If you are early 40s and stylish where do you shop?

I have been in a total rut and am revamping my social life currently which means lots of nights out.
I am 42 and 8-10 with big boobs and a big ol' arse.
Kind of hourglass shaped with thick chunky masculine legs (although not too bad from knee down)
What should I be wearing and where should I be shopping if I am to look stylish, and of this century?
Any help, pitifully gratefully received!

Hi, I'm 42 also, I like to think I'm stylish, I'm interested in fashion, and have really made an effort in the last year or 2 to not be 'mumsy' as, post DC, I was mostly interested in practical, comfortable clothing/footwear (my mumsy years).

My style can be described as 'rock-chic' (not 'chick', did that in my 20's Grin). I take inspiration from Kate Moss, Emmanuelle Alt & Charlotte Gainsbourg. I mostly wear skinny jeans with a fitted longish t-shirt (long sleeve if cold) and drapey cardigan, biker style waxed jacket. Footwear is embellished flats, either ballet pumps or sandals and black biker boots or ankle boots.

Most of my clothes are understated items but in any outfit, one that is more standout like embellished or animal print. So I like detailed shoes or sandals, really after some snake boots at the moment but ideally black or grey love these. My legs are my best feature so I like skinnies with detailing, eg zips, like these. If my top is pattern then will wear plain understated other items.

My favourite range is Mint Velvet but its above my budget. So I mostly look for similar but cheaper items from Next, but avoiding their patterned 'typical next items', good for jeans, H&M, think they do quite stylish clothes at a good price, good for 'going out' tops and quirky trousers/jeans with detailing. Dorothy Perkins for t-shirts/basics, Warehouse, for 'evening out' clothes mostly, I like this top and for casual wear, I would wear this top with some grey or denim blue skinnies, or for night out maybe with a pleather pencil skirt or coated black skinnies. Love TKMaxx but need to be picky as there's lots of rubbish with a few gems.

I always pay a bit more for footwear so more likely to buy somewhere like John Lewis for Dune, Bertie or Carvela boots/shoes.

I am not quite 40 but I have larger boobs and LOVE pepperberry (division of bravissimo) for clothes that fit my shape. They do lots of nice dresses and more casual wear for curvy people :)

SofaCanary · 03/10/2014 17:59

'Rock-chic', I love that MrsPMT!

GeorginaWorsley · 03/10/2014 19:48

Am late 4 summer but very stylish Wink
I like
Mint Velvet
White Company
some Whistles and Jigsaw
Hush
plain Boden, but not as much as I used to,
Sandwich
some Marks carefully chosen, especially Autograph and footwear
very occasional Phase Eight
Great Plains

Trying to visualise my wardrobe and what labels appear most!

GeorginaWorsley · 03/10/2014 19:49

Late for summer?
Wtf
Grin
Autocorrect

Late forties obv

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 19:55

Well i am late for summer too...er..no mid forties hee hee...well 46 to be precise and late forties [47] in a month [weeps].

My clothes are labelled
Toast, White stuff, Boden, Next for some odd things, Seasalt, Saltwater[ now i believe has gone into liquidation or something :(]

rookiemater · 03/10/2014 19:56

I'm not sure if I'm stylish or not, I don't think I'm too bad. My list is pretty much the same as Georginas with the addition of a few others :

  • Great Plains, but some of the stuff is quite short
  • Captain Tortue - got some great cardigans and tops at my sons school fair as one of the agents was there
  • Next Blush - recently bought some nice chinos and fairly decent tops, but they do tend to overdecorate stuff and I have to watch out for the material as these days I find man mind fibre tends to have me perspiring.

As you're a curvy 8-10, you lucky sod, I'd stay away from overly loose stuff which tends to be found in White Stuff and head for Mint Velvet first.

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 19:57

I am a quirky dresser. I kind of like quirky prints. Somebody said i was very west end chic [whatever that means..probably quirky!]

MuttonCadet · 03/10/2014 19:58

Early forties and I like to think stylish, for casual wear I use mint velvet a lot.

MrsPMT · 03/10/2014 20:08

Also OP, not sure how 'big' your boobs & bum can be if you wear 8/10 ConfusedGrin
I would agree with more fitted styles being better when curvy. I'm slim but curvy size 12 and baggy clothes hang off my bust and make me look bigger IMO.

Greengardenpixie · 03/10/2014 20:30

Nothing wrong with next. I have a few really nice dresses from there. One in particular from last year. Black grey and jade green colourblock wool shift. its absolutely gorgeous.

SadTimes14 · 03/10/2014 20:46

Have you checked out Baukjen? The main steam to the maternity bunch Isabella Oliver. Love it
(My first post in years once having been a regular but kids and sauv blanc have taken over my life!)

SirRaymondClench · 03/10/2014 21:24

These suggestions are great! Please keep them coming as I need all the help I can get!
MrsPMT My boobs are 28H and I have a tiny waist but a mahoooooosive arse! And don't forget my chunky legs. It makes finding clothes a challenge to begin with because I struggle with sizing as I have to fit the boobs in somewhere and I don't like looking booby!

Also try poetry, hobbs, jigsaw, wrap london oh and anthropologie

frankietwospots · 03/10/2014 21:45

I'm 42 and my friends always say I should become a personal shopper as I'm pretty good at picking out things that suit people. I keep an open mind when it comes to where I shop and I use Pinterest a lot to build a portfolio of ideas. I have a mix of Top Shop, Boden, M&S, H&M, Whistles (mainly off ebay), Uniqlo, Gap, Next, Zara and River Island in my wardrobe. I also have bits and pieces from Jack Wills, & Other Stories and Monki, as well as charity shop finds.

Sunbeam18 · 03/10/2014 21:59

TolstoyAteMyHamster · 04/10/2014 00:25

As I get older (41...eek) I've more or less abandoned prints and anything fussy or frilly. I wear navy, grey, black and white with occasional bright pinks, purples, blues and greens. Basics are from Gap, White Company and Uniqlo, with skirts and trousers from Jigsaw, Kin at John Lewis, Comptoir des Cotonniers and Whistles. Dresses and smarter tops from Reiss and LK Bennett. The occasional splashy item from Paul Smith, Day Birger and Mikkelson and Nicole Farhi.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 04/10/2014 00:29

I'm 38 can I still chip in. I feel quite nice in my clothes only wear dresses. Like to look very feminine. Infact d.p describes me as a lady in the street but a freak in the sheets.
I am plus size.
I shop at Evans, Simply Be, New Look, Atos.
I am very motherly but I certainly do not dress mumsy and frumpy.

Saurus72 · 04/10/2014 18:03

I agree with Tolstoy re: paring things down, I think it is far more flattering. I also think good quality fabrics make a massive difference - cotton, silk, cashmere, merino - as cheap fabrics look very cheap past 40. I love Whistles (although the products are becoming increasingly out of reach price-wise except with a discount code/sale), Hobbs and Jaeger (outlet only) for work and the occasional weekend dress, & Other Stories and Cos for weekend clothes.
