10 year old boy - slim fitting clothes please

My son is 10, of fairly average height (roughly 145 cm I believe) but is very slim. As such, to get clothes that are long enough in the leg or the arm, they then swamp him. We have one absolutely fantastic pair of slim fit trousers from Crew, which I have bought in a few sizes to last him, plus some slim fit Boden jeans, so trousers aren't too bad, though choice is limited.

On the top half though, it's a nightmare. One or two of his 8-9 items from last year still fit his top half but won't for much longer. The next size up from most makes, 10-11 just are enormous, past the point of being fashionably a bit baggy. We have Gap, John Lewis, Crew, Fat Face type clothes as a rule which he really likes the style of. He needed to look smart today for somewhere he was going with my husband and we tried on a few things which all look like they won't fit him until next year, let alone this one! Luckily, last year's smart jumper did the job but he can't wear that every day.

If your son is slim up top, where do you get tops/jumpers that fit the body but are long enough in the arm and broad enough in the shoulders?

This is actually answering your question Confused but Next and M&S have slim fit option on trousers and jeans which suit my skinny 9 yo DS.

We don't find tops swamp him so much but trousers just fall down!

is??? isn't answering....

Thanks Vod. What size are you buying for him? Are you at M&S and Next for the tops too?

Didn't know about slim fit option, good to know. Like I say, trousers less of a worry, he has three trusty pairs and we just size up year after year and it works for us. God forbid should Crew or Boden change their styles drastically! Tops and shirts and jumpers, however, are more troublesome for us. 10-11 is nuts enormous, I bought stuff in last year's sale in that size assuming it would be good for this winter, but one shirt actually did look like a dress!

My ds is slim but not quite as tall, so not sure if this will help.
The best fitting tops he has are H&M long sleeved T-Shirts, the really cheap stripy ones.

European, especially French, clothes are usually a good choice: La Redoute, Orchestra, but also Esprit and and Polarn O. Pyret.

Try Zara.

A tailor friend says go for spanish, french and japanese makes as they tend to be cut slimmer than er-hum american brands (more generous cuts, especially around the bum).

Zara is good for slim boys, they have extra skinny jeans available online that ds loves

MilkThistle187 · 27/09/2014 12:29

Cross post! Yes Gap sizing is huge, their skinny jeans look baggy on ds

We are lucky to have relatives in the states who send over the super skinny Levis for DS (fraction of the cost here) and they fit well for spider-legs. Zara do make cool trousers though - he had some lovely moleskin ones last winter.

H & M

AnonymousBird · 27/09/2014 12:42

Thanks - Zara and H&M we will definitely try. Not shops I have ever been in, as I think of them both as being for girls (no idea why I think that!) but think we have both in Cambridge. Gap is a funny one, some things come up tiny, some things huge.

I second European makes - long arms run in my family, and I can't buy British jumpers, shirts or coats, the sleeves are always too short.
DC are the same, as is my nephew - my SIL swears by Esprit, Benetton and Vertbaudet. Bit pricey though. She also gets him some girls' clothes (secretly), as they tend to be cut slimmer - harder now he is older though.

I like Lands End US site as they have slim and tall options for children on some clothes - you have to pay a bit for shipping though, and obviously it's a complete pain if you have to send it back.

The thing I actually do most with Dd is buy stuff that has the right length sleeves and then get it altered. Also an expensive option but it's nice to end up with stuff that fits properly.
