Ash Virgins - Passé? Too 'young'?

polyhymnia · 04/10/2014 15:57

I'm always on the lookout for really comfortable footwear that isn't too boring.

Have been aware of Ash Virgins for a while now and noticed they appear on S and B from time to time.

Yesterday was passing Ash shop in Marylebone High St and went in and tried some on - the Virginia ones which are black with a black toecap, so suitable for winter.

I found them very comfortable, easy to get on, a good height for wearing with jeans, and personally really liked the signature buckles .

Tempted but wonder if they've been around so long they're now a cliche and/ or would look a bit try hard on some quite 'mature' like me ( though usually I'm a staunch believer in age not dictating what you wear, just being a number, etc).

Fwiw I'm tall and large hourglass with long slim legs so wear a lot of skinnies with long tops, with a smartish parka as my everyday autumn coat.

Views, please?

I'm 55 & had a pair of about 5 years. You don't say how old you are but I don't think they are too young on me (others may disagree of course but MrBearleigh likes them)

TBH they are a pain to get on with all those buckles, but they are comfortable and the pewter ones go with everything.

kikidee · 04/10/2014 17:31

I bought some a couple of months ago having wanted some for a really long time and I absolutely love them. They are really comfortable and I think they look smarter than Converse. I'm 42 - don't think you can really be to old for them. I've got the Perkish colour and would buy another pair.

msfreud · 04/10/2014 17:35

Mine have a zip at the side and not at all a pain to get on?!

I don't think they look too young - sounds like they'd go well with your style, OP. Especially the black goes with everything.

polyhymnia · 04/10/2014 18:15

Thanks - encouraging so far. The ones I saw had a zip so very easy to get on.

I tried them on the other day, I really like them but I was was a bit worried I looked too stumpy in them... Only 5ft 3 as it is!

Cranagh · 04/10/2014 20:53

I really like them, I'm on my third pair now. I wear skinny jeans a lot too and they go well. I don't think they look too young, I hope not, I'm 42. Go for it.

I'm 38 and have three pairs - in pewter, black and sand Grin

The zip at the side makes them easy to get on and off - you don't need to fiddle with the buckles.

They're really comfortable and beat Converse hands down!

BeattieBow · 05/10/2014 21:09

I don't think they're at all young are they? They are definitely mum shoes imo.

I really like them though fwiw. (and have some too but want some pewter ones now).

peasandlove · 06/10/2014 04:08

I have pewter. Love them

Madamecastafiore · 06/10/2014 04:11

Have 5 pairs and love them. I don't have the whole which boots do I buy this year issue every year either.

polyhymnia · 06/10/2014 08:57

Could I just ask whether they're supportive enough to be comfortable when walking a lot ( in town, not country hikes) and also reasonably weatherproof?

I still like them I only know over 40s who wear them I have a 20 yr old son whose girl friends are all fashion crazy and they don't wear them or anything like them really.

ocelot41 · 06/10/2014 17:07

I had a pair three years ago but the soles wore through in 3 months. I love the look of them but can't be doing with shoes that cost over a hundred quid and wear out so fast

VioletBrogues · 06/10/2014 17:23

I love them. Agree though that the soles wear through quickly which is annoying for such an expensive pair of shoes.

polyhymnia · 06/10/2014 18:52

Thanks - you've helped me persuade myself to go for them.

Now can't decide whether to have:

i) the black ones with black toe caps which must be more practical for winter and, within that, whether to have:

i) a) the silver buckles
www.ashfootwear.co.uk/womens-c1/ash-virginia-black-leather-trainers-p1088 or:

i) b) the black buckles (but do the black buckles make them look almost too subtle and un-Ash like?)
www.ashfootwear.co.uk/womens-c1/ash-virgin-ter-all-black-leather-buckle-trainers-p1270

Or, as I have black ankle boots already, should I go for:

ii) the graphite - lovely colour, goes with everything, but does have the white toe caps, so probably/possibly not so good for winter.

I'm going to say graphite as I have the pewter and it's the same. Are you going to try them on first? They come up slightly large in my experience. Which is good when you're a sz 41 like me Grin

polyhymnia · 06/10/2014 20:31

Yes I'm a 41 too and tried them on in the shop and found their 41 generous and just right for wearing with socks, etc.

Any other views - though I guess it's got to come down to my personal choice in the end, all opinions from other enthusiasts welcome.

I LOVE mine, they are so comfy. I'd size down though

kikidee · 07/10/2014 21:07

My wardrobe are having a flash sale with 20% off Ash. I think it ends tonight.

polyhymnia · 07/10/2014 21:25

Oh thanks.
