Best concealer for facial blemish?

Luxaroma · 08/10/2014 23:13

Dd(11) has a very group of blood vessels that have recently risen to the surface of her skin. GP says the only treatment is laser surgery but dd us too scared so we are left with concealer.

I got her colour matched at boots no 7 but after a few weeks the concealer started to dry out her skin and it now looks clumpy - any good suggestions for heavy concealer on her very young skin?
She's self conscious about it and everytime she goes without concealer well meaning people keep asking her what happened her face.

Sorry, no suggestions, but I have this too, so watching with interest.

burnishedsilver · 08/10/2014 23:28

When I was young I used to use rimmel hide the blemish. It is thick and is drying on its own but it spreads really well when used over nivea a lotion.

I had a similar mark beside my nose. It was there for a couple of years but eventually went away by itself.

ozymandiusking · 08/10/2014 23:33

Almay do one called a line smoothing concealer, which might be worth a try.
Also, Almay complexion concealer which is more for spots but that is quite drying as well, so I wouldn't recommend that.

I have estee lauder disappear smoothing creme concealer - which may be discontinued and replaced by this:

www.esteelauder.co.uk/product/643/13015/Product-Catalog/Makeup/Face/Foundations/Double-Wear-Maximum-Cover/Camouflage-Makeup-For-Face-Body-SPF-15/index.tmpl

Get the concealer brush too.

They are ridiculously expensive BUT worth it, better than anything I've tried before, and you need a tiny tiny amount - think the size of about 3 hundreds and thousands squeezed onto the back of your (non dominant) hand. Then you gently work a tiny amount into the brush and carefully and very lightly brush over the blemish till it's disappeared. I sort of start from the middle of the bit I want to conceal and work outwards, if that makes sense. The 15ml tube of concealer that I have has lasted MONTHS. I expect I'll get a year out of it. I use it 5 days out of 7.

I have very sensitive skin, prone to dry bit and spotty bits and lumpy bits, and the smoothing creme concealer is the business. I am on a shit computer so I can't investigate if the camouflage makeup in the link is more or less the same stuff, but if it's similar, sell something and buy it!

Estee Lauder counters in boots etc might give you a demo or a free sample - do this before you invest.

How about a full coverage foundation used as a concealer? I personally find that concealers don't really set in the same way as some foundations and that it wears off.

I'd have a look at Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation or the maximum coverage Double Wear foundation. They're around £30 afaik, but as you're only using it on a tiny area of the face, it'll last for ages.

There's also Vichy Dermablend and Keromask camouflage makeup, but my experience with Dermablend is that it needs to be set with powder to last. Dermablend is sold at Boots.

I'd also have a look at Mac - they're good and have a few different concealers so you might be able to find one that'll work.

Bonbonchance · 09/10/2014 00:06

Dermablend foundation is great, the lady in Boots advised me about using it to cover marks (a massive dark bruise in my case). I think I just dabbed a bit of powder on top to set it.

elmo2014 · 09/10/2014 00:11

Estee Lauder Maximum Cover is fantastic. Cannot recommend it enough. I know how your daughter feels, it's so hard. Using this I never have anyone ask what's happened to my face.

Whippet81 · 09/10/2014 08:47

Is it a spider neavus? I get them all the time - I had one on the end of my nose years ago and I could never get rid of it so I paid to have it zapped - it cost about £100 and completely went after two zaps - honestly honestly it is not painful at all - they don't go as deep as say tattoo removal so ignore what people say about that being painful - it was like someone flicking me - gently at that.

It's hard to explain to someone who hasn't got them how irritating they are but they drive you mad - I am currently pregnant and have got one on my face, one on my chest and numerous on my arm - as soon as I'm back to normal I will go and be zapped.

GP was useless - best of finding somewhere private - PM me is if you want more info.

Luxaroma · 09/10/2014 09:15

Hi whippet - yes it's spider neavus. GP said treament wasn't covered under the NHS but we'd happily pay for private treatment but dd is very scared it will hurt and no reassuring will change her mind. We've told her that when she's ready we'll make the phone call but for now she's opted for make up as the solution.

I understand - it was the best money I have ever spent - no amount of make-up covers it though it always slid off and she'll be checking her face for ever - I was nervous and then felt a complete plank when the laser hit me - it does leave a very dark mark for a couple of days so best to have done in the holidays really if she is at school.

They normally do a free consultation as well.

I got so upset with people (read men) making jokes about the spot on the end of my nose it really started to knock my confidence. DP cannot see the fuss at all - I now have one on my top lip and cheek and I can't tell you how they piddle me off. Make up wise Benefit Erase Paste is the best but I have recently discovered 17 Phwoar Paint after a thread on here and that is pretty good too.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/10/2014 13:22

Bare minerals bisque concealer it's great for fair skins and covering red.

Shop · 09/10/2014 13:35

Definitely bare minerals bisque concealer applied with a synthetic concealer brush.

I've tried loads of different ones but that it great at covering redness.

MiaSparrow · 09/10/2014 14:52

OP I'm an expert on concealers - 20 years of PCOS acne scarring on my chin. I absolutely swear by Benefit's Boi-ing industrial strength concealer www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk/product/view/boi-ing (does what it says on the tin). Not cheap at £17.50 but lasts ages and you get a complete cover-up.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 09/10/2014 17:36

Boing lasted exactly ten minutes on meSad

SarahBeenysBumblingApprentice · 09/10/2014 18:45

Laura Mercier and a brush, obvs.

Skinheadmermaid · 09/10/2014 18:51

The liquid concealer by Collection is the very best one. She should use some sort of primer underneath to help the concealer stay on and she can then set it with powder.
I have the most appalling skin; hair, scars, spots and it covers everything.

yazzy85 · 09/10/2014 19:09

I second Benefit's Boi-ing, works well for me too.

iwantgin · 09/10/2014 19:14

This is the best ever concealer Clinique

i am on my third tube in oooh.. 15 years ? It lasts me a long, long time. Great for small yet darker marks. It is very thick and stays put. It's not so good on flaky spot scabs, but sounds like your DD's marks will be suitable.

FWIW I had a small spider naevus on the tip of my nose for a few years. i went to a local beauty salon, and had it zapped off. Only took one session as it was quite small (but annoying). Cost me about £30 iirc.

Didn't hurt at all. I have had laser hair removal previously - and it was nothing like the same amount of 'flicking'.

ashmts · 09/10/2014 19:23

Another vote for Benefit Boi-ing. I have a birthmark on my cheek (port wine stain) and even after laser treatment it's quite dark and red/purple. Boi-ing covers it well without being cakey or orange and I just use rimmel stay matte powder on top and it stays put all day. A brush is a must though. I don't often wear foundation with it, just a light tinted moisturiser under, and the coverage is still excellent. And I'm 24 so have teenagey skin.

I don't always wear make up though, I know she's self-conscious but I really hope she doesn't feel she needs to always cover it up.

Ikeameatballs · 09/10/2014 19:25

Another vote for Boing!

Luxaroma · 09/10/2014 19:51

She does feel like she can't go out without make up. Wouldn't even come into the supermarket with me yesterday. It's amazing how many people comment - it looks like she's hurt herself and they are just making conversation, she feels hugely embarrassed by it.

I just want to support her and make her feel good about herself. I think she'll eventually get lasered but it needs to come from her not me. She's hoping it goes away by itself.

I have some Bare minerals I'd forgotten about and a few concealer brushes, I seem to be able to get a better finish with my ring finger and gentle patting but will continue to practice with the brush.

I think a girlie trip to the cosmetic counter maybe required!

Thank you all!

I''m another who uses Bare Minerals bisque concealer.I apply it with one of those wedge-shaped sponges. Stays on all day.
