How to wear/style skirts please

I've bought this skirt

www.fatface.com/skirts/austell-gypsy-floral-skirt/invt/74004?gclid=CjwKEAjw456hBRDQ4eqg8MzA2W0SJABI2gJ8LuxQzG4bGY0Z9uenTiRyLoFUQKuum4HqpyEWq-5LaxoCmUfw_wcB

as another go at not feeling frumpy wearing one like last winter. I do like the bottom half of skirt, tights and boots but really struggle with what to wear on top and also how to wear it. Top tucked in? Top out? Cardi? Long? Short? I haven't quite got there with feeling happy without covering up my top half with a scarf. It's the bit where the top meets the skirt I have an issue with. I'm 31, size 6 but do have a baby tum so I do get self conscious about it.

Not too sure where I'm going wrong as I've googled ideas and other people look perfectly ok with wearing a top with a skirt tucked in or not. I wasn't sure if it was a material issue or a length issue.

Please help.

I have lots of skirts like that. I just wear a long sleeve tshirt, whether or not it's tucked in depends on the length of the tshirt, and a cardi on top. What don't you like about where the top and skirt meet?

MilkThistle187 · 29/09/2014 16:15

As the skirt is patterned, I would keep the top half plain, so a black merino jumper, or pick out one of the colours in the pattern and wear a jumper in the colour. With opaques and boots it will be lovely

chunky boots, tights, fine knit jumper

Couple of ideas for you.

These modal/cotton tops from Matalan are really soft and warm, not to mention cheap:

I would try tucking it in and then pull it out a bit over the waistband of the skirt so it looks a little less 'done'.

Also, try a denim shirt tucked in. I was lucky to find a lovely New Look denim shirt in a charity shop and I've worn it loads. It goes with everything. H&M have tons, as do New Look and Gap. Just look for a nice soft one that's not too 'cowgirl'.

Thanks so much for your replies. I'm used to wearing jeans and dresses so it feels odd wearing something different. I guess I like to hide my tummy and I feel wearing a top and skirt acenuates the tummy area.

Will try finding a jumper and these matalan tops. Right bargain!

I wear with a fitted crew neck jumper or a shortish cardi and scoop neck tshirt, thick tights, boots and scarf.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/09/2014 18:22

I'd wear it with opaques, ankle or knee length brown boots and a biker jacket. With the biker, I'd be able to tuck a long sleeved t-shirt into the skirt or wear a shorter (not cropped!) one untucked.

Brillenbar · 29/09/2014 21:18

I like these fine knits from uniqlo www.uniqlo.com/uk/store/goods/128912 you can layer with a shirt untucked if you're worried about the bit where top meets skirt. If the jumper is neat fitting it doesn't add bulk. And I hink it's pretty cool looking. But then, I'm 43!

frankietwospots · 29/09/2014 21:49

Yes, those Uniqlo knits are very nice. The men's section is also worth a look, in size XS.
