1, because I'm usually bored of them by the following year. In terms of durability though, 2-3 years?

Minshu · 18/10/2014 23:04

My long military coat from Miss Selfridge is over 20 (looks it, to be fair). Only comes out on cold, dry days when not doing anything too energetic these days.

GloriousGloria · 18/10/2014 23:04

I've got one that is 10 years old and still going strong

I'm a sucker for coats and jackets though so still buy them anyway

thatsn0tmyname · 18/10/2014 23:08

Mineis8 years old but I don't wear it everyday

UniS · 18/10/2014 23:09

If I wear it at work 1 year if I'm lucky. If I only wear it for walking with out a backpack maybe 3 years.
I'm hard on coats. They get very dirty at work and then I wash them.

ElephantsNeverForgive · 18/10/2014 23:11

My lovely warm lined fleece is 16, at least, but DD2 won't let me wear it Angry

My black smart coat will last as long as the moths don't find it I don't wear it more than 4 times a year.

exexpat · 18/10/2014 23:14

I have one that is at least 20 years old (so old the style has obviously come round again - I saw something very similar in H&M last week), and a Loden coat that is at least 15 years old and will probably outlive me… But standard things from high street fashion shops would probably be less.

IlonaRN · 18/10/2014 23:22

I have a wonderful woollen one from the 50's which I had relined last year (it was a hand-me-down from a friend of my Mum). It's a beautiful classic cut that suits me, and is 100% wool, which I couldn't find on the high street when I looked last year. I wear it for going out, which isn't often, but I do love it!

I also have a Barbour coat for everyday to-ing and fro-ing to the office and around town. That was a Christmas present last year, but I would expect it to last at least 5 years.

EustaciaVye · 19/10/2014 08:37

I just bought a north face Atlantic parka and I am hoping for about 8 years.

bettykt · 19/10/2014 09:18

I bought a MaxMara coat 13 years ago and it still looks good today. It's a fairly classic style and doesn't look too dated. It's not my everyday coat though. I do the school run in a North Face Arctic Parka, which I bought last year, and I hope will last until I no longer have to do the school run - dc are in infants.

littledorrits · 19/10/2014 09:23

There is a difference between how long something lasts and how quickly you become bored with it.

It depends on how many coats you have and how much wear they get.
I have a 100% boiled wool coat from Boden which is now on its 5th season and looks as new. But I also have my 'best' coat from Jigsaw which is barely worn and this is its 3rd year.

It's really hard to put a figure on this because it depends on the quality of the coat- some bobble very easily whereas others can go on for years.
On average I'd expect 3-4 years at least from a quality wool coat.

turkeyboots · 19/10/2014 09:31

I have a Boden moleskin coat which is 9 years old now and gets worn every winter. I like to get at least 5 years from a coat regardless of where it's from.

Coffeeinapapercup · 19/10/2014 09:31

"But standard things from high street fashion shops would probably be less."

I have a Dorothy perkins coat that has done 16 years service (relined once where I stuck a heel through the lining). Still looks absolutely super.

To be fair although I wore it ever day in winter for about 9 years; it has never done hard service and probably never seen a muddy field!!!

peasandlove · 19/10/2014 10:41

depends on how much I spent on it. I have two coats I call my investment coats as they are worth a lot (Armani) and I actually expect to hand them down to my daughter one day.
then I have other cheapo ones (say 50 quid) that I would expect to last a season or two

Eastpoint · 19/10/2014 10:56

I have a couple of very good coats which will last unless moths get them. A Zara down coat lasted 3 winters of dog walking & I've replaced it with one from Geox which is slightly less stylish but lighter weight down. I think it depends how high fashion they are & how heavily they are worn. I bought a khaki parka last year from Zara & DDs adopted it after about 3 months, we're sharing it between the three of us.

SuperFlyHigh · 19/10/2014 11:37

I did type a reply but my MAC got rid of it! damn

Anyway I regret getting rid of a navy blue Barbour waxed jacket from the late 80's with a separate inside fleece lining. The green ones IIRC already had a lining this one didn't, stupid me gave it away years ago...

Also I regret not buying a turquoise shimmery vintage coat a few years ago that fitted like a glove and was gorgeous. It was just before Christmas I couldn't justify it then when my stepdad asked what I wanted for Christmas and I mentioned it he said "go and buy it then!" - it had gone! I still sob about that one LOL. mock Sad

Behoove · 19/10/2014 11:43

Ah super that's a hard lesson. Sad

SuperFlyHigh · 19/10/2014 12:56

oh oh, any idea as just seen above for keeping away moths? I don't think I have any but ideas are always useful.

peasandlove · 19/10/2014 19:46

Yes I was going to ask re moths too. Is there a modern day moth ball?

SuperFlyHigh · 19/10/2014 19:54

No idea peas but they're the devils work. I may encourage my new kitten to catch them. Grin

peasandlove · 19/10/2014 20:19

Might have to risk smelling like my Nana and buy some moth balls then

LottaMarten · 19/10/2014 20:30

I bought a jigsaw coat 7 years ago. It is still perfect. I receive so many compliments, I am dreading it becoming worn. It was reduced from £330 to £110 I think, and I think might have been my best purchase ever! It is camel. No buttons. Just below knew. Flared sleeves and a tie waist.

I wish I had bought two!
When it does look too tired, i will not hesitate to buy another camel coat, with simple fastenings, and a good collar.

Kiffykaffycoffee · 19/10/2014 22:12

i always hope they will do a couple of years, ideally 5. I find the linings tend to go first.
I have a homemade wool check overcoat from 1986 that is still going strong

magicpixie · 20/10/2014 00:08

Thanks for your reply everyone

Just I have a monsoon velvet coat that four years old that I love

But in parts the velvets kind of rubbed off leaving small bald patches
