Boots for commute

It can't be that hard, surely? All I want is some comfortable, elegant (go with a suit), mid-heel boots in a non-brown dark colour that will survive being walked in for about an hour every day whilst not destroying my feet in the process. Ideally up to about £150 max as they will inevitably get trashed. I can't find any! They all hurt my feet Sad

Where do you get your commuting shoes from?

For walking 1h every day i would definitely wear trainers or other type of comfortable shoes and keep the smart boots / shoes in the office.

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 07/10/2014 09:15

Trainers are too flat though Sad
My work trousers are hemmed for heels so anything flat and they drag on the ground.

It's an hour in 4 fifteen minute lots, so my feet aren't toooo tired, I just can't manage it in work-suitable heels!

I wear orthotics so have to buy from comfort brands, such as Think! (quirky) which are slightly wider and usually have a thickish cork insole, which gives a little extra height (and insulation) without too high a heel. Sorry can't do links but Shoon have quite a few comfort brands to choose from (and £20 off at present). I'm more influenced by comfort than style, so maybe not what you are looking for!

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 07/10/2014 10:00

Comfort brands sound good! The Think ones are a bit too quirky and a bit too chunky for me though.

How do I tell which ones on Shoon are comfort brands? I have orthotics too, which I really should wear more often Blush

I think they only do comfort brands - but not all have removable insoles suitable for orthotics. Some brands are narrower than others (narrow is a problem for me) I am lucky in living near a shop so can try things out. Hotter might be worth a look too if you have one near by. The styles aren't cutting edge but a lot nicer than comfort styles used to be IMHO - or am I getting old?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/10/2014 17:56

I'd forget about looking elegant and get a comfortable pair of flat boots. Nobody will bat an eyelid and you can change into heels or whatever when you get to work.

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 07/10/2014 18:51

I already change when I get to work Remus but I'm trying to find something I can handle wearing every day and not feel too frump (terribly vain Grin)...

I'll try hotter, I think there's one near me. There may be a shoon too. I suspect this is going to entail a trip to an actual shop, rather than internet (sigh)...

Thank you for the suggestions!

What about... The good old M&S mum boots? Comfy, hard wearing and relatively cheap so you could get new ones should the walk knacker them a bit. Might be slightly less frumpy than ortho boots?

Am aware that by suggesting those I have committed a heinous MN crime so I shall dereg forthwith.

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 07/10/2014 19:03

I like "comfy, hard wearing and relatively cheap" Grin

I don't know what M&S mum boots are though? I can never find what I'm looking for in M&S because I don't understand all of their in house brands (not from the UK) so I tend to avoid it!

Hmm, I think these ones are fairly classic examples of the genre: www.marksandspencer.com/leather-panelled-ankle-boots-with-insolia/p/p22245763

A chunky heel is probably easiest for commuting IMHO.

Laquila · 07/10/2014 19:23

I used to have a sort of shoe version of these (also M&S) and they were INSANELY comfy, although fairly fugly, TBH:

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 07/10/2014 20:21

Hmm. They're not beautiful are they? Why is it so difficult to make comfortable shoes look good Sad

I'm going to have to try some on I think. Maybe the happiness of my feet will outweigh the slightly utilitarian appearance of them...

OP posts:
TheSpottedZebra · 07/10/2014 20:44

Ha ha.
Nope. But for just the commute maybe they're not so bad?

I can't think of a heeled boot that is great for walking - that is also attractive and smart.

ThisBitchIsResting · 07/10/2014 20:53

I just wear uggs and tuck my trousers in. I walk a lot for my commute and care more about comfort than style. Keep nice shoes at office. Changing back into uggs for way home is like stepping into clouds, yum.

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 07/10/2014 20:54

I can't help thinking there is a massive business opportunity being missed here. Assuming it's technically possible to make such a thing!

OP posts:
MinesAPintOfTea · 07/10/2014 21:05

I wear dresses (with wool tights in winter). Any footwear goes, and its easy to keep a spare pair of tights in my bag for when I inevitably get soaked by a lorry.

Nevercan · 07/10/2014 21:13

Have you tried Clarks? I always thunk their shoes are nice and comfy

PepperMallow · 07/10/2014 21:25

I pin up my trousers with safety pins to save them from getting dirty as I change into heels once at work. Boots with a rubbery sole suit me best comfort-wise.

HappyGirlNow · 07/10/2014 21:28

I just ordered these for commuting:

VeryLittleGravitasIndeed · 07/10/2014 22:37

Pepper I used to pin up my trousers, I might have to go back to that...

Happy are they comfortable?

Thanks everyone for the help.

HappyGirlNow · 09/10/2014 08:21

Sorry Very I haven't even picked them up yet! I'll report back Grin I hope so, I wanted comfort with a bit of style!

Artandco · 09/10/2014 08:32

Also recommend dresses. Can add thick tights and wear variety of shoes. Can wear with or without a jacket. And no need to match top with bottoms
