Duo boots -are they worth it?

Ok, so I have stupid calves, well stupid legs in general. Anyway, having recently gone self employed and expecting a nice inheritance shortly I am a little free to treat myself, even if I do do it before my money comes and I pay back later..

I need some new boots for the winter and I've always been tempted by duo and as I walk a lot could do with some decent bottoms on my boots, especially in wintery weather! I've spotted some BUT as I can't visit a store I have to question whether the quality is worth it?

If I had my money now it probably wouldn't bother me, but for now it would be a large purchase. So, is it justifiable?

I've a pair of Duo Brindisi I think are on their fourth winter, have been re-heeled but otherwise have worn really well and are quite presentable. I would definitely say the quality is a cut above Clarks etc.

BankWadger · 12/10/2014 22:49

My brandish lasted about 18 months. I walk everywhere. The heels wore through quickly and they didn't stand up to the wet Scottish conditions so the upper came away from the sole.

I'm now looking else where for this Winter's boots as I don't feel confident I'll get my money's worth.

BankWadger · 12/10/2014 22:50

Piss. Brandish = brindisi boots!!!

RaisingSteam · 12/10/2014 23:46

Ah well mine must have got light use, I was only wearing them at weekends. Now we have a dog that will probably be the end of them!

Wouldn't you go for Merrell boots or an outdoor brand if you were looking for a long distance/bad weather boot? I don't think Duo pretend to be anything other than a fashion brand.

Gear for Girls?

scotswoman · 12/10/2014 23:52

I have been wearing my malmos for years and they have lasted really well, only a bit of puckering around the ankles but that is because I have a very narrow leg and the ankle area is not fitted in the way the calf size is iykwim.

There's a 20% off code just now on "all tailored boots" apparently for 48hours and I received my email at 10 this morning. Code is SAVENOW14

scotswoman · 12/10/2014 23:52

Oh also meant to say I live on the W coast of Scotland where it rains a lot and they have never let in a drop of water.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 12/10/2014 23:55

I love mine, can't speak to the wear and tear aspect as I don't wear them that much, but I have tiny feet and ankles and massive calves and have to say they're the only long boots I've ever been able to zip up.

Their January sale is excellent. Could you wait till then?

Tractorandtree · 13/10/2014 00:05

I haven't had such a good experience with them, I've had two pairs in different styles where the heels broke off within a few months of light use. The first time with the first pair I sent them back and they repaired them only for it to happen again a month or so later.

The construction is pretty shoddy for the money of the pairs I had.

If you can get them in the sale/on eBay maybe give them a try but IMO not worth paying full price.

Some classic fashion boots are actually very well made. I have a pair of Acne pistols going into their fourth winter with heavy wear. Have been re-heeled. Even the cobbler remarks on what good quality they are.

TwoInTheMourning · 13/10/2014 06:19

I'm still unconvinced about them. I think their sizing is all over the place, they're overpriced and their soles very very thin. But they do have some lovely classic models.

BettyMoody · 13/10/2014 07:59

No. Styles just always a bit frumpy

BankWadger · 13/10/2014 08:29

Merrel stop at 8, I take a 9 which is why I tried Duo.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 13/10/2014 11:38

Thanks. How well do the heels and soles wear?

I'm currently looking at the Helvin and the Rocky in the duo outlet due to the grippy bottoms, which makes them a bit better for the winter walking.

I have had a couple of pairs and I have to say they aren't well made, the leather isn't great and the styling is frumpy.

There are loads of better ones out there now. Clarks did a pair that laced up the back so they were narrow on the ankle but adjusted exactly to your calf size. Sainsburys have some in for £55 which have elastic running up the back so will accommodate a large calf. I linked to similar designs on Next website yesterday that are half the money that Duo charge. They have that elasticated band running up the side or back.

Seriously, shop around.

yummypickledeggs · 13/10/2014 12:27

I've 3 pairs currently- with 33 cms calves have no option but to pay that.
I do see styles I like better elsewhere but they don't fit.

I've had other pairs that have sold for a good price on Ebay - say £70-ish.

I don't use boots for lots of walking and like any they will wear out with hard use.

The styling has got better over the years but wish they were a bit more edgy.
I'm always reluctant to order over the web though now as the foot sizing varies so much, ankle width etc.

Comito · 13/10/2014 12:31

I'm not a big fan of Duo. The last pair I bought were v expensive but extremely tight on the ankle and instep. A lot of their styles are quite frumpy.

If you're looking for outdoor boots then Sorel might be worth considering. I have two pairs from them and they have never leaked.

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 13/10/2014 12:37

They are fairly good quality and as long as you look after them they will last a couple of years. My boots never last years and years anyway, not sure what I do to them. I used to buy them as needed the wider fit calf, but brought some this year as I liked them.

I find the insoles go quite quickly so I now put innersoles in as soon as I get them.

If they get wet I stuff them with newspaper to hold their shape and let them dry out. Ialso check the heels regularly for wear, I find the ones with the rubber grippy soles wear really quickly, agai may be just that I am overly heavy on my boots? do wear them to walk the dogs unl;ess its particularly wet then I wear wellies, other than that just general day to day wear, work (office based) school run, shopping.

yummypickledeggs · 13/10/2014 12:43

Is that code only for people who have been emailed it? Cos it doesn't work.

JustAShopGirl · 13/10/2014 12:46

have had 2 different pairs - heels and soles wear really really, reallyquickly - could also feel stones through the sole- and the second pair I had only lasted 6 months until the zip went at the ankle.

Also found them tight on the instep - not for bunion owners! They do a nice wide calf - but then the foot shape is not wide enough.

they seem much more expensive for what they are this year - the only real selling point I can see with them is the calf measurement fitting. Shop around...

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 13/10/2014 13:21

Wow just looked at the new section and the prices have jumped up. Thought my outlet priced ones didn't seem that bargainous. Will wait for January sales to buy anymore.
