If you have highlights what do you do to your hair to keep it looking nice?

I have highlights and am due my next lot in 2 weeks. My hair is like straw it is so dry! Hair is darker underneath as I tend to just half a head done.
My hair is shoulder length with layers and quite thick with a natural wave. My dh jokes I look like one of Charlies Angels, in fact I'm not sure he is even joking!!

I have greys poking through so like having highlights to disguise them but my hair just looks a mess.

I see lots of mums at school with highlights and none of them have hair that looks like mine ie a birds nest! They have smooth blonde locks that styles nicely. How do people find the time to maintain it? Mine would look neater if straightened but it takes an age and I work too so just dont have much spare time to be doing that.

Please can anyone help suggest what to do? My hairdresser is coming in 2 weeks.

last time i had highlights id use a hair serum and shiner to help smooth the hair down and make it shiney
i have the same problem with my hair but its all one colour and i use coconut oil as a deep conditioner twice or 3 times a week then shampoo twice then conditioner again and ive recently started using a coconut serum i got on amazon

Outflewtheweb · 02/10/2014 17:52

Watching with interest - I could have written your post, Jemster!

Jemster · 02/10/2014 17:52

Thank you, so is your hair all one colour from highlights or a different dyed colour? Mine just looks multicoloured but at least the underneath bits aren't so dry.

Im pretty sure that they spend time blowdrying and straightening .
Mine is like a lions mane if I dont style it using products to tame it.
Heat protecting spray, lots of conditioner and a taming product and mine is swishy!

Jemster · 02/10/2014 17:53

Outflew are you a fellow Charlies Angel?!

Leave in conditioner spray :-)

Jemster · 02/10/2014 17:54

What's a good taming product? I've tried loads and fed up with wasting money.

I always have a full head, lasts much longer and looks better IMHO. I useVo5 smoothly does it serum after washing everytime then rough dry, spray a bit of heat protector and run ghd straightens through. 15 mins whole thing and I hair long thick hair. I do this every other day, have done for years. First day of hair washing hair is down,2nd day wear it up, pony tail or pin front up. Look alright most of the time and pretty low maintenance Smile

Jemster · 02/10/2014 18:14

Thanks Phantom, your hair sounds nice. Do you have different colour blondes used? I never know what colours to ask for but I know I suit warm golden ones rather than ash blonde. Is your hair still a bit damp when you straighten it?

Phantomteadrinker · 02/10/2014 18:33

Hmmm, now I think I have a tint and some bleached ones - i just do what my hairdresser says but yeah 2 tones. My hair is kind of mid blonde. I I rough dry it, shake it a bit and I'd say it 95% dry by the time I quickly straighten it. Nothing beats a good pair of straighteners, hides a multitude of sins , I would cry if my ghds broke!

Jemster · 02/10/2014 18:50

My ghd's are pretty new but I find they seem to drag through my hair rather than glide like the hairdressers ones do. Am I doing something wrong or is it because my hair is so dry?

OP posts:
Phantomteadrinker · 02/10/2014 19:23

Maybe you could do with a repair conditioner? Aussie 3 minute miracle is good and if you use it with the 'smoothly does it' before you blow dry you might find they glide a bit better...?

Ilovenicesoap · 02/10/2014 19:55

Do you use a heat protecting spray ?-i also use Organix shampoo and conditioner-really moisturising as well.

SofaCanary · 02/10/2014 19:58

{Waves at fellow Angel}

Big hair is a curse and a blessing, we get incredible body but we'll never look properly shiny and sleek.

Fredrik Fekkai glossing cream is really good - you've just reminded me to put some on my shopping list. A lick of Argan Oil works ok too.

Jemster · 02/10/2014 20:01

SofaCanary, so what style do you have yours in & where do you buy the Fredrik creme?

OP posts:
SofaCanary · 02/10/2014 20:06

It's long, past bra strap with a few long layers - wouldn't call it a style really Grin

The FF glossing stuff is cheaper bought online: www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=frederic+fekkai+glossing+cream

FeckTheMagicDragon · 02/10/2014 20:08

Another vote for Aussie miracle conditioner, plus try hair oil, it's worked wonders on mine. Highlighted hair takes more looking after. Also use the GDHs sparingly- they will damage your hair even more.

myknickersknackersknockers · 02/10/2014 20:11

I'm naturally quite blonde but have a few highlights. My hair is naturally very dry so use a combination of products and tend to rotate so my hair doesn't get used to them.

I use the Frizz ease three days straight, Aussie leave in conditioner, Moroccan oil and some heat defence spray but tend to use any serum really.

southeastastra · 02/10/2014 20:25

redken anti-snap is great for smoothing and keeping hair soft. also i use the redken diamond shampoo and conditiioner (cheaper from tk maxx) or label M deep moisuture

Outflewtheweb · 03/10/2014 11:41

Jemster, I have a half head, too. It's gone a bit brassy this time - definitely not as nice as usual. I would gladly go back to brunette but there are a few greys kicking around that would be hard to cover without constant touch ups. I have a toddler and a new baby so I'm kind of my own worst enemy with my hair. It dries on its own and occasionally looks quite good but most of the time distinctly unkempt.

SofaCanary · 03/10/2014 11:48

Just remembered, my hairdresser says there's no point doing a whole head of highlights unless you wear it up a lot - as in out of the house, not just when you're doing the hoovering.

She's won colouring awards and stuff so she knows her onions.

peasandlove · 03/10/2014 15:13

Try kiehls straightening cream. I put a blob on when I blow dry and it's really good. They'll give you a sample of it first

ThisBitchIsResting · 03/10/2014 16:42

Number one tip is a weekly overnight soak in pure coconut oil. Get it from the food bit in Tesco.

And blowdry it, or if you don't have time to blowdry, part and comb it into a low bun, let it half dry, then let it loose and use your fingers to comb it into waves, then a tiny bit of styling product on the ends like Loreal Extraordinary Oil.

Sleepflower43 · 03/10/2014 22:30

If you use straighteners try and let your hair dry naturally. Do Aussie 3 minute miracle a couple of times a week and use Aldi Miracle oil every day, applied to damp hair.

Touch of Silver shampoo every couple of weeks to stop it looking yellow.
