Shellac Question

How long does your Shellac on hands last before chipping?

Had mine on for 3 weeks and started to chip and obviously got the yucky re-growth too!

I had mine done Saturday, they started chipping Sunday morning - not happy.

They now look a real mess and I don't think the woman did them very well either, I use the Lush Coalface soap and it's stained the edges a nasty dark pinky grey where she didn't put the topcoat on, never again.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 01/10/2014 12:45

I wouldn't waste my money on shellac for the following reasons.
I like to change my nail color each day to match what I'm wearing.
I've heard loads of stories about it chipping.
How much is it about £30 it would be cheaper to do what I have done and buy lots of different nail colors
MUA from super drug is brilliant and it's only £1 a bottle and for me there is no chipping.

Lordofmyflies · 01/10/2014 13:06

I get about 3 weeks out of mine before they need to be redone for regrowth. They certainly shouldn't chip before that. I pay £19 every 3 weeks and love it as my technician is brilliant and makes my nails bomb proof so I don't have to think about them between manicures!
I think it is really dependant on the experience of the technician and the quality of product applied.

Whippet81 · 01/10/2014 13:12

I have flaking nails because of the medication I am on and it always lasts 2-3 weeks on me.

I pay £20 - normal nail polish doesn't last a day on me so I can't be bothered - the only problem I find is that I can get bored of the colour so I tend to have neutral tones on.

It's easy to take off as well just don't pick it! I put cotton wool soaked in remover on them and wrap in tinfoil. Leave 20 mins and it scrapes off. I wouldn't pay to have it removed.

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 01/10/2014 13:16

9-14 days or if I am on holiday about 16 days as doing no housework. toe nails last forever until I am bored with the colour.
I am a real fan, I love how shiny they are.

passmethewineplease · 01/10/2014 13:19

2 weeks usually.

Never seen it for £30, it is half that here!

ChickenFajitaAndNachos · 01/10/2014 13:21

some of the spa places charge £40 here but I have found an amazing lady who does it for 10 pounds. before that I too was paying 15.

Catsmamma · 01/10/2014 13:22

it really depends on application I think.

I had a french shellac on and it did not chip, only regrowth, and lasted 4 weeks...I reckon I'd have got another week out of it too, but I was so done with it. That was put on by a "new" girl and she really took her time about it

Subsequently a couple of others have done my nails and mostly I'll get two-three weeks, but consistently from one person the shellac is chipping after days...

so now I cba with it

and my nails are RUINED!! I think slapdash girl was too vigorous with her filing/buffing.

CleanLinesSharpEdges · 01/10/2014 13:23

The proper CND Shellac lasts me 3 weeks plus.

I pay 20... any cheaper and they're usually not using CND Shellac.

carrie74 · 01/10/2014 13:42

2-3 weeks as well for me, dependent on what I'm up to, the quality of my nails underneath, and sometimes the colour. Also I used to use a salon where it started off lasting 3 weeks, but after about a year I was lucky to get 2 weeks. I then started going somewhere else (someone who used to work there), and she said they'd used generic equipment, and did things on the cheap (replacing bulbs with wrong ones, buying stock from ebay etc), and she'd noticed the quality wasn't as good as a result.

Crutchlow35 · 01/10/2014 18:33

My local place does shellac and gel. I get 2 weeks and she charges £12. Oh and it is real CND products.

PinkSparklyElephant · 01/10/2014 18:48

About 2-3 weeks for me and then I soak it off myself. I use Solar Oil in between which I think makes it last. I love it as I can't be bothered to paint my nails and they are in the best condition for a long time.

I pay £25 for mine and the girl who does it is brilliant and the only time she's ever buffed my nails is when I hadn't soaked the shellac off properly.

threepiecesuite · 01/10/2014 18:58

I have Jessica Geleration - similar to Shellac. I pay £26 and get 3-4 weeks out of it before the regrowth just looks daft. It never chips and I love the range of Jessica colours.

PinkSparklyElephant · 01/10/2014 19:01

I tried Jessica three but it lifted within a couple of days. I had the same problem with OPI so wasn't optimistic about the Shellac lasting but was pleasantly surprised and don't want to change now!

BaconAndAvocado · 01/10/2014 21:02

So 3 weeks is about right?

I pay £20 for mine. Love the glossy effect, have a deep Rouge Noir type colour at the mo, gorgeous!

Botanicbaby · 01/10/2014 22:58

Mine looks amazing until it gets to the 2-week stage and then it starts to look past its best. I am really pleased with that though as it lasts much longer than a regular manicure. I pay about £25 for mine which I thought was pretty good.

burnishedsilver · 02/10/2014 12:34

Looks great for 2 weeks......have it removed.......spend 6 months waiting for my nails to recover.....forget how bad it was and have it done again.....looks great for two weeks.....have it removed.......spend 6 months waiting for my nails to recover......and so on.

Missus2ndwife · 02/10/2014 12:47

It doesn't last on my fingers but my toes are brilliant! Lasts 4 weeks (with re growth) and presently having a breather whilst I wait to give birth and my toe nails are fine, no damage.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 02/10/2014 13:26

By midweek 3 it really needs redoing, is peeling and the regrowth is bleurgh.

But omg you guys are geting it done cheaply. It costs 33 - 45 in the City [of London] and 5-10 to have it removed

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2014 13:29

Yes, where are you all going to get it so cheap? Removal and reapplication is about £30 in my bit of LondonEnvy

I find gel better than shellac - usually OK for about 3 weeks.

itsbetterthanabox · 02/10/2014 15:03

Bigtilly which gel?
Shellac is a brand of gel polish. Or do you mean hard gel extensions?

bigTillyMint · 02/10/2014 15:07

Oh! Durrr! OPI gel! I love OPI nail varnishes too!

itsbetterthanabox · 02/10/2014 15:13

Op is it genuine CND shellac you get or just a gel polish? There are some really good brands like gelish or geleration but there are also some bad ones. Find out what you're getting.
With gel polish on always wear gloves when washing up or having hands in water for a long time. Also use cuticle oil several times a day. These things will help prolong it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/10/2014 15:55

I've had it done twice, French (well American, which is more subtle tips) and it has been totally unchipped after two weeks but even with natural colour the regrowth is very noticeable by 2.5 weeks. The removal is such a palava that I can't see me doing it again except for holidays, I like doing my own and changing whenever I like instead of having to sit around for ages with tin foil and cotton wool. Paid £25 which is far too much to spend every couple of weeks IMO too.

BaconAndAvocado · 02/10/2014 18:00

itsbetter yes it's the CND shellac.

I also use Burt's Bees cuticle balm.

I'm absolutely pants at painting my nails, so,don't mind paying for a good job.
