Blackaholic

I think my love affair with it might be waning.

I used to wear it to the exclusion of everything else. It must be a psychological thing - feeling safe perhaps? wanting to disappear?? and obviously the slimming effect. Now I think it makes me look ill and tired. I much prefer navy or dark grey. And I'm slowly introducing more colours, though colour still scares me a bit...

Anyone else a reformed or recovering blackaholic?

Yes, I am a more or less reformed black-a-holic Smile
I started out buying some colourful accessories to go with the black stuff, and then just trying on patterns and colours I wouldn't normally have looked twice at. I found that surprising things like coral really work on me, and I am not scared of patterns any more. I do still sometimes have to physically prevent myself from buying black stuff in shops Grin but it's worth it, my wardrobe is much more interesting and I feel happier!

I am a current blackaholic (with a bit of dark grey thrown in for light relief) I try really hard to wear colour but it makes me feel really self conscious and wrong somehow.

I do have a purple handbag though.

rubyflipper · 23/10/2014 16:25

I have switched my addiction from black to grey and navy

gaggiagirl · 23/10/2014 16:29

Blackaholic here too. I feel like everyone is looking at me in colours/patterns.
I do have a navy vest and grey jumper though!

Im trying to change as I've recently discovered that blue toned reds and burgundy looks great on me. So my burgundy (new) skinnies are now being rocked.....with black. So I am a slowly recovering blackaholic.

CheeseBored · 23/10/2014 16:30

I agree Dido colour makes me uncomfortable. It does seem a bit sad to always be in black. I do think navy is much more flattering.

Mine blackaholism seems worse as I work in central London where everyone wears black. occasionally I dress in some colour at home (I own a royal blue cardigan) and feel fine till I get to Charing Cross!

Notonaschoolnight · 23/10/2014 16:32

I'm the same as ruby particularly in the day time when black is definitely not an option as it just makes me look haggard

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/10/2014 17:10

I like black and wear lots and lots of it. Very occasionally I throw in something like a yellow skirt or a bright pink top, but always with black alongside. I like it, and I think it suits me, so will go on wearing it. Am quite slim and have no desire to disappear - I just like it.

CheeseBored · 23/10/2014 17:13

For some reason I feel BAD for wearing black. Though just been nagged by my mother for looking scruffy so that may be it.

Same here. I am now a navyholic. I had a sort out the other day, everything I kept was navy, navy, black, grey or white. I need to live a little more dangerously, but just feel twatty in other colours.
Can sometimes wear turquoise in the summer. Even camel feels risquey.

fourwoodenchairs · 23/10/2014 17:53

Yes me! I wear pretty much all white and beige now! Yes really!

RockMummy · 23/10/2014 18:53

I was a real blackaholic but suddenly realised it was very ageing. Following HOC I discovered I look much better in choccie brown, camel and olive as my neutrals. Never wear it at all now and the world didn't end!

DidoTheDodo · 24/10/2014 09:58

Today I am wearing black trousers....but an ivory chiffony top thing! Brave or what?

Someone has already asked me if I am going out tonight!

imustbepatient · 24/10/2014 11:16

I used to wear lots of black but like RockMummy I had my colours done at HOC and as a summer I now wear navy or grey when I would have previously worn black, but I now wear lots of other colours as well.

I love how beautiful and coordinated my wardrobe looks when I open the door and I love wearing far more colours than I did before. Even if navy is still a fairly well represented colour...

I am at the darker end of the summer colours and hence think that I probably got away with black when I was younger. Now that I am late 30s I think it was starting to make me look more tired and grey. Wearing the right colours definitely takes years off me which my two preschoolers are determined to put straight back on

noddyholder · 24/10/2014 11:18

I wore so much black when i was younger and then suddenly at about 40 it started looking terrible on me really draining So I wore a lot more grey navy and white etc. Now I can wear it again late 40s it just looks fine now and I can't get enough of it Grin

Floisme · 24/10/2014 13:00

I ditched it in my forties - it took years but it was worth it. I'm never even tempted any more as I know it looks dreadful - it totally drains me. I wear lots of plums and dark greens nowadays. The only so-called neutrals that I think look ok on me are charcoal grey and dark brown.

foxdongle · 24/10/2014 13:07

I love black and wear it loads. love it with the other colours I wear a lot especially with grey or cream or just with more black!

DidoTheDodo · 24/10/2014 16:41

I had my colours done and was told that I did look good in black (well that's a relief) so I am presenting that as my defence.

prettywhiteguitar · 24/10/2014 17:09

I've gone back to black ! After realising I had started with cutesy florals in pregnancy and totally lost my edge.

I have a mix now but try to have black staples. You do need a little more makeup to balance it out
