I love clarins extra firming day cream but I went to get some today and it's £51 now!! (Usually get as an Xmas present!). Anyone know of anything similar, or shall I get saving my boots points?

Clarins website has good deals on, and always a fair selection of samples. You earn points as well on each purchase.

squoosh · 01/10/2014 14:39

Escentual has 1/3 off French pharmacy brands at the moment. I don't know of an actual dupe for the Clarins cream (have never used it) but a good place to start.

polyhymnia · 01/10/2014 17:21

I love Clarins, always use it and think it's worth the money but I always get the products when there's an instore promotion on when you get very generous sizes if a choice of products . You're supposed to choose 3 or 4 different products but they often let you have two of the same.

By doing it this way , I haven't actually had to purchase a day cream for a year or more.

Crutchlow35 · 01/10/2014 18:30

If you can wait a bit as it will come in a selection box o products for Christmas.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/10/2014 18:42

Aldi restorative day and night creams are practically the same as Clarins multi jour, even come in a glass jar.

pinkfrocks · 01/10/2014 19:05

I used to use Clarins in 1976 when it was first hitting the UK and was only available in some stores- used to buy it in Harrods.

Then, it was quite unique in the way they used plant extracts.

I am certain it has changed. There is perfume added and there are far too many products- have a read of Paula's Choice aka Beautypedia.com and you will be surprised perhaps at the damning reviews she gives it.

With Clarins like many beauty products you pay for the image and the lifestyle associated with it.

AlleyCat11 · 01/10/2014 19:13

Agree with pinkfrocks. I used to buy Clarins eye gel, in the Duty Free. One day I noticed that it no longer said "with plant extracts" on the tube. Haven't bought it since.
I like L'Occitane, though still expensive. Or TK Maxx - they stock a whole range of really good natural stuff.

Tanaqui · 01/10/2014 21:12

Thank you all- l'occitaine brings me out in spots and we don't have an aldi, but I will read that blog.

There was an offer on but you have to buy 2 things, and I don't need anything else!

Botanicbaby · 01/10/2014 22:51

also agree with pinkfrocks

I used to love the Clarins skincare range (but oddly enough not their cosmetics) but went right off it as i prefer more natural stuff now, it just seems so harsh and artificial.

polyhymnia · 01/10/2014 23:58

Oh well, I don't feel I've bought into any particular image or lifestyle - Clarins been my everyday care for many years - and I'm staying with it. I do get lots of nice compliments on my skin, so reckon their stuff has served me well - though I do accept that I may be just lucky and/or other factors are involved.

RonaldMcDonald · 02/10/2014 00:36

I know devotees to Clarins too and they look great for it

I use Olay regenerist ff. very good

pinkfrocks · 02/10/2014 07:36

I've recently tried Olay Reg. and their 3-point and was pleasantly surprised- as good as Clinique IMo- used their Superdefence and Youth Surge for years- but Olay is a fraction of the cost through Amazon and seems very good. You don't get the fancy packaging etc but so what.

Tanaqui · 02/10/2014 09:42

It's taking the risk that something else will make my horribly reactive akin spotty- can't use Clinique dramatically different for example. Don't want to make an expensive mistake by buying cheaper and regretting it iyswim! Might have a look in boots.

toptrumps1 · 02/10/2014 16:19

Our boots has the promo on where you get four free travel size products if you buy two item, or six if you buy three. I only ever buy when they have this promo on, Debenhams also do it, at different times to Boots.

If not Clarins, I'd definitely second Aldi, its fab. Get someone near an Aldi to get you some, even paying the postage its a fraction of the cost of Clarins (£3 a pot I think??!!)

Tanaqui · 02/10/2014 20:01

Our boots doesn't stock clarins but had a 3 for 2 on skin care so I got an avene and 2 la Roche posay to try

I started using clarins a few months back and my skin is transformed. I'm a bit 'eke' at the prices so I too wait for Boots or HoF to do a good offer or will use the Clarins website which often has great deals. Esp search through all if their website, you can usually get the day creams in a set with a free night cream sample and free bag for the same price as just getting the cream on its own.

Sleepyfergus · 08/10/2014 16:49

That's is eek at the prices, not eke!

coffeeinbed · 08/10/2014 17:24

They put up their prices and changed the carrier oil in the Double Serum to a mineral oil. Bad.

I still use their facial and body oils though.

Sleepyfergus · 08/10/2014 17:50

The prices have shot up. I'm sure the extra firming day cream was in the high £30s and now it's £51!!! I'll be a a rapping out the tubes of my sample stash at this rate.

In fact, that's a good tip. I cut the top off the tube when it seems to have finished. Wads and wads still left. I seal it using a nappy bag and hair tie to make it air tight!

I've also been known to take the bread knife to the dispensing bottle of Aveeno. Again, loads left Wink

coffeeinbed · 08/10/2014 17:59

I do it all the time Sleepy.
No tube left uncut.
There's usually some in the top and on the bottom.

Tanaqui · 08/10/2014 19:24

Me too- and if the plastic is too hard to cut (Crabtree and Evelyn rubbish pump dispenser), I put a bit of hot water in and shake it out!

OP posts:
Sleepyfergus · 08/10/2014 19:31

Try a bread knife Tanaqui

KatyS36 · 08/10/2014 19:38

Re cutting tops off. ...

Everyone does this, don't they. ......

Sleepyfergus · 08/10/2014 19:41

I hope so! It took me a while to cotton on though and then when I did,I was shocked how much was left.
