I reckon you'd absent-mindedly bite the false nails off - I had a friend that did this. Have you tried the disgusting-tasting nail polish you can get, designed to stop nail biting and thumb-sucking?

magicpixie · 24/10/2014 15:35

no I wouldn't pick the plastic nails
too hard

tried filing them down to nothing and the nasty tasting things etc

managed to stop for a while but then stressful events led to me starting again

but used to bite as achild then stopped when I was about 20 for about 12 years

so I know I can do it

Gel nails? I do my own at home with a kit. It would be possible to still bite them if you were determined enough I suppose, but the nail feels thicker once its "gelled". My nails feel lovely and strong, even though they're not..

oh just been reading a bit about this online and what ive seen so far says gel rather than acrylic of you want to do less damage to the real nails

so gel sounds good

what ones do you buy then

I think I'd need a salon but I could look/try

If you want something you can stick on yourself, I'd recommend these. They last for a week and have enough in for two applications.

mrs wolowitz
is it expensive?
sounds great

I used false nails in order to stop biting my nails. It worked Smile.

I just used cheapies, the ones from supermarkets that you stick on yourself and cost a few pounds.

They would only last a couple of days at a time but I quite enjoyed the act of 'doing my nails' every night, or every other night. I kept my own nails filed short while wearing the falsies first of all, until the habit of biting had gone. Took about 3 weeks.

I do gel nails myself, bought the Elegant Touch UV light set but use lechat colour changing gels or gellux. Currently sporting lechat frozen colour change gel (purple when cold, blue when hot) with gellux starstruck on my ring fingers. Soak off myself with Elegant Touch Get 'Em off acetone, daily massage of solar oil and my nails have never been better. Proper soaking means no damage when removing. Elegant Touch kit was on offer at Argos for £50 for a while, not sure if it still is.

magicpixie · 24/10/2014 22:02

yeah I don't mind paying as I don't spend a lot on other stuff

im pretty sure it would helpme stop the habit

I must admit when my nails are like how they are at the moment
I find myself hiding them
