Ripped finger nail. argh.

any idea how i can keep my finger nail on until it grow up a bit?

basically i've manage to rip the side of my nail, its broken right down to about half way down the nail, i dont want to cut/pull it off until its grown a little, as it'll expose the nail bed of my finger which is obviously very sore.

i've tried a couple of layers of nail varnish, but its not holding. Any ideas? Would it be worth glueing a false nail on for a bit?

Ouch! No great ideas other than this... If you do go the false nail route be warned- nail glue (superglue) hurts like a very hurty thing (no swearing October at our house) if it gets in the raw bit where your nail broke... Perhaps a sticking plaster for a few days to allow a little growth and some healing?
Or Wine until it no longer hurts Wink

Put a layer of nail polish on then a bit of steristrip across the break then varnish over a couple of times? Might look naff but could work

Open up a teabag, tear of a piece of the paper to cover the broken bit of nail. Paint a layer of nail glue on to the nail, press on the teabag, hold it until it is dry. Paint another layer of nail glue over the top. Cover with a couple of coats of polish. Voila !

I feel your pain. It's something I do at least once a year.

I usually deal with it by cutting a tiny piece of tape (I find cloth strapping tape of a piece of a fabric plaster works best). I stick this over the break. I would seal it with clear nail polish if I could but I'm allergic to the stuff. The fabric plasters are the most resistant to sliding off. It will need to be replaced fairly frequently, depending on how wet you routinely get your hands though this is a good opportunity to pass all dish washing chores to the less injured in the family.

Like Pollyanna, I use a single layer of tissue paper/toilet roll/tea bag stick with nail glue and then paint over with nail polish

ok, will give it a try, have a plaster protecting it right now, but it keeps coming off!

If you haven't got nail glue, then Superglue is basically the same thing.

But you need some sort of gauze on the nail first - piece of tissue, steristrip or teabag as suggested. Put it over the split, drip on glue, job done.

I did this last week, it was so painful every time it got pulled back. I cut the nail short (it was pretty long at the time) and superglued it. I then put on base coat, 2 coats of colour and a top coat. It held up for a week which made a huge difference and I've just done the same superglue / polish thing again.
