Short haircuts suitable for a 10yr old girl!

Dotty342kids · 13/10/2014 13:54

My daughter is nearly 10 and is desperate for a really short hair do. It's currently shoulder length, is thick and if left to dry naturally tends to have a wave in it. It's definitely not the kind of hair that can just be left to its own devices!

She's pestered me for months for a short haircut (mine is very short, pixie crop really) so I've given in and booked an appt. My hairdresser was completely stuck for ideas as apparently it's unheard of for girls of her age to want hair that short.
My daughter also has no interest in styling her hair, I have to blow dry it in the mornings at the moment to get it looking half way presentable Grin

Does anyone have any ideas of short cuts that would suit a girl. I just don't want her looking like a boy! My only consolation at the moment is to tell myself that if it's awful, at least it'll grow out in a couple of months.

Oh, and she's had a bob before, which looked lovely, but she hated it!

Please help / advise!

Can't she just have a pixie cut too?

Dotty342kids · 13/10/2014 16:59

Well yes, but I just wonder if it'll look to boyish. It's one thing on a grown up woman with curves and the use of make up Smile, it's quite another on a little girl!

My DD had hers cropped when she was eight - it looked really cute and grew out nicely (pic in blue tshirt is about 4 months after cut)

ooh, those are great actually, thanks for all the ideas. I like them all but wonder if they're going to work given that her hair is thick with a wave..

My daughter had hers styled into a very short pixie and looked lovely. It was during Emma Watson's pixie stage. I would go for a Jean Seberg pixie with your daughter's hair, buy some matt hair putty to texturise and hit Claire's for Alice bands that look particularly nice with this cut.

I think the 'looking like a boy' thing is nothing to do with your hair length.

burnishedsilver · 14/10/2014 09:52

My hair is reasonably thick with a slight wave. There is sooooo much work involved in having it short. I had to wash it and put a lot of time into styling it every morning. When its long every third day is enough.

I think she'll find it a pain in the neck. Of course the only way to know for sure is to give it a go.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/10/2014 10:00

It'll be work with wavy hair. That said, I have bouncy curls and once had a crop (never again mind!) with a longer front. The back I left natural and textured up with some wax which looked quite cool and I straightened the front. But this is a 10 year old girl we're talking about and she shouldn't be styling like that every morning!

There are wavy crops and bobs around, if you scroll down this page there are a couple of pics of cuts she may be able to get away with, albeit on adult models obviously www.latest-hairstyles.com/trends/thick.html

She's 10. Whwt do you mean "you gave in"? It's her hair! Get her go google images of short hair cuts and choose one she likes- surely it's not really your business?

Dotty342kids · 14/10/2014 10:07

burnished I agree. I have short hair and it needs completely wetting and re-styling every morning.
She has no patience or interest in her hair and I think she (wrongly!) thinks that short hair = no maintenance or work. Despite seeing me do mine every day. She is very stubborn so may just have to bite the bullet and let her work that out for herself Grin

To be honest, I'm also slightly loathe to spend the money required on maintaining a short hair cut for her - enough of my wages goes to my hairdresser as it is!

Of course it's her business, she's a 10 year old girl and she is her mother!!! She doesn't want her daughter to have something that will end up looking bad because of what will come from that. She also won't want her daughter to have to fiddle and style her hair every day!

Most parents are happy having their kids natural and see it as part of their innocence

Dotty342kids · 14/10/2014 10:09

Hakluyt it is my business when I'm paying for it! Also, as a 10yr old you don't really have any concept of what goes into maintaining a "style" every day. But I think she may have to learn that herself, through bitter experience Grin

I think a lot of us have been there with thinking short means it's easy and care free Dotty Grin

"Most parents are happy having their kids natural and see it as part of their innocence"

Whwt on earth does that mean?

Oh, and did you notice that the OP currently blow dries her dd's hair every day.........?

Greengardenpixie · 14/10/2014 10:11

Totally agree with post. Ffs , she is her mother....of course its her business. I decide on things for my dd. She is 8. What a comment to make!

Hakluyt · 14/10/2014 10:12

I paid for my dd's haircut in the summer. Should I have had a veto on what she had done? She's 18..........

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/10/2014 10:13

Your daughter is an adult fgs. Get a grip

Hakluyt · 14/10/2014 10:19

I just think that at 10 you should be able to do exactly what you want with your hair, so long as it fits in which school rules. You shouldn't have to pester. It's your hair. It will grow back.

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 14/10/2014 10:19

"I paid for my dd's haircut in the summer. Should I have had a veto on what she had done? She's 18........."

If what she was having done was going to require frequent (e.g. every 4 weeks) recuts and she was expecting you to pay for all of those as well, then yes. I don't have my own hair cut in a style that requires frequent trims because I can't afford to pay for them; I'm not about to start doing it for the DCs (who currently have hair that manages on a professional cut two-four times a year with home trimming of fringes in between).

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/10/2014 10:21

Shouldn't have to pester? Sure, if she's paying for it herself. Oh, no wait, she's a 10 year old CHILD. Who on earth do you think is in charge and has to pay, will end up faffing with it, have to help her if it goes wrong and she gets upset or teased?

Jeez

Dotty342kids · 14/10/2014 10:25

haha, I don't blow dry her hair every day Hakluyt, only when she grudgingly lets me and I get fed up with it looking like a wild mess Smile. It's not my idea of fun, would far rather she had a style that she could easily look after and maintain herself.

Gosh, I didn't think this would become so controversial, I was only asking for ideas of hairstyles!

Look up pictures of Audrey Tautou with short hair - thick and wavy but very pretty and gamine.

I think it just needs to be cut well so she can wear it tousled and ruffled and obviously not put any sort of product in it or anything.

DahliaBloom · 14/10/2014 10:32

Audrey.
