curly hair and job interviews

I have a bob and very curly hair (3c). I never straighten it and usually have it open rather than an up do. It looks fab and is me (iyswim).

Will be jobhunting again and a friend said I possibly shouldn't leave my hair open and rather put it up as it is not smart/sleek/glossy enough. I will be going for office based type roles. Never occured to me :-/

what is the general consensus about a curls and job interviews? Leave them wild or tame them?

I have curly hair in a bob and would never enter my head to do anything other than leave it loose for an interview. While it's important to make a good impression it's also important to be yourself.

Thanks, that is what I thought. My last job interview is many moons ago so I am not quiet up to date anymore...

I have similar hair and would definitely wear it down for an interview.

Your friend sounds a bit odd :)

BikeRunSki · 26/09/2014 16:56

I have the same hair and work in an office. It is just passed shoulder length and I tie in back. When it was shorter, I didn't and I don't bother about the little bits that are too short to do anything with.

When it was shorter I always wore it loose. I remember tidying it up for an interview by wetting it, putting serum through and then putting on a slightly too tight beany hat in the hope it dried flattish. Worked a treat. Lost the hat though!

I would say go however you feel most comfortable.

overmydeadbody · 26/09/2014 17:01

Well I have very curly hair down to the middle of my back and I don't wear it up at work, and would never have thought to put it up for an interview.

They can't possibly discriminate based on hair. People with sleek blow dried hair are not more capable than those with frizzy curly hair.

ZaraW · 26/09/2014 17:04

Why on earth would you put it up? Good luck with the interview!

RockMummy · 26/09/2014 17:36

Glad to hear we are all singing from the same hymn sheet. So tired of people especially hairdressers trying to force us into the same mold.

Another vote for down. Presumably if it's 3C it's got fab defined curls that look intentional, rather than the manky-fluffy-wavy-straight thing that mine can be!

choc0clock · 26/09/2014 17:51

Phew. Thanks. My hair is quiet distincr (people often approach me about it on the street) so hopefully interviewers will remember me Grin

Oh hell no. Don't straighten. Not only is it giving in to ridiculous bias but as you say it makes you memorable. Also, I once straightened for an interview and then spent ages damaging my hair straightening after getting the job, before 'coming out' Wink. To be fair I was young and foolish, no way I'd do it now.

macnab · 26/09/2014 23:49

What is 3C?!

And your hair sounds lovely so just go as "you"

reddaisy · 27/09/2014 00:02

Hmm, I have curly hair and some days it looks great and others it looks bushy and scruffy. I also bike to work which doesn't help, the main problem with my hair is that you never know what it is going to do on any given day so I kind of understand what your friend means. But I haven't used my GHDs for years as I realised that my face shape just didn't suit poker straight hair and I wear my hair curly every day as it is just me. When you look around at others people's hair, there is all sorts out there so I don't feel too bad.

reddaisy · 27/09/2014 00:03

Disclaimer - No one has ever approached me on the street about my hair

TsukuruTazaki · 27/09/2014 00:20

I never knew there were set categories of curl - googled 3c and found out all about it! I'm 2c apparently

And I also agree wear it down

Saurus72 · 27/09/2014 07:57

reddaisy I have exactly the same issue. Within the same week, using the same products I can have my perfect dream hair, and my worst nightmare hair.

For job interviews, I always use dry it straight then use heated rollers - it feels sleeker and more professional. However, if your curls are more reliable and defined, leaving it as it is seems sensible.
