Please tell me how to wear jeggings!

Hi

I live in jeans and t shirts/long sleeved stretchy tops, fleece jumpers, hoodies etc and have been wondering about trying jeggings, but I don't know what the etiquette is about wearing them - do you need to wear tops that cover your bottom like is I think generally required for normal leggings or are normal tops ok?

If it helps, I'm 31 and a fairly short size 8, and am slowly weaning myself off baggy clothes to ones that show my shape a bit more - not sure if jeggings are a step too far anyway!

Thanks

I think it depends on the style, if they're thicker material with back pockets short tops might be okay. I don't really like jeggings though, I would stick to normal skinny jeans.

What about trying casual dresses with leggings and ankle boots? Or a blazer instead of a hoodie with your jeans?

JubJubBirds · 25/10/2014 12:48

Thick enough leggings you can just wear as normal jeans. But tbh good skinny jeans are much better IMO.

'fleece jumpers'
If you're weaning yourself off of baggy clothes as you've said then definitely bin these. Build up layers on your top half instead.

I'm a size 8 (or I am when I'm not a pregnant whale) and love M and S 5 pocket jeggings. Although they're called jeggings, they're more like jeans really but properly skinny ones. I think if you're slim it's fine to wear them with a normal top - I wear them with shirts, boxy jumpers, t shirts or whatever. I have them in indigo denim and in slate grey.

TwoLittleTerrors · 25/10/2014 13:17

I'm 40 and size 8. I wear thick leggings (ie jeggings and treggings) like normal jeans. I find them really good as pregnancy and postnatal wear Smile Much easier to fit than jeans. I'm living in them now with a 6wk baby. And I'm not a tunic/dress over legging person.

TwoLittleTerrors · 25/10/2014 13:21

I get mine from topshop btw. Not all of them have back pockets but they are definitely fine with short top. I will try to find a link.

TwoLittleTerrors · 25/10/2014 13:23

topshop leggings

You can see the models don't wear them with baggy long clothes.

Thanks, really grateful for your replied. It looks like I need either skinny jeans or thick jeggings then.

I like the idea if dresses and leggings - have as couple of them - but they're such a departure from what I normally wear that i save them for special occasions.

I should perhaps add that I'm virtually housebound with ME so am looking for warm comfortable clothes that look ok to make me feel a bit better about myself - my mum helped me out with a couple of new pairs of jeans and tops when I stayed with them last month (my old jeans were falling apart) and it made a real difference to my mood and self esteem. As I've got physically better I've progressed from pyjamas and unbrushed hair to whatever I could put on that was clean to trying to look a bit tidier because, while I've never been into clothes or fashion or anything, it does cheer me up.
That's also why I'm not looking for a compete change of wardrobe, but slowly nudging up the quality/appearance of what I do have, because I've not worked for a couple of years and won't be able to for some time yet, so financially I need to get things that work with what I already have really.

In that case I really recommend leggings. They are much more comfortable than jeans I found. I can wear them as loungewear. With jeans I want to change out of them as soon as I get home.

JubJubBirds · 25/10/2014 15:46

germphobia I had the exact clothes issue as you as I also have a chronic illness. I find leggings&dress combo the best thing to wear by far: comfy enough to rest in but you can still answer the door or go to the shops without feeling like a slob.

Clackety · 25/10/2014 15:54

I switched to M&S jeggings - the ones with back pockets like thin jeans because I was wearing tracksuit bottoms or leggings around the house and felt like a slob. They seriously improved my self esteem. I feel 'dressed' even when I'm home all day on my own.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/10/2014 15:58

I wear the M&S ones, which are just skinny jeans. I wear them with normal tops and am a size 10-12, so as an 8, you really won't need a bum-covering top with them.

germphobia · 25/10/2014 16:05

Thanks, I'm really glad I posted this. Yes, it is the thing of not wanting to feel/look like a slob because I'm on my own in the house 99% of the time, but being comfy to rest and warm enough because my circulation is appalling at the moment. I need to think more about the dress and leggings idea I think. I have the m&s 20% off discount code so could have a hunt online and see if they've anything nice.

I have two pairs of jeggings from Fat Face with back pockets. They're just like really really comfortable skinny jeans really, so I wear them as I would jeans. I'm a size 10, don't wear long tops or anything. Usually slightly relaxed fit tops for balance, but not long ones.

germphobia · 25/10/2014 17:03

How's about this? Simple, but not too expensive, says it's warm, and should go with the leggings I already have...
