It's not due a revival, I swear. But I'm going to an 80s fancy dress party at the weekend and have now realised I've no idea how to do the hair. I'd rather not wear a wig, if possible, because they get super itchy and hot IME.

Was thinking of going to the hairdressers but I assume it's just heated rollers and a ton of hair spray, so tempted to buy the rollers and give it a go.

Does anyone have any idea how she achieve tht look?!?

I also would love to know...

My friend and I had our hair done in the hairdressers like that for a party years ago. They set it with really stinky lotion and it looked amazing I actually quite liked it Shock

I think rollers and loads of setting lotion followed by industrial quanties of hairspray. My grandmas been rocking the look since the 70s and that's how she does it. I'd try it at home although I desperately want to hear what response you get when you pop into the hairdressers with a pic of Maggie.I hope you have the all important handbag and a copy of an EU rebate treaty.

I love big hair, my hair is thick and holds style quite well...I'd like to try it while I'm not too old for it to look, well, old.

Of course - setting lotion! It's not really a DIY style it is.

Greengardenpixie · 24/10/2014 15:15

Plenty of older women have their hair done like that round here!! Basically its the hairdressers with rollers and setting lotion as someone said and go under the blow heater for a while. Just book an appointment!

ZaraW · 24/10/2014 15:44

Wasn't that style popular when the film about her was released? People were going into salons asking for the style and magazines were showing you how to do it.

noddyholder · 24/10/2014 16:13

That hairdo with red lipstick is so cool looking esp if you are youngish

Kathleenkelly · 24/10/2014 17:10

Ooh, responses! Ok so gettig it done in the hairdresser would be circa 30 quid, so I've decided to invest the money in some babylis heated ceramic rollers, buy some setting lotion and use a shed load of hair spray and hope for the best.

Would you say you put the rollers in going straight bake at the front to get the lift? I.e. No side parting, just straight back? I may regret going DIY but I have the all-important handbag, plenty of pearls and a deathly glare and at least if I look daft I'll have heated rollers at the end of it!

I love that look! Esp when it's a bit longer, say, to below chin level or shoulder. I'd love to be young enough to wear it!

Anotheronesoon · 24/10/2014 18:17

Ooh I know her hairdresser! Should ask him how it's done! Enjoy!

Floisme · 24/10/2014 19:28

Shock This is one trend I will be sitting out.

MrsLettuce · 24/10/2014 19:44

The most important thing with setting lotion is to be sure that the hair is totally dry before you take the curlers out. Any dampness and it'll not work.

The must surely be a tutorial or two on this on youtube

Floisme · 24/10/2014 19:50

I remember heated rollers coming in. Before that, you had to sleep in them.

dobby2001 · 26/10/2014 21:45

Ooh I know this!! Sad thing to blooming know, but when I was 16, I did hairdressing at our local college, ad this was the first style they taught you - mainly because lots of old ladies used to come to our free training salon methinks ! Grin

Rollers in this pattern with plenty of setting lotion - one in the front , two behind, three behind etc, in a brickwork pattern (so no lines showing when removed) do this until all top of head covered then to get waves at the back do one row horizontal left to right, then next right to left until est of head covered. Small rollers facing down in nape if required.

Once dry, brush through first with fingers and then brush through until smoothed into helmet shaped desired -spray rock hard with hairspray et voila Smile

Happy36 · 27/10/2014 21:26

Blowdry your hair upside down and apply lots of hairspray to the roots.

ouryve · 27/10/2014 21:32

I think that's more likely to achieve the Ken Dodd look, Happy :o
