My hair is black!

I am Angry. I'm naturally a medium brown and have had my hair dyed a lovely dark brown with a reddish shine for years by the same hairdresser. At least 10years. Since moving to a different part of the country I've had to change hairdresser and I asked for the same colour. My hair is black! Not even darkest brown but actual black. It blends in with my top. I'm dreading the root regrowth and I look soooo washed out and just, well, false. How can I fade it? I've heard head and shoulders works... How many washes? Please help, I don't want to leave the house :(

I would go back to the hairdresser and see what they can do for you to fix it. You can buy products like ColourB4 that removes dye from hair but I would go back to them first

Wash with head and shoulders. All dyes fade eventually, that will give it a helping hand.

StatisticallyChallenged · 09/10/2014 14:13

I'd go back to the hairdressers too, but in the meantime (speaking as someone super pale but with naturally dark hair!) ramp up the blusher and eye make up a bit - it will make you look/feel a bit better.

Mine went too black a while ago. I spent 2 evenings in a row washing it for half an hour with fairy liquid and then head and shoulders, which faded it a bit. And I mean literally rinse, lather, rinse, lather, rinse, lather... Very boring!

YY to making your make up a bit more dramatic while you wait.

But go back and tell them that it's different and see what they can do.

RoyCroppersOldBag · 09/10/2014 16:30

I would go back to the hairdresser, but also contact my old hairdresser to see if they could give you the details of the colour they were using on your hair that you liked......they should be OK doing this as you've actually moved to a different area of the country and not just decided to stop going to them.

I know feels awful now, but it'll made quite quickly :)

go to Boots and get some of the hair dye remover it works really well

MimiSunshine · 09/10/2014 16:59

Go back to the hairdressers and tell them its not what you asked for and is far too dark. Ask them what they can do to fix it, if they query why you paid and left tell them the lighting made it seem lighter in the salon but you now realise it’s not right and need it fixing.

They can strip the colour out and re-dye it, these days that’s not going to cause any damage (don’t let them fob you off), I’ve had it done a couple of times in the past when I’ve wanted to change big colour and my hairdresser was fine with it as my hair was in overall good condition.

They should want to fix it for you for reputation alone but if they don’t then wash with a lightening shampoo (i didn’t find H&S to be that good for striping colour) and just keep going, although black can be a stubborn bugger and to get back your lovely warm colour you are going to need a hairdresser to ultimately fix it for you.

Hair can oxidise and turn even darker after the first couple of days.

Def go back and complain. It is easy for them to sort.

LoafersOrLouboutins · 09/10/2014 22:18

I would go back to the salon but I'm currently in the highlands FFs! I used to live in London (fab hairdresser), then moved to Devon (fucking black hair) and now my sister is getting married in two weeks time so I'm in Scotland helping her to prepare for it. My old hairdresser used Goldwell colours, I believe it was shade 5A? Argh how often should I head and shoulders it? Yes yes to the heavy blusher and eye makeup.

Vosene shampoo.

LoafersOrLouboutins · 09/10/2014 22:23

Is vosene better than head and shoulders?

I would alternate using head and shoulders a few times on a night, then sticking loads of pure coconut oil to sleep in, both of them help fade colour.
Theres also something to do with crushed vitamin c tablets, but you will have to google that one a bit more. I also remember you can make a mixture with bicarb of soda.
It should definitely fade in 2 weeks, I would probably order an Adore semi perm dye in a browny colour once it's faded before the wedding. They are just vegetable dyes, no peroxide etc. they make your hair super shiny but wash out with a few washes then you will be able to get it sorted properly

WipsGlitter · 09/10/2014 22:50

My mum had a hair dye incident before my sisters wedding. She called Clairol and that's what they told her to use.

Milmingebag · 09/10/2014 22:54

One way to fix this is to use a prelightener. Use that but only for about 15-20 mins to strip some of the darkness out. It will turn very brassy. Go over it once all rinsed out and dried with a permanant chestnut/golden brown. Look for 5.3 to denote a mid brown but with gold added for warmth. This should leave you with a nice mid brown with chestnut lights. Loreal is best I have found.

After you've got your money back from the salon..... Get yourself some vitamin C efferescent tablets & clarifying shampoo (head & shoulders will be fine or a tresemme one).

Google the vitamin C & shampoo hair dye removal method. Basically you crush the tablets to powder & mix in the shampoo, work the froffy mess into damp hair, wrap in cling film & leave on for an hour. Shampoo out & condition. Should remove most, if not all of the colour. Cheaper & less damaging than colour B4.

0898 · 11/10/2014 17:21

Yep, the vit c method works. You can buy powdered from some chemists and Holland and Barrett

XiCi · 11/10/2014 17:42

I would get yourself to a hairdresser. I imagine your hair is going to look pretty awful if you strip it at home with vosene/head&shoulders/fairy liquid.

Bigoleheffer · 11/10/2014 17:48

Aveda scalp shampoo will strip it in days. Much better than head and shoulders. I guarantee you results. And don't use that hairdresser again.

Mumelie · 12/10/2014 17:25

Go swimming - nothing ruins my colour quicker than chlorine in a pool! I have had this problem as use medium brown and some makes go very very dark! usually takes about a week to look ok (washing everyday). I use Aveda scalp shampoo every day and it does not affect my colour - but Head n Shoulders does.
