Another work wear query

Hi I am asking on as it gets more traffic than the work one.

I am looking for receptionist jobs. However a lot of them ask for corporate/well presented etc etc. As hard as I might I do not have perfect hair, neat figure etc. My clothes are all I could afford - mainly Matalan/George/M&S/some Next.

Anyone who has been a receptionist - are they really looking for ex cabin crew (as some say) or if you happen to look as smart as you can is that ok? I don't want to turn up for interview (if it comes to that) and have them clutching their pearls/designer bags in horror!!

I badly need a hair cut but cannot afford even my hairdresses prices at the moment!!

I would think it would depend on what sort of receptionists job.
Our school receptionist for example has a dress code of smart casual and wears tailored trousers and a blouse or nice sweater and looks great but I could understand some multimillion pound companies with rich and important clients expecting the cabin crew look to fit their image.
For a haircut, do you have any hairdressing colleges nearby or a salon that needs models for their trainee stylists?

Lifesalemon - Thanks for your answer. I guess I know that already, but so often my finger hovers over the 'apply' button. However, even if they did employ me - I would not be happy in a place like that so why am I even thinking about it??! I do make an effort and normally wear a jacket and trousers to interview but I have to be comfy. Totally not a trolley dolly (though I could do the make up!!!).

Yes, I was thinking about a hairdressing college. My hairdress is cheap enough but it is a very very tight month for me.

If you at reception you are the face of a company so you would certainly need to look polished and professional. That would be;

Make up - not lots but enough to look polished so no need for eye shadow etc
Hair clean and brushed and neat
A tailored outfit - could only be a smart sweater and trousers but it has to be smart.

You can look pulled together on a small budget and a mess on a big one. Its more about looking professional

Tie your hair up if it needs a cut. You can be well groomed in cheap clothes. Make sure they fit you well, are clean and ironed. Understated jewellery and makeup. Decent shoes. None of those cheap ballet flats.
