Does anyone have suggestions of nasty chemical-free make-up that actually stands up against the other stuff? I'm a Benefit/Mac/Bobbi Brown user at the moment but I really want to try and eradicate as many chemicals as possible because my skin doesn't like them much.

Okay. Everything is a chemical, even water is a chemical. But lets assume you're looking for products with limited numbers of ingredients, fewer potential toxins, and as little processing as possible. I don't think there's masses easily available on the market but I haven't looked in a while. A quick google on 'chemical free make up' turns up lots of potential links including this from The Telegraph last year

Bite Beauty make lip products that apparently are created with natural and food-grade ingredients - and they are supposed to be really good. I haven't tried them myself though.

Sephora in the US sell the products and they now ship to the UK: www.sephora.com/bite-beauty
I don't know if there are UK stockists yet.

This brand might also be interesting: www.100percentpure.com/
I know absolutely nothing about it, but they do ship to the UK and they list the ingredients of the products on their site. They are also using food-grade ingredients.

There are brands like Clinique, La Roche Posay, Avene and so on who advertise their products as being allergy tested/good for allergy sufferers. Clinique do have a good return policy if the products don't work for you, but that doesn't guarantee anything...

Thanks Time and Carpaccio - yes, limited to no synthetic ingredients is what I'm after (sorry, had an operation earlier and am a bit smashed from the painkillers). Especially foundation and mascara as I wear them most. My eyes are pathetic and end up watering when I wear mascara.
I will have a look through the links, but if anyone has first hand experience then I would love to hear their opinions

Dr Hauschka? I've got an eyeshadow quad from them and it's lovely.

There was a blog I came across by a poster here but I don't think it's updated now - I think it is called yumetc

Lily Lolo are fab, I've used their make up for a couple of years, have a look at their website

Jane Iredale was the only base my skin could tolerate last year when I had massive red patch flare ups.

Content Beauty is a fab starting point and they do a sample programme so you can try before you buy. Love Lula has a different brand selection, as does Naturismo. The latter are always having money-off weekends too which is nice.

Thank you all - like the sound of samples (helpful when living in the sticks!). I'm gradually phasing toxic crap out of our home and my make-up bag is the last stronghold to conquer! As each item runs out I am replacing with more natural versions - even the scented diffuser in the downstairs loo is now totally natural. DH wasn't convinced till I showed him the vast difference in prices - and how a 50p bottle of vinegar with essential oils in (so the house didn't smell like a chippy) cleaned just as well as branded bathroom cleaner!
