Tightlining: Best dark brown product & brush recs?

Hello,
I want to get something dark brown rather than black to tightline - I was tempted by the Laura Mercier cake in mahogany (plus the brush), but Ive read some dodgy reviews... grateful for any recommendations please Thanks

Bobbi Brown gel liner has had really good reviews, worth a look?

I use the 212 brush from Mac. I have a flat liner brush from Laura Mercier (it's double-ended and part of a set, so maybe different from the usual brush) which is good, but the shape just isn't as good as the Mac brush IMO.

I use a Mac Mystery eyeshadow or a Maybelline gel liner (the one in the glass jar that comes with a brush).

I've got a double-ended Laura Mercier tightliner/eyeliner brush which came with the cake liner trio I picked up in a Space NK sale - they're the one thing in my make-up bag I couldn't be without. The Violet Asphalt shade is really gorgeous: a deep smoky purple which isn't as harsh as black and really brings out the green in my eyes. Once on, it doesn't budge. And the brush is great too, but probably any flat brush would do much the same job.

I might now have a look at a 212 brush... Smile

Ooo, thanks for all the replies!
Lndnmummy, I've tried the Bobbi Brown gel liner for 'normal' lining, but didn't find it as good as the Mac equivalent - it's not as pigmented.
Trucking, the clarins 3 dot looks interesting, but I think I'd like to try a brush application- Carpaccio and Wildfig, thanks for the recs! I might try the Laura Mericer cake with the MAC 212... Thanks Grin

Ohhh i want 212 brush now, can you tightline with a powder liner? Enlighten me please ladies.

Also thinking about trying another colour then black, am dark blonde with blue eyes, would navy work?

felttippens · 28/09/2014 19:29

What is tight lining?

MyMeMy · 28/09/2014 19:37

From my extensive (sad woman) research, it seems you need something that's at least water resistant so that it doesn't transfer to the bottom waterline.
I've managed to get quite good results just using a Mac kohl pencil, but I do get transfer and I'm curious to see how much better the result is with a purpose made product like the Laura Mercier tighline cake.
I think navy would be lovely with blue eyes, but mine are brown so probably not the best person to advise Wink. I'm always wary of black though, and of obvious colour with me being way over the wrong side of 40... Grin

When I use the powder and 212 brush, I don't line the upper waterline, but push the powder into the lash line. This is what it looks like: 1.bp.blogspot.com/-7qZ0yq6oWhw/T0T0P77BA3I/AAAAAAAACGE/9wN0xzbFDpc/s1600/tightline.jpg
It is very natural and subtle and lines the eyes in a really nice way. It just looks like the lashes are really full and lovely.

I'm not a massive fan of having colour in the upper waterline - I feel it's a bit too much and I find it uncomfortable during the day.

Bourjois has that 3 dot pen as well - probably cheaper than Clarins: www.bourjois.co.uk/catalog/make_up/eyes/eyepencils_eyeliners/intuitive_liner

MyMeMy · 28/09/2014 19:48

Carpaccio, that's exactly what I want to do. My eyes feel gritty with anything on the waterline.

Georgia Armani Eye Maestro is a good multipurpose liner/powder type thing that you can also use on brows.

I also use a charcoal powder from Body Shop. It stays put quite well but then I also only do the lash line.
