I think coloured tights should be banned. Have never seen anyone look good in them. Agree black thick tights and an ankle boot and dark poss black top

peasandlove · 10/10/2014 07:00

can you try this shape of boot?
m and s

Floisme · 10/10/2014 08:10

Your legs are great and you can definitely wear short skirts. I agree with black tights with this outfit but not for all the time. It depends what else you're wearing - I think they can look awful if you're wearing colour.

yummypickledeggs · 10/10/2014 08:16

sorry to disagree with all the lovely comments but I do think It's too short. I think adding another 3-4 inches would be more flattering. it would still be above the knee by 2-3 inches but not quite so short.

burnishedsilver · 10/10/2014 08:35

The black tights look good. Coloured tights rarely work. They are best kept for panto characters.

If you're not entirely confidant with the length of the skirt you could have the hem let down. I've done that very successfully with a few skirts and dresses recently. I'm a lot older than you though.

Floisme · 10/10/2014 09:04

I usually prefer grey but I have been known to crack open the occasional packet of coloured tights so

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 10/10/2014 09:11

Black tights good. Bin the cardi.

50ShadesOfSummer · 10/10/2014 10:25

With you, flo. Mainly black tights, but will do maroon, navy, grey as well. Hell, have even worn worn red, yellow and green occasionally.

kaykayblue · 10/10/2014 10:58

What is the occasion for? Just every day wear? Workwear? Going out wear? Meeting friends wear?

It's difficult to really say much just on a picture without context.

Here are my totally honest views:

  • Never wear that cardigan with that combination again! It might look good with some dark skinny/straight leg jeans, ankle boots, and some sort of plain top, like one of THESE, in whatever colour suits you.

  • Since you are wearing a dark top, you need to wear a dark bra underneath. It might just be the camera, but it looks like you have a day glo white bra beneath the purple top. Not a good look.

  • I hate coloured/patterned tights with a passion, so I am biased on this point I will admit. But colourful tights being matched to tops, handbags, hairbands, whatever...I have always hated it. It looks tacky (imo). But again, maybe that's just a question of personal taste.

*Skirt length....you can probably get away with actually. But not with knee high boots. I think this is it actually - everything you are wearing works, but not together.

SKIRT
The skirt would work much better with opaque black tights (or dark navy, I can't tell what colour the skirt is), and ballet flats like THESE or THESE, combined with a plain top in a neutral colour such as THIS or light grey, or whatever neutral colour suits you.

CARDIGAN
I've already gone through the cardigan above.

PURPLE TOP

Would look better coupled with a black vest top underneath, to prevent it being see through, and a pair of well fitting straight leg or skinny jeans in a dark colour.

TIGHTS
Burn them

BOOTS
There is nothing wrong with your boots, but wearing knee highs with a short skirt is a bit...I don't know. It's just not a good look in my eyes. I am not a big fan of knee high boots at the best of times, so although there is nothing wrong with them at all (they look like nice boots), I can't give you any ideas of how to wear them.

kaykayblue · 10/10/2014 10:58

PS, you seem to have a very nice figure. It's just all hidden away under that outfit.

yummypickledeggs · 10/10/2014 10:59

If you closed the gap between the hem and your knees by 50% it would look fine. But the cardi is all wrong. You need a black or dark grey cardi and either longer- so it's almost the same length as the skirt- or much shorter so it sits on your waist. That length cardi chops the whole look up and you've too many different lengths going on- boots, skirt, top, cardi.

yummypickledeggs · 10/10/2014 11:02

Agree with KK to an extent. The top and cardi look baggy and the skirt and boots look tight fitting. It looks like 2 different outfits/ styles cobbled together. But I still say the skirt is too short - it's verging on mutton. Sorry.

yummypickledeggs · 10/10/2014 11:05

In the 3rd photo the skirt looks longer- is it the same one? Is it black or navy?

46direct · 10/10/2014 11:17

Thanks everyone

Is the cardi pale pink or creamy beige?

aintnothinbutagstring · 10/10/2014 11:48

I like the ankle boots, I think they're more slimming on leg and more 'now' than the other boots. I quite like coloured tights (I'm 29 to give a reference, and I think you look much much younger than your years) - try Falke, they do amazing tights, not very cheap but will last so you're not buying all the time. I'm looking to buy maroon tights as this is my fave colour.

I think with that outfit, theres probably a bit too many colours going on. But you look great and congrats on the weight loss. Hopefully you'll have lots of fun finding some good outfits.

46direct · 10/10/2014 13:12

Pale pink cardi yummy

hellsbellsmelons · 10/10/2014 13:47

Well I'm same age as you and I got THESE recently.
Very flattering but I never got a chance to wear them as my 16 YO DD nabbed them pretty quickly.
Not sure I could of carried them off in reality but you never know!
Quite nice very reasonable price!
If it was me though it would have to be these (yes I have them in black and tan but I like to make things look a bit quirky)
But just seen these ones and I like them.
Or these tan ones

yummypickledeggs · 10/10/2014 14:09

well, this is just my opinion but there is too much going on with colours and styles. Green is a very hard colour to co-ordinate but I've have said a close fitting wool jumper in navy, possibly black or certain teal- blues, with black tights and black boots.

Don't want to offend but the cardi is 'granny' and does nothing for you.
The purple top and the purple tights cut you in half making you look like a sandwich with the skirt as the filling IYSIW!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 10/10/2014 17:11

I didn't comment on the cardigan, as the OP didn't ask for opinions on it, but I agree that it's not great. I do, however, think it is v unfair to say that she skirt is too short and is 'mutton' (I bloody hate that word).

With plain black tights and some ankle boots, it won't 'feel' as short anyway.

OP - Is the skirt green? How about trying it with plain black opaques, a black top and something like this? There will be people telling you that they are 'mum' boots but I say, so what? This site is called Mumsnet so it's not like we can all pretend we're not mums and are strutting our stuff around Shoreditch dressed in Helmut Lang every day, or whatever!

Replace the cardigan with a biker jacket, and you'd get a whole different vibe to the outfit, too.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 10/10/2014 17:21

Are you really 46, OP? You must have a portrait in the attic! I think the skirt looks absolutely great and if I had legs as good as yours I'd want to show them off too. I also see nothing whatsoever wrong with the knee high boots and the skirt together (with the black tights) as it just shows off your legs to even better advantage. Well done you!

Now try a closer fitting top. You can clearly carry it off.

Pollywallywinkles · 10/10/2014 17:39

I personally think that the skirt would look better if it was a couple of inches longer. That has nothing to do with age as I would say the same to a twenty year old.

46direct · 10/10/2014 18:21

The first boots hellsbellsmelons linked to I love.
Would they be appropriate with short skirts for me? (I need guidance! Obviously )
Other ideas what I can wear the boots with?
Gonna get a black roll or turtle neck jumper and hopefully another skirt.
Re biker jacket (Like them but feel I look old in them too..)
Ps I am actually 48 not 46 (thanks), the number in my username references something else!
