How to get this hair colour with at home dye?

I have fallen in LOVE with Agyness Deyn's hair in the attached but alas funds don't stretch to a hairdresser colour appointment at the moment.

Does anyone have any idea which at home hair dye would produce that kind of colour? I currently have dull as dishwater medium brown hair. Big user of dyes in the past but have been letting everything fade out so that I can do something a bit more exciting.

I'd thought of lifting the colour to a very dark blonde and then putting a red (probably Perfect 10 in 8rb?) over the top for a short period of time. Anyone got any better ideas?

Can't help you, the only person I know with that colour hair was born with it Envy

Red is a nightmare colour. It fades really quickly. Can't recommend Perfect 10 myself but I've been using Olio (?) a deep reddy black. I noticed last night that my dark roots are coming through (about 1") but the colour is still a vibrant red/purpley. So I'm very impressed with its staying power, my hair is long and massive so I did use two boxes!

Scwartkopff absolutely knack my hair up like candy floss.

That's a 6.35. To my eye. Loreal is the best home dye but if you can get the professional dye (Majirel) and do it yourself it is infinitely better.

Ooh, thanks for the tip stupidhead - I just googled them and they have a gorgeous dye called Honey Copper which looks quite close to the above... actually appears to be a better match than the Perfect 10 shade (on my computer screen, at least).

Yep, I've heard some nightmare stories about getting red to work but I'm jus so sick of the light blonde - dark brown scale I've been going up and down for the past few years, I want something a bit different! Very aware that the prospect of it going horribly wrong and winding up like Beaker from the Muppets cannot be discounted...

Whenever I have used a hair dye it always comes out so much darker than the photo on the packet and with no shine whatsoever. So I just get my hair highlighted by a professional and at least it now looks healthy.

Personally I would be tracking down a mobile hairdresser who has done fab recommendations. I pay £40 for three colours put through my hair and a cut. If I went to a salon that would cost me in excess of £100.

Her hair isn't red- it's a reddy golden brown. There will be less fade with the brown in the dye and it will look more natural as well.

Agree with milminge- get some majirel off eBay and mix it up yourself. I have naturally goldy ginger hair and struggled for years with box dyes to get rid of greys before the lovely TattyDevine showed me the way forward.

I have to say though, her hair looks brown to me.

I'd try an 8.04 I think... Although it may be a bit light.

SofaCanary · 16/10/2014 11:53

That's actually pretty close to my natural colour, a drab mousey reddish nothing.

I highlight it Blush

SofaCanary · 16/10/2014 11:54

Yeah my natural shade is a 7 something or other.

Milmingebag · 16/10/2014 11:59

If you buy Majirel 6.35 ( light mahogany golden brown) and mix it with 1.5 times developer ( use 20vol cream peroxide) it will lighten your hair and set the colour such that you won't need to prelighten it.

So it's 50ml majirel with 75ml developer.

Majirel is a fantastic product. My experience is my hair feels better and the colour not too dark like you can get with shop bought dyes. Also you can just mix up exactly what you need everytime in the proportions outlined above. You just need to get gloves,a tint bowl and tint brush in addition to the above. It works out cheaper in the long run.

Guys, thank you SO much. Mumsnet is ace. Majirel and all the gubbins is purchased. If I remember I will follow up!
