Do I really need a night cream?

I've finally got myself into a decent skin care routine, using various bit and pieces I've picked up over the years. My skin looks really good and the dryness is gone, and weirdly there seems to be a knock-on effect for my scalp psoriasis.

But. I reckon at this rate of use I have maybe 3 weeks left of my night cream. I'm using a Nivea one, so not majorly expensive, but a big heavy glass tub.

I'm reluctant to replace it because we're emigrating at the end of the year and I'm trying to streamline everything --or at least only get tiny sizes of everything so I don't have to lug massive toiletry bags around.

So. Do I really need a night cream. Will one of my many moisturisers with SPF be a bad thing to use.

Or is there one miracle cream I can use to get rid of half my bottles and tubes for the duration of my epic trip (around NZ, then to Japan, then home - but at least another 6 weeks without all my stuff)

I wouldn't use a moisturiser with an app in at night time.
I've just started using a facial oil at night which really seems to work. You could try getting some testers as a little goes a long way.
I've been using the balance me radiance one and there seems to be loads of small bottles on eBay that seems to have some from beauty boxes. Might be worth looking at?

Spf not app

Ifyoubuildit · 25/10/2014 08:20

Viola - what's your day time routine?

vvviola · 25/10/2014 08:33

Ifyou when I'm not running crazily late

Wash face in shower. Then toner. A Clinique repair serum. Then moisturiser with SPF. Make up if I have time and am going to work, otherwise tinted moisturiser.

If it changes things at all, my "nighttime" routine usually happens at about 7:30 when I'm putting the kids to bed.

I wouldn't wear an spf at night but I would happily use any old daytime moisturiser or an oil at night.

vvviola · 25/10/2014 09:30

I just went upstairs and had a look. All my moisturisers have an SPF the drawback of fair Irish skin in NZ, I'm paranoid about the sun

You could by a separate spf cream to put over a non spf day cream and wear the day cream at night I suppose but either way if you're paranoid about the sun you'll need two products. Can't you find something in a tube rather than a heavy glass jar?

LordEmsworth · 25/10/2014 09:38

You don't necessarily need a separate night cream - it depends on your skin - but I also wouldn't use an SPF at night.

The advantage of a night cream is you don't need to worry what it looks like/how well make up goes on over it. So you can use a much heavier, thicker cream than your day moisturiser - if your skin needs it. (Generally, I find the older I get, the more I need it...) Which is why facial oils work well over night...

Possibly, depending how moisturising your serum is, that might be enough over night?

vvviola · 25/10/2014 09:44

Clackety I have a separate SPF for my face that I forgot to mention. It goes on when I'm planning to be out properly in the sun, as opposed to in and out to shops/work etc. It's a factor 70.

I'm actually not sure how it's going to fit in with my new regime - today was the first day that the sun felt hot, so I'll probably have to figure that one out too.

I'm honestly pretty clueless about skin care, but I have good intentions - which is why I have all this stuff, and why I finally decided to just use it, even if I'm doing it "wrong" or in the wrong order.

Evening primrose oil works well overnight and is very cheap. I pop a capsule, but you can also buy bottles of it.

Clackety · 25/10/2014 09:56

Okay here's how skincare work according to me :)

Cleanse morning and night, creamy cleanser to remove make up if you wear it and a warm washcloth to remove.

Moisturiser day and night.

SPF over the top of moisturiser during the day in spring/summer if you're using it or included in your day moisturiser autumn/winter.

Serums have more goodies than moisturisers alone so you can skimp a bit on the moisturisers price wise if you're using a good serum.

Night time is all about slathering products you wouldn't be seen dead in during the day because they're gloopy and rich perhaps. if you have dry skin maybe look at an oil instead?

Hope that made sense x

Serum goes under moisturiser

MrsBertMacklin · 25/10/2014 10:06

I strongly/highly recommend Body Shop's Vitamin E night cream. I am normally quite fickle with buying skincare, but on my third pot of this, love it, love the ritual of putting it on at night about an hour before I go to bed so it doesn't just rub off onto the pillow. And it's cheap enough for me to not worry about only using it sparingly.
LOVE it.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 25/10/2014 10:28

Nivea blue pot, the old fashioned stuff. Best 'night cream' I have ever used in my life and I have tried many with varying prices! You can also get it in little pots if you need to keep things minimal Wink

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 25/10/2014 10:32

Also,if you need to streamline more for your travels, have you considered Rose Water with glycerine content as your toner AND a treatment? I've started this and the difference to my skin is fab (not as obvious when I put make up on though -boo hiss) and it has a lovely inner glow (sounds poncy LOL). Lasts forever and will prevent the need for an oil and you can use less moisturiser too as it helps seal moisture into the skin and protects it

Second Body Shop Vitamin E cream, it's fab.

I use that at night and just a sun cream as a moisturiser in the morning (one without loads of extras in) and my skin is the best it's been in years.

Baabaapinksheep · 25/10/2014 14:16

Why shouldn't you use something with spf at night?

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 25/10/2014 14:17

SPF is fab for blocking pores imo

Greengardenpixie · 25/10/2014 15:19

Tbh, i am not good with night moisturisers as a general rule. I tend to break out. The only one i used that didnt make me break out was a neutrogena moisturiser.

Greengardenpixie · 25/10/2014 15:20

The bodyshop vit E cream is ok. Its no miracle worker though. Its just a simple cream imo.
