a lot on tops for this reason -,always end up chucking them out well before they are worn out Sad

i'm in my middle 40's and it has got worse over the last couple of years'. sometimes i sweat alot and get damp patches which is really embarrassing. I think mine is hormonal.

stubbornstains, do you have any clever tricks for removing a stubborn dog related stain on a wool carpet?

I soaked the area with with a special pet cleaner thing and while it's completely removed the odour there's an unsightly ring on the carpet that refuses to budge.

stubbornstains · 26/10/2014 20:47

Oh no! You have taken my user name too literally sofacanary, and mistaken me for a stain guru! If you had seen me today, mimicking the "before" photos from the washing powder ads and bewailing the state of DS's bloody white school shirts, you would know the enormity of your mistake...Grin

Buggery bollocks, I had you down as our very own Kim/Aggie type....your username should come with a disclaimer! Grin

It came about because I used to be covered in stubborn stains you see! (photographic chemicals). I still am, but now it's paint. Smile

Only way I got round this problem was to hand wash the armpits in bio and hot water (hotter than machine temp) then chuck in the machine with my usual Ecover/unscented. THEN I would radiator dry so dried asap. Not exactly practical tho!

WottaMess · 27/10/2014 07:05

I agree it's hormonal. Happens round ovulation for me for about a week. Suddenly I seem to swear napalm. Nice Grin. White vinegar soak to the armpits then wash at normal temp in bio with an extra rinse works here. Took years to work out though. Hmm

FairyPenguin · 27/10/2014 07:14

Yep happens to me with cotton tops as well. I have to use non- bio due to eczema but will try the oxi-action tip.

mausmaus · 27/10/2014 07:25

napisa fades clothes
dh's stinky sports clothes get a little desinfectant liquid (they have laundry instructions on the bottle) in the softener compartment.

other things you can try:

  • spraying the pits with a 50/50 solution white vinegar/water before washing.
  • soaking the garments in cold water/bio powder before washing

have you done a maintenance aash on your mashine? in case it's the mashine that's smelly.

Peanutbutterandnutellanutter · 28/10/2014 12:42

I have picked up some Zoflora.
How do I use it? Neat or diluted? In the machine or soak clothes beforehand?

YY to bio not non-bio. I ruined lots of clothes when DD was a baby and couldn't understand why. It was because I was washing everything in the house with Fairy non-bio which was crap at getting stains out. But with bio I think you need to keep to around 40 degrees - I read somewhere on here that really high temps stop them working.

BanoffeeSplitz · 29/10/2014 13:58

Have also had this occasionally- even with cotton tops (specifically a couple t-shirts with narrow sleeves ie cut close to armpit).

My tip is an occasional wash of the offending areas* with anti-bacterial hand wash. Just hot water & rub well in before sticking the items in your usual wash. I expect vinegar & Milton's work on the same principle.

I actually discovered this one day at work - didn't notice till I got to the office in desperation whipped my t-shirt off & washed the armpit area in Carex before drying under the hand drier. Worked a treat.

*keep thinking this whole post reads as if I am suggesting to scrub your actual armpits out with Carex - I'm not! Don't s'pose it would do any harm, mind, but it wouldn't fix the shirts.

Hello all. I get this in lots of tops but never in pure wool.
I've got work tops from icebreaker (can be formal under jacket, or casual without) that I wear on days when I know I will be running around or under stress and these always wash perfectly.
Another trick is to buy sleeveless tops and pair with light wool cardigan.
Off topic but a solution that worked for me.
